Destiny 2: Lightfall has finally arrived with a new destination, new campaign, new subclasses and, of course, new Exotics. One of these new Exotics is called the Deterministic Chaos, a brand new Machine Gun that fires special debuff shots based on rhythm and timing. It’s a really unique weapon, and one you will certainly want to get your hands on.

Prerequisites
The main prerequisite that is required to start the journey for the Deterministic Chaos is that you need to have beaten the Lightfall campaign. This means completing the “Desperate Measures” mission and watching the final cutscene.
You’ll actually be given the quest automatically as part of the campaign wrap-up: speak to everyone you need to in the Tower and then make your way back to Neomuna. Nimbus will be there and they will ask you to come with them to a vigil in the Hall of Heroes.
Accepting this step will give you the Unfinished Business questline. If you manage to complete this, then that shiny new Cloud Strider Machine Gun will be yours.

Unfinished Business Questline
Here are the quest steps for Unfinished Business. In total, there are 13 steps, but a majority of those are just turning in items or speaking to NPCs:
- Go to the Hall of Heroes.
- Visit Nimbus to find out why they left Rohan’s induction ceremony early.
- Collect cipher qubits from the Vex and use them to extract Rohan’s data from Cloud Accretions in Neomuna.
- Locate the final data packet in Maya’s Retreat.
- Survive the Vex attack and recover the data packet.
- Regroup with Nimbus and Osiris in Radiosonde to find out what was in Rohan’s notes.
- Retrieve a Vex compass from the Thrilladrome Lost Sector in Liming Harbour
- Create chaos in Ahimsa Park to draw Shadow Legion forces away from Calus’ ship. Defeat 100 enemies in Ahimsa Park with your abilities.
- The passkey’s other component is a Seed of Silver Wings. One can be found in Calus’ trove deep within the Typhon Imperator.
- Return to Nimbus in Striders’ Gate to build the passkey.
- Complete the mission “What Remains“
- Bring the Conceptual Mind’s memory core to Nimbus in Striders’ Gate.
- Go to the Hall of Heroes to honour those who cut their years short for the sake of humanity.
A Journey’s End
Step 3 Notes
The third step of the quest asks you to seek out and destroy Vex to pick up an item called cipher qubits. This can be easily achieved by either playing Terminal Overload, the new event in Neomuna where you will fight waves of both Vex and Shadow Legion, or by visiting the weekly Vex Incursion Zone. Said Incursion Zone will be marked on the map and will have predominantly Vex roaming the area, making for easy pickings.
The other part of the quest is to collect Rohan’s data from Cloud Accretions. These are the planetary resource of Neomuna, which award rank with Nimbus on pick-up. The main problem with these is that, as a planetary resource, their location is completely random. To circumvent this, chuck on Perfect Resource Detector Mod on your Ghost and head around Neomuna.
Once you’ve found all of them, you can continue.

Deterministic Chaos Exotic Overview
The Deterministic Chaos is an interesting new addition to the Machine Gun family. It’s a weapon built around rhythm and timing, something we don’t see a lot in Destiny 2.
The intrinsic Exotic perk is Heavy Metal. When holding down the trigger to fire fully automatically, every 4th bullet will inflict Weaken on whoever you hit. This works in tandem with the other Exotic trait, Vexadecimal, which makes it so that every 4th Heavy Metal shot (or every 16th shot if you’re firing in full-auto) will also make targets Volatile.
There are multiple ways to keep track of how many shots you’ve fired. When firing the weapon from the hip, a set of four grey circles appear on the left-hand side of the Deterministic Chaos. These fill as you shoot, with each of the larger circles representing a Heavy Metal shot: when all four of them have been filled, the next shot will be the Volatile Vexadecimal one. You can also look at the gun itself, which has a counter below the reticle.

Deterministic Chaos is a really fun weapon, but one you certainly need to get used to. It does good damage against basically any target in the game, with the Weaken and Volatile damage it can trigger allowing it serves as both a damage and support weapon. It shreds through minor and major enemies and does a respectable amount of damage to bosses and Champions.
You do have to be pretty all or nothing with it, though. If you stop shooting while half-through to your next Vexadecimal shot, it will cancel the entire stack instantly: you’ll have to start again with less ammo in the mag, making it harder to get that Volatile shot off. Having to continue firing to maintain that rhythm, even if there aren’t any enemies close at hand, can feel a bit clunky at times.
On the whole, Deterministic Chaos is another good addition to the Machine Gun archetype in Destiny 2. It does add clear very well, has a unique Exotic perk that makes it stand out, has the potential to do good mini-boss and Champion damage and, thanks to its ability to ably Void debuffs, it can even serve as a support weapon. However, it is still just a Machine Gun. Many Guardians would rather use their Exotic Heavy on something that’s going to net them boss-killing damage, not another source of add-clear.
With that being said, though, give it a shot (or four). You may end up drawn into the rhythm.
