An Overview of Chestnut Ridge

It’s been nearly 10 years since The Sims 4 came out, and we’re really getting spoiled for choice with the amount of worlds available to play in. What’s new about Chestnut Ridge? Is it a good place to live, or at least worth visiting for a day out? How is it different to all the other worlds?

Chestnut Ridge is shipped with The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Expansion Pack. Since this pack focuses on horses and ranch life, it’s expected that the new world would reflect this, and it very much does so. Chestnut Ridge is inspired by the real world American Old West. While The Sims 4 is set in modern times, it has an old-time feel to it. There’s even a proper western-style town that you can visit, plus a large gulch to explore, and prairies and farmland. If you think about it, Chestnut Ridge is similar to Henford-on-Bagley from Cottage Living, with lots of space and a town you can visit. The only difference is that Henford is British while Chestnut Ridge is American. Plus, Chestnut Ridge is a beautiful and tranquil world, so if you’re looking for a getaway from the fast modern life in the suburbs, Chestnut Ridge is perfect.

There’s a little backstory to Chestnut Ridge. It was formed after a community embraced the connection between their love for horses and the land. They also discovered that it was a good place for growing nectar, which brings another element to the world. This is reflected in the fact that you can harvest grape vines around the land.

There are four households residing in Chestnut Ridge, and they each have their own stories. They first appeared in the trailer for Horse Ranch, and you can play as them in the game. You’ll learn more about them later in this guide.

Horses, ranches and nectar making are at the heart of Chestnut Ridge.

Climate in Chestnut Ridge (Seasons Expansion)

If you have The Sims 4 Seasons Expansion Pack installed, what can you expect from the weather and climate? Being a world with dusty riding paths and a gulch, you might think Chestnut Ridge was a dry world. It isn’t. You get all four seasons; spring, summer, fall and winter. And yes, you’ll even get snow in the winter, enough to build a snowman and have snowball fights and such! There’s rain too, but not a lot of it, or so it seems. Temperature-wise, it can drop into freezing in the winter, but it doesn’t seem to get ridiculously hot in the summer, and it’s only mild at best in the spring and fall. These conditions are ideal for horse riding, running around a ranch, and growing ingredients for nectar, so the climate shouldn’t be too much of an issue in Chestnut Ridge.

You can expect to get all seasons and weather in Chestnut Ridge, including snow.

You can expect to get all seasons and weather in Chestnut Ridge, including snow.

Collectibles in Chestnut Ridge

If you remember my last world guide that I wrote for The Sims 4, San Sequoia, there wasn’t much in regards to collectibles. That’s not the case for Chestnut Ridge. When exploring, I found lots of harvestable plants, rocks to dig up, and hiding places for frogs. I’ll list them here for your convenience, including the neighborhood and where you can find them. If I find anymore that I’ve missed, I’ll update this guide.

Lots in Chestnut Ridge

There are lots of Lots in Chestnut Ridge, including residential and community lots. We’ll break it down by neighborhood, listing them in alphabetical order. Like most worlds in The Sims 4, Chestnut Ridge is made up of three neighborhoods: Galloping Gulch, New Appaloosa, and Riders’ Glen.

Galloping Gulch

Yes, there is a gulch in Chestnut Ridge, and this neighborhood allows you to go there. It’s a truly scenic place, and even better still for riding around on a horse. This is quite an interesting neighborhood, as it has an abandoned shack, a broken bridge, and a cave you can explore. There are also some spots where you can take a look at the amazing view, or practice some skills with your horse.

Big Sky Reach

Lot Type Rental
Cost §390 per day
Size 20 x 15
Bedrooms 4
Bathrooms 2
Lot Traits Bracing Breezes
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

There’s only one vacation lot in all of Chestnut Ridge, and this place is it. If you want a getaway from modern life, there’s no better than Big Sky Reach. It’s a very rural and rustic cabin out in the gulch of Chestnut Ridge.

It comes with four bedrooms and can accommodate up to five Sims. The downstairs bedroom has bunk beds, upstairs there’s a room with a double bed, and the other room has a single bed. There’s a large dining table with six chairs, and a large sitting room space. There’s two bathrooms as well, so your Sims won’t have to wait too long to use the bathroom or shower. Outside, there’s a campfire with logs around it.

This is a great vacation lot for a stay at Chestnut Ridge. However, there’s no accommodation for horses, so don’t think you’ll come here to stay and go on horse riding treks (which is a shame, actually).

Palomino Junction

Lot Type Residential
Occupied No
Cost §19,492
Size 50 x 50
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms 1
Lot Traits Bracing Breezes
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

The single vacant residential lot in Galloping Gulch isn’t the biggest by any means – but there is a lot of land, which means plenty of room for expansion, whether it’s expanding the small one bedroom, one bathroom house, or adding a horse paddock and stalls into the large space. This property has a lot of potential for customization, so don’t be put off by the fact that it’s only got one bedroom and bathroom. As long as you’re willing to get constructing and be creative, there’s room for plenty more Sims. There’s a pond on this lot as well, so you can’t go wrong with that.

