As the U.S. election approaches, key discussion points for U.S. energy are focused on energy independence, the balance between fossil fuels and renewable sources, and strategies to reduce emissions. With that said, I wanted to highlight how responsible North American energy operations actually are and how far we have come by using estimated global flaring emissions from Prism. • We use satellite imagery to estimate the amount of gas being flared at each flaring site and in-turn analyze flare intensities across the globe • US has grown production the most, nearing 20 MMbbl/d inclusive of all liquids. • US has decreased flared gas the most, nearly 50% of the estimated levels in 2019, with a recent uptick. • "Cleaner" countries include Canada and Saudi, who have a significant oil output with relatively low flaring. • Iran, Iraq and Mexico are in a league of their own in terms of flaring intensity. Russia has a high oil output while Iran, Iraq, and Mexico do not comparatively, making the latter three some of the "dirtiest" producers.

Geothermal energy is a game-changer for renewable energy, offering continuous power and complementing intermittent sources like solar and wind. Despite higher initial costs, its true value lies in reliability and sustainability, without the need for extensive storage. In a recent peer-reviewed article, Professor Robert Howarth of Cornell University concluded that "Overall, the greenhouse gas footprint for LNG as a fuel source is 33% greater than for coal when analyzed using GWP20, (160 g CO2-eqivalent/MJ vs 120 g CO2-eqivalent/MJ). Even considered on the time frame of 100 years after emission (GWP100), which severely understates the climatic damage of methane, the LNG footprint equals or exceeds that of coal". https://lnkd.in/dPBhbCZt Ireland currently takes roughly 20% of its natural gas supply from the Corrib gas field, and 80% from the UK Gas grid. In 2022 (the most recent year published) the UK gas supply was 27% from LNG, the majority of that from US LNG. No doubt the level of LNG in UK gas supply is even higher now. So Ireland already uses more imported LNG than domestic gas supply (27% 0f 80% is 21.6%) in its energy mix. Independent scientific research carried out by consultants Sustain:able shows that the average carbon intensity of imported LNG from the UK to Ireland was 78 kgCO2/boe. The same study showed that a new Corrib-like find would have an average carbon intensity of less than 4 kgCO2/boe, i.e. around 5% of that of imported LNG. Perhaps the most useful thing the Goverment could do with its €13 billion windfall would be to explore for new, low emissions domestic gas near Corrib? It would be a lot more sensible that continuing to rely on importing highly carbon intensive LNG from the UK, as we currently do.

The Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) just announced up to $7 million in funding to develop regional grid models assessing how clean, firm geothermal power can support an equitable energy transition and decarbonize our grid! 🌱 Geothermal energy could provide firm, flexible, renewable power to over 65 million homes across the U.S. This funding opportunity, known as the GTO Geothermal Resources’ Value in Implementing Decarbonization (GRID), focuses on: 🔹 Creating new valuation metrics for geothermal power’s economic and reliability benefits 🔹 Researching how to support an equitable transition through geothermal deployment 🔹 Developing visual tools to clearly communicate findings. GTO seeks to fund regional grid modeling studies within power pools, joint utilities groups, utility service territories, or Tribal jurisdictions in the contiguous U.S., Alaska, Hawai'i, or U.S. territories. "A seemingly plausible-sounding storyline for every event is easy to create. I say seemingly because the storyline approach is free to discount parts of the story that don’t advance the narrative, to change the story event by event, and to ignore events that didn’t happen or did not become extreme. A storyline is a story, not science." Unfortunately, the story is what the climate activists have been promoting, so when they say "follow the science", they really mean follow the narrative that they have carefully edited to promote their point of view. That is climate porn, not science.

As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) continues to surge, so too does the need for fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth highlighted this connection at a recent energy conference, emphasizing that AI's growth is tied to both Silicon Valley's innovation and the energy resources found in regions like the Permian Basin. 1. Increased Energy Needs: The proliferation of datacenters is creating substantial energy demands. These facilities require significant power to operate and maintain optimal temperatures, making them reliant on consistent energy sources like natural gas. 2. Investment Surge: The largest cloud infrastructure providers have ramped up their capital expenditures, which surged by 57% year-over-year to $55 billion in Q2 2024. This uptick reflects a growing investor confidence in datacenters, with total funding and mergers & acquisitions in this sector nearing $35 billion this year. 3. Private Equity’s Role: With AI infrastructure's energy demands, private equity firms are increasingly investing in fossil fuel assets. This trend suggests a strategic pivot, as renewable energy sources may struggle to provide the reliability needed for the AI datacenters. 4. Future Projections: Goldman Sachs forecasts that by 2030, AI datacenters will account for approximately 8% of U.S. power consumption. This growing demand is leading operators to negotiate directly with natural gas pipeline companies to ensure a stable energy supply. 5. Long-term Perspectives: While the immediate outlook points towards increased fossil fuel usage, there are arguments that AI could eventually contribute to energy efficiency and reduced emissions. Potential applications include improving grid reliability and optimizing energy distribution.
