How do you combine AI with user experience design?

Understanding the problem is the foundation of any successful design. To embark on the journey of AI innovation, we must first embark on the path of empathetic inquiry. Dive deep into the user's world, where their challenges and aspirations reside. Understand their needs, desires, and the context in which they operate. By defining user personas, pain points, and goals, we illuminate the roadmap to meaningful solutions. It's akin to fitting together the pieces of a complex puzzle; each insight adds clarity to the bigger picture.

Integrating AI into user experience design offers numerous benefits. By utilizing AI, designers can gain insights into user behavior through analysis and conduct A/B testing to refine and enhance usability. AI can also assist in content creation, making the process faster and more consistent. It also improves accessibility by providing solutions such as image descriptions, audio transcription and layout adjustments for more inclusive experience. Last but not the least, successful integration of AI into UX design necessitates close collaboration between AI experts and UX designers, with a strong emphasis on ethical considerations and data privacy to ensure responsible and user-friendly AI-driven experiences.

All said and done, AI in both Generative and deterministic formats is not a magic wand. At its core, they should address pain points and create efficiencies and new ROI methods. If the payoff for solving the problem is not more than the unit price of LLM (+ proprietary data overlay), then its not worth the pursuit.

Assuming this question relates to AI (Artificial Intelligence) as per title and text, not IA (Information Architecture) as per categorization. In my experience it is important to collaborate with data professionals (e.g. researchers, data engineers, and data scientists) who have the technical skills required to access data warehouses (think IH, data marts, structured/unstructured data, etc.). Not only do they ensure data integrity, and data quality, but more so these individuals are well equipped uncovering insights and patterns, and find correlations worth investigating further. By augmenting their quantitative insights (what) with qualitative user research (the why) designers can ask better questions, define better desirable outcomes.

In a past project, our team aimed to enhance customer support. Excited by AI's potential, we hastily integrated a chatbot using deep learning. We imagined a bot that could learn rapidly. However, most inquiries were straightforward, and our solution was akin to using a rocket to travel next door. Users felt it was overkill, and the bot often misunderstood simple requests. Later, we transitioned to rule-based AI, aligning better with user needs and expectations. Lesson learned? Always align the AI technique with the problem's actual complexity and user needs.

Each AI technique possesses its own set of virtues and constraints, similar to instruments in an orchestra. Just as we wouldn't use a violin to play a trumpet's role, we must align our choice with our design objectives, user expectations, and the resources at our disposal. Moreover, we should be intimately acquainted with our chosen technique—understand its capabilities, its boundaries, and its idiosyncrasies. This knowledge is the bedrock upon which we construct our user experience. We must appreciate how our chosen technique will affect the user's journey, recognizing the potential for both enchantment and frustration. Ultimately, the artistry of AI lies in this discerning selection process.

Choosing the right AI techniques should always be done in the context of compliance needs - be it geographic or industry wide. If audibility is a hard requirement, refrain from any AI techniques and models that are like a black box. Self-learning models fall into this category. Audibility requires insights into how decisions were made to achieve the outcome and thats nearly impossible to do with these types of techniques. Likewise restrictions imposed onto geographic areas may prevent the use of certain types of data, making some techniques not as useful. Find ways to combine techniques, and keep the solution fluid to adapt if changes by external entities impose other regulations and limitations.

The public was introduced to generative AI through chatbots like ChatGPT. These are a sub-optimal user experience where the user is left to negotiate with an LLM to get the results they are looking for. When incorporating AI, always try to remove the direct interaction with the underlying system. This is typically done by designing a system between the user and the AI that makes the experience flow better. Less user talks to AI, more using AI to translate user input into meaningful outputs. Example: Use AI to translate a user command into settings being changed in the app.

Our team integrated an AI recommendation engine for an online bookstore in a previous venture. Excitedly, we focused solely on accurate book suggestions. Post-launch, users were confused: Why these suggestions? No feedback mechanisms existed. We added a simple 'Why this recommendation?' feature upon revisiting, allowing users to understand AI's choices. Also, we incorporated a thumbs-up/down response for users to voice preferences. The change was transformative; users felt engaged and understood. The takeaway? AI interaction is not just about functionality but also about meaningful communication.

