After a monumental wait, Nintendo has announced a Definitive Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X, the second game ever made in the beloved Xenoblade Chronicles series, which will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2025.
Xenoblade Chronicles X follows the survivors aboard the USS White Whale in the year 2054. After Earth is razed by alien invaders, only the USS White Whale and its inhabitants escape, crash-landing on a hostile planet called Mira. The last bastion of humanity is the technologically advanced city of New Los Angeles but time is running out as resources dwindle and fearsome monsters knock at the gates. As a newly awoken member of BLADE – the protector organisation responsible for safeguarding the last few remnants of humanity – it is up to you to tame the wilds of Mira and bring humanity back from the edge of extinction.
Similar to the Definitive Edition of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will feature a swathe of visual enhancements, most notably a new overall art style for character models which puts them more in line with the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition style. Additionally, Nintendo promises that this updated version of X will feature “new story elements” from the original: while unlikely to be a large piece of standalone content like the Future Connected or Torna expansions, there will be some new story content to explore, as hinted at by the end of the reveal trailer.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is the last mainline Xenoblade Chronicles game to make it to the Nintendo Switch. The original Xenoblade Chronicles X was released on the Wii U back in 2015 and it is a large departure from the main trilogy, featuring many aspects which set it apart from Monolith Soft’s other entries. X features a player-created main character, a different timeline from the main trilogy, vehicle combat and traversal with the SKELLS, and, most jarringly, a massive shift to American-based voice actors compared to the wide variety of British and European voice work the series is now known for.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition launches next year on the Nintendo Switch on March 20th 2025. You can preorder Xenoblade Chronicles X on the official Nintendo Store or the Nintendo Switch eShop.
