Pokémon Sleep: The Pokémon Go Sequel

After two long-awaited years, Pokémon fans were finally able to play a new version of Pokémon called Sleep. You still catch Pokémon, but not from the usual method of throwing pokéballs. Instead, it’s by getting a good night's rest.

Pokémon Sleep: The Pokémon Go SequelGamers rejoice as they can finally sleep while still playing a game. Now, they really can game as much as they’d like without forfeiting any of their sleep. While Pokémon Go wants us to get out and walk, Sleep wants us to finally get a good night’s rest.

The player meets with Professor Neroli, but they don’t give you a Pokémon to battle with. Instead, he explains that you’re going to observe the incredibly tired Snorlax. With each sleep session, your Snorlax grows stronger, attracting more types of Pokémon based on your sleep type. When you wake up, you can review how well you slept and record various Pokémon your sleep type attracted that session. You can “catch” them by feeding them Poke Biscuits making them friendlier and want to join you as “helper Pokémon”.

You can make your Snorlax stronger through the day while you’re awake by feeding them berries and meals, made from ingredients that your helper Pokémon collects for you throughout the day. Certain milestones are represented as a bar on the top of your screen that allows rarer Pokémon to visit after you sleep. The more Pokémon you see, the more you rank up. This means the Professor gives you rewards for each milestone you hit, so you become stronger overall!

While you get rewarded for sleeping longer, you’re only able to track eight and a half hours total. The game does make sure to let you know that you can sleep as much as you want. You just can’t track it more than twice a day even if you don’t get all 8.5 hours.

Using the App

Essentially, the app tracks your sleep and measures how well you slept with three different stages: Dozing, Snoozing, and Slumbering. Unsurprisingly, if you get more of a certain sleep type, that’s what that session is going to be assigned, unless an equal amount makes it a “Balanced Type”. Overall, it’s a way for users to track their sleep patterns by using their phone’s accelerometer to track their tossing and turning and microphone to monitor their snoring and restlessness overnight. (Please read the app’s privacy policy on their microphone usage. At this time, they’re not shared with anyone. They’re only stored on your device for 24 hours after that sleep-tracking session.)

You’ll want to keep your phone by you in bed for the app to work properly, or if you have the Go Plus + accessory you can use that instead of your phone. With Pokémon Sleep hitting over one million downloads on Android alone, it’s easy to see how well-loved this franchise is. So go get some well-deserved rest and fill up your Sleep Style Dex.

The Holiday Update

On December 18, Pokémon Sleep released its Holiday Double Dream Shard Research Event. It’s running until December 25 at 3:59 AM your local time. You’ll have a higher time of meeting Delibrid, Snover, and Abomasnow during the event. The festive Pikachu will be wearing a red festive hat and will count towards your goal of registering new sleep types for each Pokémon. This event is a limited-time function. It will feature double dream shards, double EXP from candies, and limited-time event missions you can complete for special rewards. All you have to do to participate is to be on Greengrass Isle during the event period.
