Electrifying music, film, fashion, art & events with free renewable energy 🔋⚡🔌🎸🎨🎥

About us

We think it’s wild that the world isn’t already running on the free, abundant energy provided by the sun. As creatives that had been looking for alternatives to fossil fuels ourselves, we decided to create an interdisciplinary ecosystem to facilitate the creative industry’s transition to 100% renewable energy. We prototype and create renewable energy solutions to: ☀️ Eliminate fossil fuels in (and with) music, film, art, fashion and event industries 🔋 Ignite curiosity about distributed renewable energy generation as an equitable path to combat climate change 👨👩👧👦 Inspire collective action to implement regenerative solutions A major role of the arts is serve as a vehicle for social change. Let’s design our fossil fuel-free future together now. Join our journey: hello@solarpunks.club

🌏 Sometimes climate doomerism can take a toll on our psyche. As an act of climate optimism, SOLARPUNKS joined forces with DER Task Force and Stereogum to throw Brooklyn’s First Solar-Powered Concert on Saturday at Newlab to show that decarbonization is happening faster than we think. 🌞 We wanted to show the viability of running a full concert production fully on the power of the sun (no diesel generators or fuel) while also tapping into the decentralized power of community microgrids. While there are larger productions running fully on battery now (woohoo!), they are typically powered by diesel given our current fossil fuel paradigm. 🔋 Learn more about this proof-of-concept for mobile battery energy storage systems (mBESS) and community-owned clean energy generation in the link below! 🔌 Special thanks to Sunbelt Rentals, Inc., Sustainable Westchester, Inc., HOPE Hydration, and POND Creative for their in-kind support! 🎸 Shouts to the artists, agents and managers who entrusted us to run their production fully on clean electrons with no diesel generator back-ups: Nation of Language, Grace Ives, Model/Actriz and Psymon Spine. 👫 James McGinniss Corey M Johnson Christina Chu Duncan S. Retiring fossil fuel machines ASAP is one of the most impactful ways we can create systemic change in support of the climate. We’re excited to share learnings from our recent endeavors in replacing fossil fuels with clean electrons through culture at the upcoming Environmental Media Association Impact Summit, including: + Providing free renewable energy from our creative community microgrids for independent filmmakers, art non-profits and environmental orgs like TreePeople, The American Film Institute, DESERT X and FULCRUM ARTS + Powering several upcycled waste design processes between Nike re:Creation and Are You Mad to promote circular economies + Keeping a remote 50-person camp powered by the sun with 100% uptime (including HVAC) for almost two weeks straight in one of the world’s harshest environments for events at Burning Man Project + Collecting month-long data reports down to the 5-second interval for large-scale off-grid productions Our Solarpunks co-founder Christina Chu will be participating in a panel about clean energy in entertainment on Wednesday at 1:30P, two hours before former U.S. Secretary of the State Hillary Rodham Clinton takes the stage. Also shouts to fellow Solarpunks co-founder Karin Campbell who will be representing Tony's Chocolonely and speaking on a panel with Rainn Wilson about the ways corporations can integrate climate justice into their models. If you’re attending, please feel free to reach out to collaborate on ways to move away from fossil fuels in film and beyond. If you can’t attend, all talks will be recorded and shared later!

Here is the largest deployment of renewable energy on a film set to our knowledge. Over the course of almost two weeks, we were able to fully replace the loud noise and strong stench of diesel generators with clean electrons from one of our creative community microgrids on a film shoot from The American Film Institute. Read more about the project here and feel free to reach out if you're interested in collaborating with us on ways to eliminate fossil fuels from (and with) our creative fields, whether it's film, music, art, fashion, events, and more. https://lnkd.in/gP6t5mvu -- Special thanks to: + Corrine Dye McGarey, Hannah Platzer, Max Olson, Tu Do, Kendall Thompson and Peter Glaros for collaborating with us to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy on this film set + Portable Electric for donating 2 electric generators for 2 weeks, and Jason Fitzgerald for donating 1 electric generator for 2 weeks + Sam Rubiner for identifying and fielding this opportunity + Matthew Gruber for his electrical expertise and donating distribution gear rentals for 2 weeks + Manny Padilla for his film production expertise and support on sourcing labor & heavy equipment rentals (cc: Christina Chu / Corey Johnson / Karin Campbell)
