Y'all, I had a short conversation with a developer looking fr work who is deciding whether or not to put up a photo on LinkedIn and social media in general because he's worried people will judge him because he "looks" religious. Folks, this is 2024. We know ignorance is rampant in the world today, especially on college campuses and places where people are supposedly taught critical thinking skills. Hiring managers and HR/recruitment teams, from one hiring manager to another: If you're more concerned about what's on a candidate's head than what's under it, then they're not going to want to work for you anyhow. I am getting the data fetch to work in Vue.js, but now I have to figure out how to inject parameters into the data fetch. I can't use react hooks in Vue, so I have to figure out how to do it. Ok, so the next developer who says LLM is "game-changing" will get smacked in the face by me. Well, maybe not smacked in the face, but certainly get their skull crushed in by an oversized blunt weapon. People who never wanted to learn much about programming will continue to never want to learn much about programming. Those who wanted to learn about programming and were never quite 100% satisfied by Google, StackOverflow, and other online material, will continue to be never quite 100% satisfied by LLM. The game hasn't changed at all. The only people who can legitimately say LLM is a game-changer are venture capitalists.

my favorite thing about next.js is that webpack is already configured. I enjoy the developer experience. I like the api/routing system - it makes sense to me and I like not having to configure it. I like that they have a boilerplates system for server side rendering #NextJs #React #Framework #WebDevelopment

Code reviews are hard. Reviewing can be boring, and certainly isn’t as fun or exciting as writing new code. However, reviews are essential to good software development process. When done right reviewers are an integral part of the process because they can prevent bugs, help resolve tech debt, ensure a consistent code base, and can be a way to learn. Embrace them; take the time that is needed.

Commitment is scary, including learning a new tool. It takes time, and people start calling you a ___ developer (Rust Developer, VB Developer, you get the picture). I'm warming up to Supabase even though I'm late to the party, in time for Launch Week 12! One thing that put me off was the deep integration with Postgres. I mean Postgres is great, but wouldn't it be simpler to have everything in a single codebase in a single language? That's not how it is with Supabase — your code is split between SQL and TypeScript. It took me a while to be convinced that it's for good reasons: Postgres handles permissions and querying (including deep learning vectors) efficiently, better than you can really do in the layers above (Deno, React). I've reinvented permissions before, and I've wrestled with half-baked implementations — and I'm supa grateful I don't have to this time around.

Turns out, I unknowingly missed out on potentially dozens of newsletter subscribers 👀 Many of the sites I build are static, which means that they often don’t need a server to run. This is good, as it simplifies my dev environment and keeps costs down. I like this approach if it gets the job done. The tricky thing is knowing when to take the next step. Sometimes I’ll stick with a solution juuuust a little longer than I need to, if I can twist it a little to solve a problem. Subscribing visitors to my newsletter was once such task. The platform I use allows me to send subscribe requests from the browser, but it comes with a few problems: - I have to store my API key in the browser (it’s a public API key though) - Requests can be interfered with, and even blocked by tools like Ad Blockers. The latter I didn’t even know about until a kind user reached out to me saying that they weren’t able to subscribe to my newsletter on multiple occasions. (Big shout out to them, I appreciate you!) That’s on me for two reasons: - I knew that sending the request from the browser was not ideal. But it worked on my computer, and it worked for the several dozens of folks who have subscribed in the last couple months, so I assumed that all was fine. - I didn’t think to add error reporting tools like Sentry. I’m not sure if this problem occurred for just one person, or one hundred! Luckily, the solution didn’t involve spinning up and deploying a server. Instead, I whipped up a serverless function dedicated to subscribing users. It’s likely it won’t need to run more than a couple of times a day. This was easy to get working in Netlify: - Write a function in the right directory - Fire a request to the function from the browser - Netlify does the rest Like with everything, there are downsides, and I’m a little wary about vendor lock-in. My code now has Netlify-specific logic. Hopefully I won’t need to migrate off Netlify any time soon…

Hey fellow developers! I'm currently working on a Drupal project and I'm facing a dilemma. As someone who prefers coding over using the Admin Interface, I've built a robust application with minimal admin configuration. However, this approach has led to a conundrum: whether to share my code publicly. Some companies I'm interested in require access to my GitHub profile and project source code, as well as my Drupal profile. But I've kept my repository private so far. Should I make it public and share my source code with the world? I'd love to hear your thoughts! What are the pros and cons of open-sourcing my project?
