Environmental storytelling is mise en scène done well. It's setting the physical "stage", but it's also about context, emotion, and driving the narrative. That creaking sound (auditory cues)? Maybe we should check it out. The twitchy and nervous bystander (visual and social cues)? Let's go talk to them. That lever placed oh-so-conveniently next to our path (a proximal cue)? Well...if you haven't figured it out yet, you may want to choose a different game. But the truth is, with well-written and well-designed environmental storytelling, you WILL figure it out! Now, the user automatically knows that the red door likely represents danger (depending on how this color has been used previously in the experience). Some games in VR and non-VR use color in environments effectively to call out climbable ledges, for example.

The flexibility with VR brings mindful expression vs experience into a realtime scenario and with an immersive VR, collaboration becomes a just-in-time activity without dependability. Decision making becomes easier and faster with the dynamics of information and experience gets inclusive.

In my experience, a successful story will have: - A motive; - A journey; - Closure. This is the same in VR but, unlike books, you should use your viewers senses to make them feel like part of the environment.

Use it to guide with signifiers and feedback of the environment. Use it as a way to create paths for players through landmarks in the environment. Use them to help players navigate their journey in games and make choices. Use it to reduce overwhelmess and better navigation and use it to create emotion. In the end if done right will create more immersion, emotion and agency.

It's best leveraged by creating an immersive, interactive, and detailed environment. Start by ensuring that every element in your VR world - from objects, characters, and sound to architecture and landscape - contributes to your narrative. The user should be able to interact with these elements in ways that reveal bits of your story. For example, reading a letter found on a table, witnessing an event in a certain place, or even observing changes in lighting or weather conditions can take the story forward. Instead of direct exposition, allow users to discover the narrative naturally, making them active participants in your story. Let users' actions influence the events or outcome of the story for awesome VR experience

In the realm of 360VR creation, mastering environmental storytelling is about envisioning a narrative goal, designing purposeful elements, using cues for attention, and creating tension and surprise to immerse users. As a creator, you need to put the user at the center, and leverage through testing and adaptation to refine the immersive journey for an unforgettable storytelling experience.

Tools for environmental storytelling in VR include Unity3D and Unreal Engine for development. You can also build with SketchUp and Blender for 3D modelling, Tilt Brush and Quill for VR artistry, sound design software for audio, and VR headset SDKs for platform-specific development. If you want to create from scratch, grab a game engine. Unreal and Unity have proven to be good for the job! If you'd like to try a platform that already has content, VRChat and RecRoom work but I'd also like to point out at NeosVR. Although I'm an avid VRChat user, I can't deny the potential of all those platforms for creation. Some places on those tell beautiful tales that are a must try.

We use Unity and Unreal engines for running Metapilot. We find that Unity allows for more experimental work in the field of AI, and allowed us to create projects faster for governments and aerospace companies.

Same for best practices in VR. - Don't shake your player. - Don't forcefully move the player without blacking out the screen. - Don't splatter UIs on their face that are cumbersome/hard to understand - Take care to draw attention to what you want the player to look at (since they can be looking anywhere). Once you've created something, ask friends and others for real feedback and improve. Comfort can be a deal breaker, even for seasoned VR users.

You should definitely draw inspiration from scenography, retail design and architecture. However, the best source for inspiration will be video games, particularly a genre called "Walking Simulator". Make sure to keep the user immersed in the experience. Although it might be required to interact with certain UI elements or read some text on the screen, keep every single interaction that doesn't represent real-life to a minimum. If a player truly feels present in the VR experience, having to read a bunch of text will drawn him/her out of the experience. Also, instead of using controllers, try using other forms of interaction, such as gaze, voice or hand-tracking. If environmental storytelling done right, you can really transport that player to a new reality.

While the article predominantly discusses environmental storytelling in recreational VR experiences like games, its relevance extends significantly to educational VR applications. Remember to always have a backup plan if a user gets distracted or lost. Environmental storytelling is difficult, if not impossible, to cater to every single disposition of user. What will draw in 90% of people will leave that 10% smelling the wrong flower and traveling to the wrong place. Fortunately, in VR you have all of that wonderful gaze and positional data that can help you figure out who's doing the wrong thing. Build in timers, user maps and guides, and prompts to gently guide the user back into the story or experience. Want to avoid being heavy-handed? Have a novel distraction like an NPC guide that enters in to shoo them a different direction, or a hummingbird with a subtle glow that beckons them back onto the road.