Canyon Crossing

Lot Type Residential
Occupied Gooseman Household
Cost §26,997
Size 20 x 20
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms 1
Lot Traits Bracing Breezes, Private Dwelling
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

This is the home of the Gooseman household, consisting of a man and his horse. But by all means, don’t be afraid to boot them out and move your own Sims into this property. However, you might be more inclined to move into Palomino Junction instead, since it’s bigger and cheaper, plus do you really want to kick a Sim and their horse out? The house on this lot is similar to Palomino Junction, with only one bedroom and bathroom, but there’s no reason why you can’t expand and add more rooms. Plus, this property has a pre-built space for a horse.

Other Notable Things About Galloping Gulch

Galloping Gulch is enormous, and there’s plenty to see and discover in this area alone. If you’re a horse rider, this is a brilliant place to take your horse out for a ride. It’s scenic, spacious, and there’s lots of riding paths. Also, there are lots of jumps and barrels to train your horse with around the area, so you don’t have to spend money on placing them at your Lot. Other things of note are a picnic area with a campfire, a spot for fishing, a place to take a dip in the water, view points, and the community board. There are special bushes around the gulch where you can take a nap, relieve yourself, and WooHoo.

The Galloping Gulch Horse Ghost

When talking about this area, I must share one secret with you: the Phantom Horse. Head over to the dilapidated building near Canyon Crossing, where there’s a broken bridge. There’s also a horse grave here. If you come here very late at night and look closely across the canyon where the bridge is, you’ll see the ghostly horse. It’ll be surrounded by a strange mist and fade in and out of appearance. It’s a bit chilling but an amazing sight that you have to check out. It’s not known who the horse is, as the grave is marked as “Unknown Horse”, but judging by the bridge, the horse may have fallen into the canyon to its death when the bridge collapsed. It seems too much of a coincidence that the ghost appears by the broken bridge, and the gravestone is on the opposite side to where they appear.

The phantom ghost of Galloping Gulch.

The Cave

Quite a few worlds have caves you can explore, such as Oasis Springs and Sulani. Now, Chestnut Ridge has one as well. If you follow the stream at the bottom of the canyon, the cave will be at the dead end. It might be hard to spot at first with plants in the way, but you can enter and explore. Like most caves, going inside triggers a series of multiple choice options, depicting an off-screen adventure. The one in Chestnut Ridge is a little different though. There will be a series of levels, with a different challenge in each one. You have to complete the first level to get onto the next.

Where the clump of trees are on the right is the cave's location in Galloping Gulch.

New Appaloosa

New Appaloosa, aka the home of the western-style town. You could call this neighborhood the heart of the community. Also, New Appaloosa is a nod to Appaloosa Plains, the world that came with The Sims 3 Pets. If you’re looking for a place to go shopping or have a fun night out, then New Appaloosa is that place. New Appaloosa has a notable history of being Chestnut Ridge’s water hole, and you’ve got the massive Equestrian Center based here as well.

New Appaloosa, Chestnut Ridge

New Appaloosa, Chestnut Ridge

Champion’s Grove

Lot Type Residential
Occupied Sienna and Flapjack Household
Cost §69,165
Size 30 x 20
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms 1
Lot Traits Homey
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

This property is home to yet another Sim and their horse, but as always, you can move your own Sims in. Note that even though this place is quite big, there’s initially only one bedroom and bathroom, but that doesn’t stop you from adding more. This house also only has one floor, but it’s still very impressive. There’s a big open kitchen and dining area, living room space, foyer, study, bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, bathroom, and there’s a stall in the back room. Outside, you can find a table-and-chair set-up, a campfire to sit around, and a grill. If you want to add an extra bedroom, considering converting the study. You can also get an extra bathroom in if you turn the walk-in wardrobe into a room.

The Cozy Corner House

Lot Type Residential
Occupied No
Cost §17,283
Size 20 x 20
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms 1
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

This is yet another residential property that only has one bedroom and bathroom. However, don’t be shy in making changes, adding an extra floor or expanding the house; you can delete the tree next to it. This cozy cabin-like house is ideal if you want to live close to the shops and the Equestrian Center. There’s a small paddock if you want to raise a horse here as well.

Duke’s Hall

Lot Type Park
Cost §74,019
Size 40 x 30

This place is listed as a park, but it’s actually half a park and half a sort of community center. This is a good place if you want to mingle with some Sims and practice some horse training. There are barrels and jumps outside. On the ground floor, there are stalls where you can keep your horse for a bit, if you want to hang out in the building or go off and do some shopping. There’s a lounge with a bookcase downstairs, but upstairs, there’s a chess table, a bar, and a picnic table. There’s only one chess table, so if you want to play, you might have to wait if there’s other Sims. It’s not the biggest park, by any means, but it’s still a good place to go, for both your Sims and their horses.

