Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s Popular Collectible Card Mini-Game May Get Expansion, Developers Say

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, says that positive feedback has caused the development team to consider expanding upon Queen’s Blood, a turn-based collectible card battler that pits two players against each other on a tiled 3x5 grid.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's Popular Collectible Card Mini-Game May Get Expansion, Developers SayFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi says that positive feedback has caused the development team to consider expanding upon Queen’s Blood, the title’s popular collectible card mini-game.

In a new interview with Red Bull, Hamaguchi says that the mini-game’s 145 card total could expand in the future as it has so far received excellent feedback – though he did not give specific details. As stated by Hamaguchi,

There are 145 cards in total. We haven’t decided anything in terms of future development for Queen’s Blood, but so far, the media who played it have provided very positive feedback on it, so we want to consider further expansions as a possibility.

Queen’s Blood is a turn-based card battler that pits two players with 15-card decks against each on a mirrored 3×5 grid. The goal of the game is to outscore opponents by winning two out of the three lanes as only lanes that are won by a player count toward their overall score – though a player can win with just one lane if their score is large enough.

Players use one card per turn in an attempt to control squares on the grid, each card having its own points and cost. Cards also have abilities, such as the power to expand upon a player’s position on the grid in specific directions, potentially flip a square that is already controlled by the other player, add or subtract power from cards, or even flat out destroy them.

The game ends when no cards can be placed anymore. The points are then tallied up and a winner is determined.

New cards can be earned by buying them in shops in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or by beating other characters in Queen’s Blood matches.

Queen’s Blood is the latest iteration of collectible card games introduced to the Final Fantasy series, the others being Triple Triad from Final Fantasy VIII, and Tetra Master from Final Fantasy IX.

Hamaguchi, who replaced Tetsuya Nomura as the game’s lead director in 2021, also told Red Bull that he’d like gamers to try out the Fort Condor mini-game.

I definitely want players to try out the Queen’s Blood card game, but I would actually like to take the opportunity to introduce one of the other mini-games here. While you’re traveling through the Junon area and helping Chadley with a job involving a protorelic, you’ll be able to play the Fort Condor game.

We’ve adjusted and altered the rules from when it was playable in INTERmission and Cloud, and the team can now enter the battlefield as controllable units, so that’s one I really want players to experience and enjoy.
