Govee RGBICWW Floor Lamp Review

Govee can just about cover every part of your home with its smart light products. Today, we will take a look at one of them whose application is potentially broader than the products we have previously reviewed. The Govee Cylinder Floor Lamp is exceedingly simple to use and robust with features. It doesn’t need to be attached to a table, stuck to a wall, or on a TV. You simply plop it anywhere you like and watch the magic happen.

Design

The Govee Cylinder Floor Lamp aims to be a modern replacement for old-fashioned floor lamps, and I can immediately say that in this sense, it is one of the better-conceived products. Firstly, the lamp comes in 6 pieces – a round base that stands on the floor, three lamp poles, a control box, and the lamp head on top. What’s great is that the parts are incredibly easy to assemble because they just screw into each other, and you only need to thread the power cable from the controller through the pillars and base.

Govee Cylinder Floor Lamp - Assembly

The assembly is incredibly simple

The only possible issue is the fact that the power cable is hardwired into one of the lamp poles, which could be a problem in case of malfunction. There’s also the fact that you need to use all three poles in order for the lamp to work, and can’t reduce its total height by excluding one of the poles. Most won’t find this an issue since the full assembled lamp reaches a nice height of 175 cm (68.8 inches) and is honestly meant to be displayed due to how great it looks in action. Even better, the blend between components is seamless, almost making the thing look like it’s made out of a single piece of material.

Govee Cylinder Floor Lamp - Base

The base ensures this thing isn’t going anywhere

The build quality is good as well. The entire lamp weighs around 4.5 kg (9.5 pounds) and most of it comes from the really heavy and wide base as well as the metal lamp poles. This ensures the entire thing is safe and sound on the ground and won’t ever fall over, even if you brush against it passing by, for example. The rest of the components housing most of the electronics are made out of plastic, and they represent the centerpiece of the lamp. Predictably, the lamp is meant to be used indoors as it lacks any sort of water protection, which isn’t a problem in itself but more of a missed opportunity that would further expand the lamp’s already numerous use cases.

The controller itself features a single multifunctional button that can either be used to turn the lamp on or off, or increase the brightness in set intervals. There’s also an LED indicator light just above that, which will display the current brightness level. Above the controller is the lamp head, which is essentially one giant light diffuser with the RGB LED’s placed inside. It’s basically the place where the magic happens.

Performance

Now, as with most Govee light products, it’s all about the lights and the lights here are top-notch. Firstly, the cylinder floor lamp is perfectly capable of serving as a main source of light – even for larger rooms, as it goes up to 1500 lumens. It also supports color temperature in the 2200-6500k range as well as, most importantly, that sweet RGBIC.

The “IC” addition essentially means that the cylinder lamp is capable of making multiple colors show on certain parts of the light simultaneously. In practice, besides some beautiful and saturated colors, the cylinder lamp can blend these colors in amazing ways – basically creating smooth colorful animations. These almost can’t fully be appreciated through images, and seeing the lights in person can, for the lack of a better term – be flooring.

Not only can you make it look like your regular old lava lamp, but you can set all sorts of pre-made light animation to play out or even create your own. There’s one light preset that emulates a Pac-Man eating dots, one that looks like a panda climbing a bamboo and even one looking like someone playing a game of Candy Crush among many others. Of course, there’s a ton of simpler effects that are just there to set a certain mood or to simply illuminate the space in one way or another.

How pleasing to the eye the lights are and how well the colors blend is also due to the excellent diffuser, which is more or less par for the course for Govee. It’s so good, in fact, that it makes the light bearable to look at even at a 100% brightness, so it won’t blind you in case you set it down next to a TV or something. That is also one way you can make use of the built-in microphone that can make the lights synchronize with music or movies, which can create some cool moments for a movie night or a house party.

Govee Cylinder Floor Lamp - Govee App

The Govee app is as robust as always

Since the controller has only one button, most of this is controller wirelessly through the Govee app. You simply connect to it through Wi-Fi, and you’re all set to go. As we mentioned in some of our previous Govee reviews, the app is really well-made, robust and easy to use. Besides the standard options like turning the lamp on or off, increasing or decreasing the brightness, you can set it to glow in different colors, set different effects, create your own presets, sync it to other Govee lights and even set automatic timers. The lamp also supports Google Assistant and Alexa for simple voice commands which is always a neat thing to have.

Conclusion

Once again, Govee hits it out of the park with the RGBIC Cylinder floor lamp. The only thing that might be an issue for some is the relatively high $169 price point. Nevertheless, if you do decide to go for it, know that you’ll be getting one premium piece of smart lighting that looks beautiful, is highly customizable and truly versatile – enabling you to bring some color to wherever you decide to place it.
