Deathloop Is a Sequel to Dishonored, says Devs

Bethesda confirmed that the two universes of popular Arkane games, Deathloop and Dishonored, are in fact connected.

The story of Deathloop follows the protagonist, Colt, who wakes up on the dreary island of Blackreef. He soon learns that every time he dies, he will be brought back in an infinite loop unless he can kill the eight Visionaries of the island. All eight of these characters must be killed in a single day in order to escape. Over many loops, fans began to recognize small call backs to Dishonored that led them to believe the two games may be connected.

Dishonored‘s story takes place over the course of two main line installments, extensive DLC, and the standalone expansion–Death of the Outsider. The first game takes place in the dreary, industrial city of Dunwall. It follows Corvo Attano, a bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles, who is framed for her murder. In turn, he becomes a vengeful assassin who seeks revenge for her murder. In contrast, Dishonored 2 takes place in the bright city of Karnaca. After the Empress is dethroned by a witch, the player has the choice to play as the Empress or her father–Corvo Attano–in an attempt to reclaim the throne.

The connection between the two franchises come with the last installment, Death of the Outsider. On a recent Xbox podcast from Larry Hryb, Xbox’s Major Nelson, developers Dinga Bakaba and Harvey Smith reveal that fans were right–Deathloop and Dishonored are linked.

“It was nice to see the community peek on the little clues that we did sprinkles everywhere,” says Bakaba, “that, yes indeed, we envisioned Deathloop to be happening in the future after The Death of the Outsider.”

They mention Deathloop being a sequel set far in the future after the events of Death of the Outsider. Bakaba cites easter eggs such as the Dunwall Tower logo on the Heritage gun and conversations between NPCs heard in passing. According to the devs, Blackreef is supposed to be a small island off the coast of Tyvia–an island mentioned throughout the Dishonored franchise, but never visited in game.

Deathloop is available on all platforms, and there is a new update called Goldenloop available to play now.
