Night Dive Studios, masters of retro-FPS remasters, just seems to be on a roll this year. It feels like just yesterday that they blessed us with glorious, extremely in-depth remasters of Rise of the Triad and Quake II. But here they are with another one, a remaster of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion. Turok 3 was originally released in 2000 exclusively for the Nintendo 64, but with a remaster due out November 14th for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
Turok 3 is the third and final installment in the original trilogy, and as Turok 1 and 2 have received excellent remasters from Night Dive already, so Turok 3 being amazing is a pretty safe bet. The port will run in Night Dive’s proprietary KEX engine, running in 4K 120FPS on Steam, Xbox Series X and PS5, and the game will be visually enhanced with redone textures, new character and weapon models, and improved environmental art. If some particularly keen-eyed Reddit users like Janus_Prospero are to be believed, this port may also re-implement cut content and features from the original release, though Night Dive has not confirmed this.
It should definitely be superior to the original, if only for the fact that you no longer need to play with the N64’s weird claw controller. The game will be much better played on a sensible controller. As an added bonus, if you’re playing on Switch, you get access to gyro-aiming as well.
Turok 3 concludes the epic story, starring sibling heroes Joseph and Danielle fireseed, battling an army of robots, dinosaurs, and aliens under the command of the extradimensional nemesis known as Oblivion. Both heroes boast their own unique arsenal of weapons and abilities, allowing for two separate routes through the game.
