A Quick Rundown on Using Cheats in The Sims 4
Before you start punching cheats into your game, you might want a quick reminder on how to enter cheats and a few quick handy tips.
First, to enter cheats in The Sims 4, you must enable them. This is a quick process. You must first open up the cheat console window, which is where you input your cheats. The method you do this depends on which platform you’re playing on:
- PC: Ctrl + Shift + C
- Mac: Command + Shift + C
- PlayStation and Xbox: Hold All Four Shoulder Buttons Together
When done correctly, a thin white box will appear in the top left corner of your game screen. This is the cheat console, where you enter your cheats.
To enable cheats, make sure the cheat console is open and you have it selected. Then, type in the following command: testingcheats true. If done right, you’ll get a message underneath notifying you that cheats have been enabled. You can now freely enter cheats in your game, either by inputting them into the cheat console, or left shift-clicking on your Sims, horses, or objects. You will have to reenter “testingcheats true” every time you enter the game.
If you are playing The Sims 4 and want to disable cheats, you can do so by entering “testingcheats false” into the cheat console. As before, you’ll be notified when this works.
To close the cheat console, use the same method as for opening it. You can bring up the cheat console anytime while playing the game.
It’s generally a good idea to save your game before you enter cheats, in case it goes wrong or you make a mistake. Also, it’s a good idea to practice cheats on either an unused household or on a household without saving.
With that all said and done, let’s get straight on with The Sims 4 Horse Ranch cheats!
All Horse Ranch Cheats
There aren’t a huge number of cheats that comes shipped with The Sims 4 Horse Ranch (at least not compared to previous Expansions), but they are worth mentioning. You might want to give your Sims the new traits, or level up your Sim’s skill levels, or their horse’s. Let’s go through them all.
Trait Cheats
Traits play an important role in how your Sims behave, influencing their desires, how they react to certain situations, and more. That’s why choosing the right traits are essential. Horse Ranch has lots of new gameplay centered around horses, ranches, and nectar making. With that, there are two traits that you can assign your Sims, plus a third reward trait. These trait cheats are handy for applying these new traits to pre-existing Sims. You can also remove them if you want. To do this, replace “equip” with “remove” in the cheats below.
When done right, the trait will appear in your Sim’s Traits panel under Simology.
I personally find trait cheats in The Sims 4 the most difficult to get to work. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. If a trait cheat you enter doesn’t work the first time, try a few things:
- Try adding (or removing) the word “Trait_” before the trait’s name in the cheat command (e.g. have “Trait_HorseLover” instead of just “HorseLover” after “traits.equip_trait”).
- Try playing around with capitalizing the words (e.g. “Trait_” instead of “trait_”).
- If you try getting it to work several times on the same Sim, try exiting and reentering the game and trying again. This is why saving your game before you enter cheats is a good idea!
Cheat Command | What It Does |
traits.equip_trait HorseLover | Adds the Horse Lover trait. |
traits.equip_trait trait_Rancher | Adds the Rancher trait. |
traits.equip_trait MasterTrainer | Adds the Grand Champ Trainer reward trait. This trait is usually a reward from completing the Championship Rider aspiration. |
Sim Skill Cheats
The Sims 4 Horse Ranch comes with two new skills: Horse Riding and Nectar Making. Both skills are rewarding, fun, and can make your Sims a very tidy profit. If you want to get the best of out these skills, you ideally want to max them out. That takes a lot of work, time and commitment – or you can just cheat.
The Horse Riding Skill – called the Equestrian Skill in the cheat command – goes as far up as level 10. The Nectar Making Skill, on the other hand, is considered a minor skill in The Sims 4, and therefore only goes as far as level 5. When entering either the Horse Riding or Nectar Making Skill cheats, make sure you add the number of the level you want to set the skill to, otherwise the cheat won’t work.
Cheat Command | What It Does |
stats.set_skill_level AdultMajor_EquestrianSkill [1 – 10] | Sets the Horse Riding Skill to the level you input. |
stats.set_skill_level AdultMinor_RanchNectar [1 – 5] | Sets the Nectar Making Skill to the level you input. |
Horse Skill Cheats
Just like Sims, horses get skills, too! There are 4, to be precise: Agility, Endurance, Jumping, and Temperament. It’s up to you and your Sims to guide their horses and help raise these different skills. Or, you can use cheats to max out their skills. Having your horse’s skills at certain levels are important for success in competitions and community jobs in Chestnut Ridge. In order to have a shot at winning the Ultimate Horse Championship, your horse must have all four skills maxed out. This takes a lot of time and patience, particularly if your horse has traits that hinders the progress of increasing their skill levels, so you might want to consider using these cheats, unless you’re happy to do it the hard traditional way.