Starting with the user interface, we're crafting the stage upon which this dance unfolds. It must be inviting, easy to navigate, and visually coherent, ensuring users feel both confident and comfortable in their interactions. Users must feel that their inputs are seamlessly integrated into the routine, and the AI's outputs must be not just accurate but meaningful. It's not just about executing moves; it's about telling a story. Above all, consistency is key. Users must be able to predict the AI's responses and feel in control. This consistency breeds trust, a foundation for engagement.

Understand how your AI interface integrates with the product. Does it cover the product globally? Is it related only to specific areas? Is it useful to be able to interact with your UI and AI at the same time? You can leverage well known existing patterns, or pick different solutions depending on some peculiarities. Understand how the AI really elevates the overall UX.

One way to ensure consistency it is to go for a design system approach. Think about the Atomic Design Methodology but replace the visual components (atom, molecules, organism etc) with AI related features (say prompts for example). Now you have a way to control and fine tune how the LLM interact with the users without falling into the conversation trap.

Real-world testing is the crucible where our AI system's mettle is truly tested. Here, it encounters the unpredictabilities and nuances of user behavior and genuine scenarios. It's a place where theory meets reality, and valuable insights emerge. Example: We did a project where User testing was most crucial, it was a new idea and we weren't able to get much data, so we tried different AI machines which has fewer data items but it helped us as we validated the same later on with our real-time users, though there were some raw data but it was good for initial testing.

For enterprise implementations multiple roles are typically involved in testing and iterating systems. A staging process that separates a sandbox environment helps accomplish this, because in its initial phase changes should not moved into production and tested with real users before rigorous testing in a safe environment. Synthetic data may be a component in simulation test to manage risk. Once the results look promising its save to roll out the changes to a small subset of user groups (ABC testing), and have a control group to measure against. It's worth it incorporating qualitative research methods for these groups, and with those additional insights and hopefully validations it save to roll out the design to the rest of the user base.

The ethical issues surrounding AI are many, and often not immediately obvious. AI systems tend to amplify data bias, are known to output incorrect information (aka hallucinations), and the validity of their output is dependent on the validity and impartiality of your data input. On top of this, people tend to see computers as neutral arbiters of the truth (they are not), and tend to trust computer systems without cause to do so. For these reasons it's important to keep the human in the loop and preserve human user agency and autonomy when integrating any AI feature.

As AI becomes more ubiquitous in our products and lives, I predict that one of the biggest movements in design and in society will be a premium on true human interaction. One of the big ethics considerations when designing for AI is to create a system which is transparent about when somebody will be using AI, when AI has been used, and how it is being used.

We worked on some AI projects in this this year and we tried incorporating AI as much as we can, for example, we recently worked on a customer support portal for an e-commerce website where we integrated a chatbot powered by NLP. We took some AI benefits in the process like: - Instant Assistance: 24x7 assistance - Personalized responses based on the user's browsing history - The chatbot continuously learns from user interactions - Seamless Handover - Data-Driven Insights: The AI system collects data on user interactions, which can be analyzed to identify trends, pain points, and areas for improvement in the user experience. This data-driven approach helps in making informed design decisions.

We worked on a call center application last year making use of AI capabilities, such as NLP combined with voice recognition to help improve the user epxerience of customer service representatives and the customer experience at the same time. The AI capabilities act like an assistant for the customer service representative empowering them to focus on the quality of the interaction they have with their customers, while simultaneously humanizing the experience they have with the system. Additional benefits that we took away: - Improved customer experience - Faster and more efficient handling times - Reduced error rates for data entry - NLP models are continuously enhanced through feedback loops and data-driven insights

Combining AI with user experience design involves leveraging AI's capabilities to enhance personalization, efficiency, and user-centricity. Achieve this by using AI for data-driven insights, personalization, predictive UX, chatbots, and NLP. Ethical AI use, continuous learning, usability testing, cross-functional collaboration, and user education are integral components. This synergy creates more engaging and efficient user experiences while maintaining user trust and privacy.
