How to Get Necrochasm in Destiny 2 | Crota’s End Raid Exotic Guide

In this guide, we'll go over all of the quest steps for the Bottomless Pit Exotic Quest in Destiny 2 which is how all players can unlock the Crota's End Exotic, Necrochasm. Returning alongside Crota's End in D2 is it's iconic Exotic Auto Rifle, Necrochasm, which puts the power of the explosive Cursed Thrall into your very hands.

Alongside the reprised Crota’s End Raid, an old Exotic has also returned to Destiny 2. Necrochasm, one of the first Raid Exotics and a powerful Weapon of Sorrow, makes its first appearance in D2 as an Exotic Kinetic Auto Rifle which allows you to use the powers of the Hive and turn your enemies into explosive Cursed Thrall. It’s a powerful, nostalgic tool and a great fit for any Guardians arsenal, but getting your hands on it can be a bit grindy. Unless you completed Crota’s End during Contest Mode, you’ll have to complete the Bottomless Pit Exotic Quest to get yourself the weapon which can be quite tedious.

Bottomless Pit is a pretty arduous quest at some points, requiring multiple lucky runs of Crota’s End to complete. However, there are a few ways to streamline the process, if you know what you’re doing.

Here’s how to get the Crota’s End Raid Exotic, Necrochasm, in Destiny 2.

How to Get the Necrochasm in D2

Unlike the last few Destiny 2 Raid Exotics, Necrochasm has returned to us as the reward at the end of an Exotic Quest. The last Raid Exotic to get the quest treatment was Divinity all the way back in Shadowkeep. For any Destiny veterans, part of the Necrochasm quest will be very familiar to you, especially if you trounced down to beat Crota all the way back in The Dark Below.

Of course, to start progressing your quest you’ll need to, well, obtain it first. You can do this by beating Crota in the Crota’s End Raid. Once the Son of Oryx has fallen, you can go to his abandoned Sword: this is where you can purchase Deepsight weapons and additional rolls of gear using Spoils of Conquest but, on your first-time completion, there will be another thing to claim here. That is the Exotic Quest titled Bottomless Pit.

This is the quest you’ll need to progress to eventually obtain Necrochasm. Parts of this quest are far shorter than the rest, with the final step requiring multiple runs of Crota’s End to efficiently accomplish. It should also be noted that, as soon as you acquire the Bottomless Pit quest, you’ll be given a Common rarity weapon called the Husk of the Pit: This is a stripped-back, basic version of Necrochasm that you’ll need to use for the first quest step.

When you’re ready to take on the quest, stick on your Husk of the Pit and get ready to kill some Hive.

You can accept the Bottomless Pit quest from The Throne World's Riches at the end of Crota's End | Destiny 2 Necrochasm

Step 1

The first step of the Bottomless Pit Exotic Quest in Destiny 2 is to kill 100 Hive targets anywhere in the system with Husk of the Pit, with kills in the Crota’s End Raid granting additional progress. If this is true, then hopping into Crota’s End would be the most efficient way of completing this step (as future steps require encounter completions in the Raid).

However, as of release, it appears that this first step is bugged for some players, where killing Hive with Husk of the Pit while in Crota’s End will not generate any progress at all. To check if this is true for you, hop into the Raid’s starting encounter and kill the Thrall which spawns there.

If you need an alternative source of Hive for your quest, the Moon is the best location. To be more specific, teleport to the Sorrow’s Harbor Landing Zone and then make your way to the nearby K1 Revelation Lost Sector. This Lost Sector has more than enough Hive to fully complete this step of the quest (should you kill them all with Necrochasm, of course) and you’ll be on to step 2 in no time flat.

Step 2

The second step is where things get trickier (and more tedious). Once step 1 has been completed, you’ll get another, lesser version of Necrochasm as a reward. This is the Eidolon Ally, a Legendary Auto Rifle which comes with a Reload Masterwork and the perks Rangefinder and Perpetual Motion. It also has the Cursed Thrall Origin Trait found on all of the Crota’s End weapons. Step 2 of the quest doesn’t necessarily involve Eidolon Ally but it does give you a taste of how Necrochasm plays and feels.

