Charles Proffitt of Florida was sentenced to death after stabbing a man to death in the course of robbing his home.

The case was appealed to the US Supreme Court and became a companion case to Gregg v. Georgia, Jurek v. Texas, Woodson v. North Carolina, and Roberts v. Louisiana, 428 U.S. 153 (1976).  The cases are generally referred to as Gregg, or as James S. Liebman called them, the July 2 Cases.

The cases reaffirmed the application of the death penalty in the United States of America.   All previous death penalty laws had been overturned in Furman v Georgia 408 U.S. 238 (1972), which some people had thought or hoped would end the death penalty in the USA.