The Oak Barrel

Lot Type Bar
Cost §86,755
Size 30 x 20
Lot Traits Convivial

This big building in New Appaloosa is hard to miss with its glass roof. This cozy and homey bar is a good place for Sims to meet up and have a drink. There’s no dance floor though, or a stereo, so unfortunately there’s no cowpoke dancing or dancing of any kind here. There’s an upstairs, but apart from some extra seating and the restrooms, you’ll probably be spending most of your time downstairs by the bar. There’s some outdoor seating as well if your Sims want some fresh air.

The Rusty Horseshoe

Lot Type Nightclub
Cost §33,559
Size 30 x 20
Lot Traits Convivial

A nightclub, in Chestnut Ridge? Why not? After a long day of horse riding, ranching and nectar making, your Sims deserve a fun night out. Where better than their local nightclub, The Rusty Horseshoe? This is the best place to have a hoedown – or do some cowpoke dancing, complete with a dance floor. There’s a bar here too, plus outdoor seating. There’s even a campfire to sit around. The Oak Barrel and The Rusty Horseshoe are situated quite close together and are similar properties. If you’re just after a drink, The Oak Barrel is probably the better option, but if you want a drink and a dance, head to The Rusty Horseshoe.

The Equestrian Center

The Equestrian Center isn’t a Lot, it’s a rabbit hole, but it’s such an important part of Chestnut Ridge that it has to be given its own special entry. It’s very hard to miss this place; it’s an enormous building with a turquoise green roof. You just click on the building to interact with it, which brings up a bunch of options.

The Equestrian Center is the hub of horse activity. There are lots of things you can do here. You can buy a horse, which will cost you a thousand simoleons regardless of the horse’s age. You can also get a rescue horse for a quarter of the price at 250 simoleons, although these horses tend to be more challenging, with more “negative” traits such as Fearful and Defiant. Horses can be sold here as well. At the Equestrian Center, you can enter horse competitions, or just spectate competitions. The Equestrian Center is also a place where you can get horse training, which will increase the skills of Temperament, Endurance, Jumping and Agility.

Other Notable Things About New Appaloosa

There’s a few other things of note around New Appaloosa. Some of the buildings in the town can be interacted with. For example, one store is a clothing store, where you can change or plan outfits. Another store allows you to buy groceries or purchase mini white and sheep. New Appaloosa also has a barbeque area, as well as a small garden with a fountain. There’s another garden in New Appaloosa, where you can plant harvestables. If you look along the high street, you’ll see a series of horse statues. There are a few horse statues around the Equestrian Center as well.

Riders’ Glen

If Galloping Gulch is, well, a gulch, and New Appaloosa is Chestnut Ridge’s town center, then Riders’ Glen comprises more of farmland, or rather ranchland. Riders’ Glen has wide open spaces, and as the name implies, is ideal for riding around on horses. It’s also a good place to run a ranch or set up for nectar making.

Riders' Glen, Chestnut Ridge.

Biscuit’s Bastion

Lot Type Residential
Occupied The Grove Family Household
Cost §85,604
Size 40 x 30
Bedrooms 3
Bathrooms 3
Lot Traits Great Acoustics, Fast Internet
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

This place is HUGE, and no surprise, it being a ranch. Biscuit’s Bastion is home to Sims, horses, and mini goats and sheep (if you wish). It’s already home to the Grove family, but if you want to move your own Sims in there, you can boot them out. This is a good place to live, with the enormous house, facilities for horses, plenty of space, and the Great Acoustics and Fast Internet lot traits.

Canter Cottage

Lot Type Residential
Occupied No
Cost §22,807
Size 30 x 30
Bedrooms 2
Bathrooms 1
Lot Traits Bracing Breezes, Homey
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

If you’re planning to own horses or mini goats and sheep, this is a good property for your Sims. The house may not be the biggest, but once again, there’s always room for expansion. Plus, unlike many of the other vacant properties, this lot has an extra bedroom, which means there’s room for a family of Sims. Outside, there are two stalls for horses, if you own more than one, and even a barrel training course and a play ball. If that wasn’t enough, next door is a large paddock with a jumping course. So while this place isn’t the biggest, there’s space for a family, space for horses, and it’s affordable.