To complete the next part of Bottomless Pit in D2, you will need to acquire 20 Essence of Oversoul materials from the Crota’s End Raid. Essence of Oversoul is an Exotic material that has a chance to drop on each encounter in Crota’s End and to complete this step, you’ll need to collect 20 of them: Unfortunately, Essence has a rather low drop rate, meaning you’ll have to run the Raid a lot to get the materials you need.

Fortunately, there are two things which make this a bit easier. The first is that you can farm Crota’s End for Essence of Oversoul, even if you’ve already claimed the Pinnacle Rewards for the week. This means that, if you’re dedicated enough, you can run Crota’s End over and over again, continually gaining opportunities to get Oversoul Essence. Alternatively, you can farm an encounter over and over again for the same effect.

The other important thing to point out is that the Triumphs attached to Crota’s End also give the Essence of Oversoul. Certain Triumphs attached to the Swordbearer Title will award Essence of Oversoul upon completion, giving you an additional avenue to collect them. The Triumphs which can give you Oversoul include:

  • Perfect Truth: Complete all encounters in the Crota’s End raid without dying and without leaving the activity.
  • In Unison: Complete all encounters in Crota’s End with a full fireteam of the same class (all Hunter, all Warlocks or all Titans).
  • Broken Throne: Complete the Master tier of Crota’s End.

You’ll also receive an Essence of Oversoul for completing the Raid Challenge associated with each encounter and for completing the encounter-specific triumphs (such as Feather-Light or Threatening Reach). In total, there are 10 additional Essence of Oversoul sources via triumphs, meaning that you’ll still have to farm Crota’s End a fair bit to get to the end.

Step 3

Eventually, after either grinding the Raid a bunch or completing Swordbearer Title triumphs, you’ll earn 20 Essence of Oversoul for the quest. This will take you to step 3 which… is currently unknown. Because of how much Oversoul is required to reach step 3, most players simply haven’t reached this point yet: This is especially true because of the fact that Bungie instantly gave everyone who beat Crota’s End on Contest Mode Necrochasm immediately.

The final step will likely require beating Crota once more and then claiming Necrochasm from the Sword at the end, or it will involve imbuing the Eidolon Ally with the Essence to turn it into Necrochasm. Whatever the case, we’ll update this guide with more information on step 3 when it becomes available.

Necrochasm Exotic Overview

So, how does Necrochasm fare in Destiny 2 compared to Destiny 1?

Necrochasm is an Exotic Kinetic Auto Rifle belonging to the Rapid-Fire Frame family (which is 720 RPM compared to the 900 RPM Necrochasm was in D1). Its main trait is Cursebringer which makes precision final blows trigger a Cursed Thrall explosion, with final blows from the Cursed Thrall explosion refilling the magazine.

Meanwhile, Necrochasm’s second Exotic trait is a spin on the beloved perk Desperado, Desperation. Reloading after a precision final blow or a final blow with a Cursed Thrall explosion increases your rate of fire and improves stability and aim assist for a short time. With Desperation active, you can get Necrochasm back to 900 RPM.

As a weapon, Necrochasm is pretty good as far as Auto Rifles go. As an Exotic Kinetic weapon, it receives a lot of additional damage in PvE which will warrant a lot of usage by fans of Auto Rifles and those looking to take advantage of the Cursed Thrall explosions (which essentially act like a slightly unique version of Firefly). In PvP, it holds its own fairly well, with Desperation allowing it to rapidly increase its TTK. While it may be outclassed in other areas, Necrochasm seems like a fitting addition to the likes of Vex Mythoclast, Touch of Malice and other Raid Exotics present in Destiny 2.

Additionally, one very cool detail about the D2 variant of Necrochasm is that it’s a Weapon of Sorrow. To those in the know, you’ll understand that this makes Necrochasm a viable pairing with the Warlock’s Necrotic Grips Exotic: when paired together, the Cursed Thrall explosions from Necrochasm’s Cursebringer perk will spread the poison from Necrotic Grips. This is similar to how Necrotics work with Thorn and Ostio Striga, giving Warlocks an incredibly strong boost when using Necrochasm.

That was how to get Necrochasm and complete the Bottomless Pit Exotic Quest in Destiny 2
