Everyone knows that the first Avatar movie was a huge Box Office hit back in 2009. Before Star Wars was bought by Disney and before Marvel’s Avengers, Avatar was the biggest movie franchise in the late ’00s.
Thanks to the movie being directed by James Cameron and its revolutionary 3D technology, Avatar grossed well over $2.7 billion at the worldwide Box Office. This record stood for over 10 years until Avengers: Endgame eclipsed it back in 2019.
However, Avatar reclaimed its Box Office crown thanks to re-releases and the movie has now earned $2.9 billion. Many people thought Avatar’s popularity was a fluke and they did not think its sequel would do the same.
Fast forward to early 2023 and the Box Office performance of Avatar: The Way of Water has exceeded all of our expectations. While the movie may not outgross the $2.9 billion that Avatar has earned, its current trajectory is tracking to get over $2 billion worldwide.
If we visit Box Office Mojo, the current reported gross for Avatar: The Way of Water is $1.755 billion worldwide. Most of the gross is outside of North America as the domestic earnings for the film is only at $525.7 million.
Avatar: The Way of Water has earned more money than nearly every Star Wars or MCU movie released to date. The only Star Wars and Marvel films that have grossed higher than it is The Force Awakens, two Avengers movies, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Thanks to the success of Avatar: The Way of Water, the movie has exceeded its break-even point of $1.5 billion. Due to this, James Cameron has confirmed that he will finally be working on Avatar 3, 4, and 5 in the next few years.
It will be interesting to see what the final Box Office gross will be for Avatar: The Way of Water. It might even outgross the lifetime earnings of Titanic.
