The first Onmyoji short story was published in 1986, while the first novel was published in 1988. Since then, the series has only grown in popularity. Spanning across fifteen short stories, three full length novels, two live-action films, smartphone games, a thirteen volume manga adaptation, and several live-action TV dramas.

The Onmyoji games in particular have garnered their own popularity, as the mobile turn-based RPG and strategy MOBA tend to be more well-known than the rest of the adaptations. In the Onmyoji games, Onmyoji are a class of people with supernatural abilities who use their powers to maintain the balance between Yin and Yang.

There is no official release date for the Netflix anime adaptation, but it is confirmed to release in 2023.