Grapevine Terrace

Lot Type Residential
Occupied No
Cost §89,452
Size 30 x 20
Bedrooms 3
Bathrooms 2
Lot Traits Homey, Natural Light

This is the other vacant lot in the Riders’ Glen neighborhood. However, it is much more expensive, so without cheats, you won’t be buying this as your starter Sims’ first property. This residential lot differs from Canter Cottage. Apart from having more bedrooms and bathrooms, it’s also fit for nectar making, complete with a nectar making set (there’s no basement though to age your nectar faster, so you might want to think about adding this in). There’s a garden in the back as well with some pre-planted harvestables.

On the other hand, if you’d rather use this lot as a ranch, there’s nothing stopping you converting it, as there’s lots of space to play with.

Red Roan Field

Lot Type Residential
Occupied No
Cost §9,987
Size 64 x 64
Bedrooms None
Bathrooms None
Lot Traits Bracing Breezes
Lot Challenges Wild Prairie Grass

If you’re looking for a mostly empty property to build something on, then this is it. There’s nothing here except a few rocks and plants, making it an ideal place to build your own ranch, or you can replace it with a community lot such as a spa (Spa Day Game Pack) or restaurant (Dine Out Game Pack).

Red Roan Field

Red Roan Field

Sweet Nectar Glen

Lot Type Residential
Occupied The Nectar Making Duo Household
Cost §89,754
Size 30 x 20
Bedrooms 2
Bathrooms 3
Lot Traits Homey, Natural Light

This is another property with nectar making in mind, and unlike Grapevine Terrace, this place does come with a basement for aging nectar. There’s also a smaller building out back with a nectar making machine, a drinks bar, and a study. The house itself is pretty big, with two levels and a large space downstairs. This place is already home to The Nectar Making Duo, but you can swap them out for another household if you wish. Don’t expect this place to be cheap though.

Other Notable Things about Riders’ Glen

On the surface, Riders’ Glen may not be as exciting as the other two neighborhoods in Chestnut Ridge, but there’s still some stuff to look out for. Like Galloping Gulch, it’s a good place to take your horse for a ride. There’s one path where you ride through a stream. There’s a few covered bridges in this area, but you can’t go through them, sadly. Also like Galloping Gulch, around this area are plenty of places to practice barrel racing and jumping. There’s also a pond to go fishing, and a picnic area.

If you look in the background of Riders’ Glen, there’s two things of note. One is a giant formation of rocks that looks a bit like a horse’s head. Beyond that is a train track. Trains as scenery aren’t new to The Sims 4, but occasionally, a steam train will travel along this line.

Residents of Chestnut Ridge

So there are plenty of residential lots in Chestnut Ridge, and with that are residents. Not all the properties are lived in. Altogether, there are four households residing in Chestnut Ridge. Here they all are, grouped by household, so you can get the most out of them while playing them.

This retired horse lover lives alone with his horse Duke and prefers it that way. Don may be an elder Sim, but with a Horse Riding skill at level 7 and Duke having nearly all his skills maxed out, you can still make a pretty buck from competitions and community jobs. His Angling Ace aspiration, like for fishing and level 3 Fishing skill suggests this might be an alternative pastime for him when he’s not horse riding.

Duke is a beautiful horse with nearly all skills maxed out, making him an ideal competition horse. With Don being an elder Sim and Duke being an adult, you might have to think about what to do with Duke before Don’s time comes. Perhaps another Sim could make use of him? I’m sure he’d be welcomed in any household.

Umber works on a ranch with his family but is a Freelance Artist. You can always have him quit if you’d rather focus on other endeavors. Strangely, Umber doesn’t seem to have any skills (unless I’m mistaken), so you’ll have to start from scratch if you plan to do any horse riding. Another thing of note is that Umber seems to like musical activities such as playing instruments, so that might be something to pursue.

He appears to have fallen out with Marissa Tracey, although what about I don’t know.

Dani’s focus seems to be on nectar making as opposed to horse riding. This makes Dani a good Sim to play if you want to have a go at the Nectar Making skill. Their house is well equipped for this activity as well, with a basement to fast age nectar. Their high Gardening skill also makes it ideal for growing their own nectar ingredients. Their relationships are quite notable. They and Marissa Tracey are sweethearts, yet have a bad compatibility. Also, they have recently been hurt by Roberto Crinkletop, according to their Sentiments.

Marissa likes nectar making like Dani, but perhaps isn’t into it as much. Interesting to note is that she doesn’t like gardening, a useful skill for nectar making. She likes comedy, so you could enter her into the Entertainment career for a bit of extra money. Unlike Dani, Marissa gets on with Roberto Crinkletop. However, she has fallen out with Wren Grove, so watch out whenever these two interact, unless you want to try and get them to make up.

Flapjack, shortened from Salt Lake Flapjack, is Sienna’s prize-winning horse. Although he hasn’t won any competitions, noted by his profile, you’ll soon be winning them left, right and center. He’s worth a LOT of money if you choose to sell him, but if you are seriously considering this, it’s probably better to keep him and use him for competitions, as you’ll make good money from winning.
