On 30 May, Cheng Shin Rubber released its 2023 annual report. In terms of sales, the tyre manufacturer’s sales in 2023 were all lower than the previous year. Among all categories of tyres, the sales of motorcycle tyres increased by 0.34 per cent year-on-year, which was flat. However, the sales volume of PCR, TBR, bicycle tyres, inner tubes and other tyre products all declined to varying degrees. China's EV sector has never overplayed its consistent endeavors for the past 20+ years, and this is not a reason for its competitors to downplay, one way or another, its innovation, impact, and importance. Geely-owned Chinese luxury EV brand Zeekr says its new 5.5C ultra-fast charging LFP battery-pack charges from 10 to 80% in a record 10.5 minutes, adding a 500-km range to its 007 electric sedan. The 75 kWh LFP battery-pack (named ‘Golden Battery’), developed in-house by Zeekr, supports an 800-volt charging architecture which is necessary for extreme fast charging. The 2025 Zeekr 007 sedan will be the first model to carry the new pack. One a single charge, the EV would be able to cover a distance of 682 km. According to Zeekr, the high speed of charging an LFP chemistry battery-pack is achieved through optimised materials and improved technology. Indeed, the charging speed is even higher than what is possible with mosy NCM batteries. NCM has long been the go-to battery chemistry for premium EVs where high energy density and fast charging is prioritised over cost. NCM batteries are about 30% costlier than LFP batteries with similar capacity. Zeekr has over 500 ultra-fast charging (800V) stations across China and plans to double it by the year end. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's slim product range in the U.S. has sapped consumer interest in the Japanese brand, which ended last year with an anemic 0.6% share. Now the automaker vows it is ready for a revival with an ambitious product and retail offensive. Mitsubishi's 330 dealerships cover a third of the U.S. sales market. The automaker aims to bump that up to more than 50% by the decade's end. To drive brand and product awareness Mitsubishi will introduce new smaller-footprint retail formats that bring its vehicles closer to where consumers live, work and play. In Q4, Mitsubishi will take a page from Tesla, Porsche AG, Mercedes-Benz AG and open showroom-only stores in mixed-use developments & urban core. The 2,000- to 2,500-square-foot "upscale gallery" stores will display 2-to-3 vehicles and carry a handful in inventory. Startup and operating costs are pegged at < $1M. Next year, Mitsubishi will introduce a compact sales and service concept for suburban locations. Those "satellite" stores will display 3-to-4 vehicles, carry a 20- to 25-vehicle inventory and offer maintenance and light repairs on site. [BMW’s unveils new Korean R&D center] Expanded facility to expedite vehicle launch and boost customization for Korea, BMW's fifth-largest market BMW Group officially opened the doors to its expanded research and development center in Korea in Cheongna International City on Monday. This transformed facility, originally launched in 2015 within the BMW Driving Center premise on the nearby island of Yeongjongdo, has now moved and evolved into a comprehensive, standalone R&D center dedicated to advancing BMW's innovations outside of Europe, alongside its centers in the US, China, Japan, and Brazil. The BMW Group R&D Center Korea is designed to foster developmental and regulatory compliance testing, particularly for electric vehicles. The center features cutting-edge testing facilities, homologation labs, electric vehicle charger testing, and research labs.