All horse levels start at 1 and go all the way up to 10.
How to Get Your Horse’s ID
There is something very important you need to add onto the horse skill cheats: your horse’s ID. This is a number a horse is assigned in The Sims 4 in order to identify it. You need to find out your horse’s ID number so you can add it into the four cheats below. How do you do this? It’s actually pretty straightforward.
There’s a cheat command that will directly retrieve your horse’s ID. Don’t be put off by the name of the command; it applies to horses as well as Sims. This is what you need to enter into the cheat console: sims.get_sim_id_by_name [First Name] [Last Name]
Make sure that when entering this cheat, you have the correct first and last name of the horse you want to get the ID. If the horse only has a first name and not a last (which can happen with pets in The Sims 4), just entering the first name and it should work.
When the ID command works, the ID number will appear in a pop-up message below the cheat console. It’s a long number, a good dozen numbers or so, so you might want to make a note of it so you can use it in the skill cheats. When you use the horse’s ID in any of the skill cheats, you’ll know that it’s worked because you’ll get a pop-up notification telling you your horse’s skill level has increased (or maxed out, if you entered 10).
Cheat Command | What It Does |
stats.set_skill_level Horse_Agility [1 – 10] [Horse ID] | Sets the Horse Agility Skill to the level you input. |
stats.set_skill_level Horse_Endurance [1 – 10] [Horse ID] | Sets the Horse Endurance Skill to the level you input. |
stats.set_skill_level Horse_Jumping [1 – 10] [Horse ID] | Sets the Horse Jumping Skill to the level you input. |
stats.set_skill_level Horse_Temperament [1 – 10] [Horse ID] | Sets the Horse Temperament Skill to the level you input. |
Career Cheats
There technically aren’t any new careers that comes with The Sims 4 Horse Ranch, although your Sims can easily make a living out of horse competitions, community jobs, and selling nectar. Saying that, if you wish, you can assign your Sims three minor careers: Horse Trainer, Mysterious Rancher, and Ranch Hand. These will appear in the Careers panel when inputted into the cheat console.
If you want your Sim to quit any of the careers, replace “add” with “remove” in the cheat command. Alternatively, you can have your Sim “retire” by using the word “retire” instead of “add”.
Cheat Command | What It Does |
careers.add_career HorseTrainer | Assigns your Sim the Horse Trainer career. |
careers.add_career MysteriousRancher | Assigns your Sim the Mysterious Rancher career. |
careers.add_career RanchHand | Assigns your Sim the Ranch Hand career. |
Aspiration Cheats
The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Expansion gives you two new aspirations to fulfil: Championship Rider and Expert Nectar Maker.
The Championship Rider aspiration is only one level as opposed to three, like most other aspirations in The Sims 4. However, it is very hard to complete and takes a long time and a lot of effort. It requires you to max out your Sim’s Horse Riding skill, compete in 15 horse competitions, win 5 Master Horse Riding competitions, and place at the Ultimate Horse Championship.
The Expert Nectar Maker is also only one level, but just as with the Championship Rider aspiration, is it a difficult and time-consuming aspiration to complete. You’ll be required to reach level 5 of the Nectar Making Skill, make 50 Excellent quality nectar bottles, and sell 100,000 simoleons worth of nectar.
If you wish, you can skip all the hard work and just complete the aspirations with one cheat. There’s also another cheat that will give you satisfaction points, which is normally gained from completing Whims. This is useful if you need points to unlock rewards in the Reward Store. These two cheats aren’t new to The Sims 4, but since Horse Ranch has two new (tricky) aspirations, it’s worth giving you a reminder of them.
Cheat Command | What It Does |
aspirations.complete_current_milestone | Completes the current milestone of your Sim’s aspiration. If it’s just one tier, they’ll complete the aspiration. |
sims.give_satisfaction_points [add in any number here] | Adds the number of satisfaction points to your Sim depending on the number you put in. |
