Ash Ketchum Will Not Be the Protagonist in New Pokémon Anime.

Today TV Tokyo premiered a trailer for the upcoming new Pokémon anime. This trailer indicates that Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) might not be the protagonist in the anime. The trailer shows off the Paldea starters, Spigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxley among older starters. It follows by showing a scene featuring a shiny Rayquaza. The trailer ends showing two new protagonists named Riko and Roy. This will mark the first time in the series history that Ash and Pikachu will not star as the main protagonists. The presence of Pokémon not available in the Paldea region in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet video games, suggests that this series may focus on traveling to many regions similar to the Pocket Monsters 2019 series.

History of a Champion

The Pokémon anime debuted in April 1997 in Japan, and for the series 26-year history it has followed the journey of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu. In the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime Ash finally managed to win his first ever Pokémon league championships in the Alola region. In the most recent series Ash became recognized as the world champion after defeating Leon. Even with these outstanding achievements Ash’s dream of becoming a Pokémon Master remains yet to be achieved. As of the final episode of the Pocket Monsters 2019 series, Ash will be continuing to chase his dream.

What the Future Holds

It isn’t quite over for Ash Ketchum and company just yet. An 11-episode miniseries that stars Ash, Misty (Kasumi), and Brock (Takeshi) will air starting on January 13th. The miniseries is set after the end of Pocket Monsters 2019 and will serve as a send off for the characters. It is currently unknown if Ash and his friends may make guest appearances in the new Pokémon anime.

The new series is titled Pocket Monsters 2023. The series will start airing in April of 2023 on TV Tokyo.
