From what I have experienced, the coding section is more about how you think rather than how fast you come up with solutions. Think with a calm head, employ the use of the 4 pillars of object oriented programing, and talk through the solution so the interviewer can really see how you think and problem solve.

Of course, when doing this, don't go into the extreme details to avoid losing the focus of the interviewer. Your thought process should be crystal clear. Besides talking through your thought process, try to give remarks about how efficient the code is (try to use the Big O notation and use Tilde notation if you feel extra fancy that day!). (Well, mostly) A programmer is a problem solver. They take concrete problems and solve them in an abstract way. Focusing on the language is like hiring a construction worker based on whether he walks well. Yeah, it is helpful to be able to walk well, but that isn't really the point.

Always speak in recursive sentences. Use pronouns that are highly descriptive and consist of entire words joined by underbars. Never make assumptions. Instead say “import MyKnowledgeOfYourCompany” loudly at the beginning of the interview. If the interviewer misspeaks, shout “syntax error!” Whenever you use the word “if” be sure to include an else clause. End every sentence with a semicolon instead of a period.

I think with ChatGPT and other similar AI tools, it is pointless to gauge a programmer by their memory of syntax or how quickly they can code in pressure. Instead their ability to understand and dissect a problem, design efficient algorithm on paper (not tied to any particular language which ChatGPT can do!) and conceptualizing a solution should truly matter. It is time for the industry to rethink some of its traditional methods of interviewing.

Expect to run short on time if given a programming assignment. To help you manage this, focus on first articulating your plan, showing your understanding of where things could go wrong. You don't have to solve those problems... but a comment to show you have identified a particular issue can go a long way.
