The DualSense controller for the PS5 has been revealed, and it's definitely different. The controller features a black and white colour scheme, with a less intrusive lightbar. PlayStation claims the DualSense will be "transformative" for next-generation games.

The PS5 DualSense controller has been revealed.

PlayStation decided to randomly reveal the design of their new controller for the PS5, called the DualSense. Not only does the DualSense integrate brand new functionalities like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, but it also has a unique colour scheme. The controller has a striking two-toned colour scheme, mixing the traditional black, with a minimalistic white. The light bar has been reworked, sitting on either side of the touchpad. Replacing the light bar, according to PlayStation, gives the controller “a slightly larger look and feel”. It certainly appears to be thicker than its predecessor, though there is only so much we can glean from images. A rechargeable battery remains (hopefully better than the PS4) but the charging port is now USB-C.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5,” said Ryan. “The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.” – PlayStation Official statement

What’s New With the DualSense?

When I first saw the DualSense, I thought they had removed the share button. The button allowed you to quickly capture special moments in the games you were playing and share on social media. Thankfully, the left-hand button is now the create button. Sony claims that this will help players “create epic gameplay content to share with the world”. If wearing a headset to communicate with people isn’t your thing, DualSense has you covered. You can now use the in-built mic to chat with friends without closing your ears to the outside world. Sony does recommend that you do this for shorter conversations, however.

So, a new controller for a new age in console hardware. The question now is when we will see a full console reveal? Sony has claimed there are no plans to delay the PS5 and will share more info within the coming months. I expect an early too mid-June announcement. The DualSense may give us a small glimpse of what colours the console itself might take. What do you think of the new DualSense? I’m not over the moon with it, but I can’t wait to get it in my hands.
