This is a much bigger deal than it may seem! Shout out to Víctor Garcia and #FinopsWeekly for pointing it out. I hope AWS follows suit with more flexible RIs and SPs. https://lnkd.in/gYq7JGW3 What's it mean, and why does it matter? Google allows you to extend 1 year commitments up to 35 months and 3 year commitments up to 59 months. You can't shorten them, but you can lengthen them. Why does this matter? When companies finally realize they shouldn't pay on-demand rates, they want to save money TODAY. However, if all your commitments are purchased on the same day, then they all expire on the same day too. That's really bad because it sets a floor on your rightsizing and cost containment efforts, or places a ceiling on how much you're willing to commit. You want to spread your commit expirations out across the year to allow for more flexibility in reducing and evolving your footprint. With most vendors, they only way to do that is to KEEP paying on-demand rates as you slowly build up your commit profile. The ability to extend those initial commits in order to spread them out is a huge help for companies just getting started in commit management. PS. If you are on AWS, you can use the RI marketplace to help reduce this problem, and Crucial Clarity can help you do it. It's not nearly as simple as what GCP is offering here, but it is still possible to build out a robust and healthy commitment portfolio.
