Want to land a Solutions Consultant / Sales Engineer role? I get asked daily how to do it. I’ve been fortunate enough to have helped 100's of people from a range of backgrounds transition into SE/SC roles. Including teachers, real estate agents, nurses, loan officers, SDRs, AEs, and many more. Here’s a quick guide: 𝟭. 𝗨𝗽𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 You already have transferrable skills and experience. Determine where your biggest gaps are and start closing them. For most people, the most significant gap is technical skills. The good news is that there are a TON of free/cheap technical skills courses available. You don’t need to become an expert technologist to land a job. You just need to show hiring managers that you have enough technical skills and are committed to building your skillset. If you're brand new to the SE role. Read a book about being an SE to help you get familiar with the role, the daily activities, and the terminology. One solid option is: The Six Habits of Highly Effective Sales Engineers by Chris White 𝟮. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 + 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀/𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Now that you’ve bolstered your skillset and know the SE lingo... It’s time to reframe your experience on your resume and LinkedIn in terms of an SE/SC. Highlight specific examples where you’ve used technology to solve business problems. Include how you’ve supported customers and collaborated with others. 𝟯. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 (𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹) Learn a common software solution like Salesforce, Hubspot, etc (can be accessed for free and have a ton of free resources to learn). Create a demo presentation using a standard demo structure (Tell-Show-Tell) Practice it, then record a video to share with potential employers. (This is one example. There are other ways to showcase your skills.) 𝟰. 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸! Connecting with people who are where you want to go is essential in your career. You need to build relationships with SEs and SE leaders. You’ll learn from them and eventually get connected to job opportunities. There's a friendly community called PreSales Collective - a great place to get started. 𝟱. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 95% of SE interview processes will include a presentation step (but if you’ve done #3  above, you're nearly ready!) Get support from your new SE mentors to learn how to nail your interviews. ____ This is a simplified summary. There’s certainly much more to pivoting into an SE role than fits in a single post, but I hope this gives you some direction. It won’t happen overnight, and it takes serious work. But it’s absolutely worth it once you get there. It’s one of the best roles out there if you love technology, solving problems, and teamwork. The high earning potential is nice too 😉 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 🦸 - what else would you suggest to someone pursuing an SE/SC role?

Most GTM pros we meet have very little saved in their pension. (Especially when this is compared against their total earnings in recent years). Why? Default contribution= a small % of basic salary. Most Ent. AEs today have a £200k OTE (£100k base). Let's assume you pay in 5% of your basic + employer pays 5%. That's £10k / year. But you consistently hit your number and overachieve. Last few years - £200k, £250k, £220k etc. Every year, you've only paid in £10k (10% of your basic). Imagine this over 10, 15, 20 years. We often find very successful, senior ICs and leaders with only a £200k - £300k in their pensions. Never enough to retire on. Focus early. Less tax. Save more.

Clay raised $62M at a $500M valuation, following Apollo.io's monster raise last summer. Here's why a merger in the coming years would lead to market dominance: First, the business models of Gong, Outreach, Salesloft, Drift, et al. are broken. They dominated "The Golden Age of SaaS" but have not adapted to market shifts: -The per license model does not scale with more efficient and leaner GTM orgs -They lock you into expensive, annual contracts -Their value drivers (automated, high-volume outreach) no longer work for pipeline conversion I've been using Clay, and it is awesome. They've significantly increased our productivity associated with highly targeted and scalable outreach. Specifically: -Flexible, low-cost, month-to-month contracts with an allotment of credits -If you are realizing value, you can buy more credits. If not, you can cancel -They leverage a robust ecosystem of sales data and platform providers which significantly improves accuracy -Highly customizable to your specific business needs They stop short of being a sales execution platform. Since they already have a robust partnership with Apollo, there is a significant opportunity to invest in tightening that integration. With a merger, reps in the era of "profitable and efficient growth" will have the opportunity to work out of one platform. Currently a massive pain point from a workflow perspective. This was an incredible interview of Chad Peets with Harry Stebbings of 20VC If you are a sales leader or your hire sales people or involved in building GTM teams in anyway, then there is some great value in this one! Chad work with Chris Degnan the CRO Snowflake in the early days to build the sales team and as well as being an early investor there, and the stragies and tactics used to build at scale are great to hear. In particular, it was super interesting to hear how the recruitment process was streamlined for efficiency and the dislike for 'Hiring Panels' (as everybody should)! - The decision should be binary: you either want to hire them or you don’t. - Anyone not uniquely qualified to qualify or sell should not be a part of the interview process. - Having a sales engineer on the panel is risky & slows everything down.
