Project L, LoL’s Fighting Game, Gets a New Name and People Aren’t Loving It

Riot Games' upcoming fighting game set in the League of Legends universe has been renamed from Project L and fans aren't too happy with the change. Alongside a new name, the game also received a suite of new social media channels as well as two new videos giving players a better look at the title and what to expect from Project L in 2024.

The long-awaited Project L, the fighting game by Riot Games set in the League of Legends universe, has been given a new name and a new gameplay teaser. However, it hasn’t gone over that well with fans.

The title’s new name is 2XKO (pronounced the same way it’s spelt), a play on the game’s focus on 2v2 tag-team combat. In conjunction with the new title, official social media pages for 2XKO have popped up all over the place, including a new YouTube channel, Facebook Page, TikTok, Instagram and Twitter (now X). In addition, all official Project L content on Riot’s official channels has been renamed to 2XKO

Alongside the new name, we also received two videos on the official 2XKO YouTube Channel, with one being a short gameplay trailer and the other being a look at what to expect in 2024 from Executive Producer Tom Cannon. In the new trailer, we got a better look at the game’s unique art style and mechanics as five iconic League of Legends Champions – Yasuo, Ahri, Echo, Darius and Illaoi – battled it in a new previously-unseen stage themed after a pirate bar.

As for Tom Cannon’s video, he discussed the decision to change the name from Project L and provided information on what to expect in 2024. This includes several hands-on demos all across the world at places like EVO Japan, additional dev diaries and information to 2XKO’s social media feeds, and even the potential for an at-home playtest sometime in late 2024 (which you can sign up for here).

However, the name change has been met with a wave of criticism. On 2XKO’s new YouTube channel and latest gameplay trailer, the majority of comments are of fans decrying the new name or saying how much they preferred the title of Project L. This is alongside a number of FGC content creators making videos on the name change where the opinion remains largely the same, with many lamenting the memorability of the game’s new title.

“It’s crazy how Project L is a better name.”

“Can we all just agree to still name it Project L?”

“Project L team, I have been insanely excited for this game to come out and want nothing but success from it. Ya’ll gotta change the name. It’s not too late. 2XKO is terrible and it’s going to be a marketing nightmare.”

Project L was originally unveiled over 3 years ago alongside a suite of other League of Legends spin-offs that Riot was working on. Prior to today’s news, the last thing we heard from Project L was in July of 2023 when Riot released a drove of new updates, including several Dev Diaries and a Champion reveal for Yasuo.

2XKO is expected to launch on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PS5 sometime in 2025.
