How does a FHIR resource id differ from a resource identifier? The distinction between them is not always obvious to those new to FHIR. Look at this Patient resource for August T. Faulkner: https://lnkd.in/gai3m7N6 The resource has an id of “eacce214-93d1-41cd-5cd8-866c785dc5f1” — a random GUID generated by the FHIR server when the resource was created. - Every resource stored in FHIR must have an id - It does not change for the lifetime of the resource - It is unique to that resource type in that FHIR server - No meaning should be inferred from its value The last point is interesting, as many online examples of resources use meaningful id values such as “patient” or “blood-pressure-observation.” These are misleading and can cause confusion as they suggest the id itself has some meaning. It doesn’t. Here’s how to look up the above patient using the resource’s id: - /Patient/eacce214-93d1-41cd-5cd8-866c785dc5f1 - /Patient?_id=eacce214-93d1-41cd-5cd8-866c785dc5f1 More about the resource id: https://lnkd.in/gY-HnhJ9 Our patient August T. Faulkner also has a Medical Record Number — possibly provided by the hospital — of 78510398960. This is added to the same FHIR resource as an identifier. Identifiers in FHIR are business identifiers. Unlike the FHIR resource id they are not created by the FHIR server and have no connection to the server. Examples of other identifiers used for patients are: - Social security number - Health card number - Passport number A patient resource in FHIR may have any number of identifiers of various types, or none at all. Here’s how you look up the patient August T. Faulkner using his Medical Record Number: - /Patient?identifier=78510398960 - /Patient?identifier=http: //my .localhospital .ie/fhir/patient-MRN|78510398960 More about identifiers: https://lnkd.in/gm-F_rs2 And identifier types: https://lnkd.in/g4gEDQsA Here’s the Patient resource for August T. Faulkner on the HAPI test server: https://lnkd.in/gYt99mxR

When it comes to language models in healthcare, smaller is better. Small Language Models (SLMs) are making more of an impact than their larger counterparts. Our VP of Delivery, Diego Espada, discusses how SLMs outperform larger models like ChatGPT in his latest HIT Consultant Media article. Here's how SLMs are transforming the industry: ➡️ Reducing diagnosis times by quickly analyzing patient data. ➡️ Breaking language barriers with accurate translations. ➡️ Speeding up reimbursements by automating paperwork and correcting errors. ➡️ Streamlining admin tasks to let healthcare professionals focus on patients. ➡️ Keeping specialists updated by summarizing the latest medical research. SLMs tackle critical issues like accuracy, data privacy, and cybersecurity. They're nimble, powerful, and ready to make a direct impact. 👉 Read Diego's full article: https://lnkd.in/d5sHEC86

💡 Let’s Talk About Data Silos in Healthtech One of the biggest, yet least glamorous, problems in healthtech is data silos. These occur when patient information is scattered across different systems that don’t talk to each other—leading to inefficiencies, misinformed decisions, and even compromised patient care. 🌐 The Goal: Unified, Actionable Insights Imagine a world where a patient’s entire medical history, from genetics to recent bloodwork, is seamlessly available to every clinician. That's the dream. Achieving this breaks down barriers and leads to faster diagnoses, more precise treatments, and better patient outcomes. 🔍 The Reality Check: A Costly Lesson I remember a time when a small but ambitious clinic struggled to treat complex patients because lab results and patient histories were stored on disconnected systems. One heartbreaking case involved a delayed diagnosis because critical information wasn’t available at the right moment. The impact? Prolonged suffering for the patient and mounting frustration for the care team. 🚀 The Benefits of Overcoming Silos Unified data improves outcomes. It empowers doctors with a full picture of the patient, speeds up research discoveries, and streamlines healthcare operations. This isn't just about efficiency—it can be life-saving. 📈 How to Break Down Data Silos 1️⃣ Invest in Interoperable Platforms: Choose software solutions that easily integrate with others. 2️⃣ Standardize Data Across Systems: Develop a common language for patient information to ensure everything matches up. 3️⃣ Leverage APIs: Use APIs to connect systems and automate data sharing. 4️⃣ Educate Teams on Data Stewardship: Make sure your staff understands how to handle data efficiently and responsibly. 🏷 The Concept: “Data Cohesion” Data Cohesion is more than integration—it’s about uniting information to create actionable health intelligence. 🌟 Quote for Thought “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” — Peter Drucker Unified, cohesive data in healthtech is our chance to improve everything: from patient care to research innovations. The challenge is big, but the payoff? Even bigger. What steps are you taking to break down data silos in your organization? I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences in the comments. Let’s make health data work for us, not against us. #HealthTech #DataIntegration #PatientCare #Interoperability #CytoCync

FHIR API is revolutionizing how healthcare data is shared and managed, but navigating its complexities can be daunting. Here are some expert tips from SPsoft’s extensive experience with FHIR to help you leverage this powerful tool effectively: 🔹 Visualize Resources. Think of each FHIR resource like a spreadsheet, where data such as Patient Identifier, Name, or Gender are columns. This visualization helps simplify the complex data architecture of FHIR for those new to the concept. 🔹 Master HTTP Commands. FHIR API utilizes HTTP commands aligning with CRUD operations but includes more complex requests like Batch/Transaction, Operation, Vread, Patch, and Capabilities. Knowing that enhances your ability to manage data interactions efficiently. 🔹 Expand and Restrict API Usage. Utilize the Capability Statement Resource to tailor FHIR API functionalities to meet specific needs. That ensures your implementation is compliant and optimally configured for your use case. 🔹 Learn Through Examples. Refer to concrete examples to better understand and implement FHIR API in your systems. Practical examples can demystify specifications and facilitate smoother adoption. 🔗 Curious about integrating the FHIR API into your healthcare solutions? Connect with us to discover how to enhance data interoperability and improve patient outcomes with FHIR. #FHIR #healthcaredata #interoperability #healthcareinteroperability #digitalhealth
