How to Complete Destiny 2’s Gaze Amaze Raid Challenge

King's Fall Raid Challenges have arrived with the addition of Master Mode. The Basilica and Warpriest Challenges have come and gone, and now the Golgoroth Challenge called Gaze Amaze stands. Your fireteam will have to adapt their strategies and ready themselves. Here's how to complete Gaze Amaze.

How to Complete Destiny 2's Gaze Amaze Raid Challenge

King’s Fall’s return to Destiny 2 has bought with it a new batch of Raid challenges. That means more loot and extra rewards if you decide to tackle the obstacles that each Challenge asks of you and your fireteam.

There are a total of 5 encounters available for the Raid. The Basilica Encounter and the Warpriest Encounters have previously been covered and you can find coverage on how to complete them here.

The third of these challenges has arrived with the Golgoroth Raid Challenge called Gaze Amaze. This encounter with the spider-inspired Ogre has one of the most interesting Raid mechanics in all of Destiny, with a legitimate taunt system. While the challenge isn’t particularly difficult, it requires some more work and coordination than normal.

Here’s how to complete the Gaze Amaze King’s Fall Raid Challenge in Destiny 2.

How Do Raid Challenges Works?

In case you are completely unaware of how Raid Challenges work, here’s a quick rundown.

Once Master Mode has launched for a new Raid, that Raid gets access to Raid challenges. In Normal mode, these can be completed for bonus loot drops from that specific encounter. Meanwhile, in Master Mode, completing these challenges is the way to net yourself Adept Raid loot.

There are an equal number of challenges as an encounter that give loot. For Deep Stone Crypt, for example, there are 4 Challenges. For King’s Fall and Vault of Glass, there are 5.

The Challenges rotate weekly starting with the first encounter and cycling through. After 5 weeks, it will go back to the first encounter Challenge. You will need all Challenges completed for the Raid Seal. You must also complete them on Master Mode, too.

Now that is settled, how do you specifically complete Gaze Amaze in King’s Fall?

King’s Fall Challenge 3: Gaze Amaze

The Gaze Amaze Raid Challenge takes place in the Golgoroth Encounter. This is the 3rd official encounter in King’s Fall and asks Guardians to face the mutated form of Golgoroth, an Ogre who lurks deep within the Dreadnought. The encounter begins by shooting the large orb on the ceiling above where Golgoroth spawns.

Usually, Golgoroth would stand in the central pit, shooting at any Guardians who come close by. You and your team would deal with the adds that spawn on the left and right. Once that is done, two would stay behind to take Golgoroth’s Gaze (one for the left, one for the right) as the other 4 prepare for damage.

Shoot the orbs on the ceiling, and stand in the pools where they form to get the damage buff all the while the 2 Gazers take turns stealing the Gaze from Golgoroth. What out for the Unstable Light buff that one of the DPS will get, forcing them away from the team (and towards Golgoroth for extra damage). Once the 6 orbs have been dropped or the Gaze holder dies/loses the Gaze, the encounter ends. Rinse and repeat.

Gaze Amaze asks one thing about your team. The current Gaze Holder needs to be within the pool of Light before their partner robs the Gaze from Golgoroth.

What this means is that when someone takes the Gaze, they have a 15-second timer before it disappears. During that time, all of Golgoroth’s attention is on them and he will continuously shoot Taken orbs at them. Usually, you would stay out of sight, counting down the timer until the time when your partner would take from you.

Now, you must venture into the pit with the other Guardians dealing DPS before your timer is up. This will allow your partner to rob the Gaze and continue the cycle.

For this challenge, you need to be quicker on your feet, mindful of your timer and ever ready to get where you need to in a flash. In some ways, it is quite difficult. In others, it’s arguably the easiest challenge in all of King’s Fall.

So, how do you do it?

The Strategy for Gaze Amaze

To complete this challenge, split into Gazers and DPS as usual. If you’re lucky enough to be on the team dealing damage, your jobs are completely the same as usual. Only the Gazers will have any change in cadence or rhythm during this entire encounter so sit back, relax, grab your Linears and remember the Unstable Light.

If you decide to be a Gazer, strap in for a bit of change.

Go through the motions as usual. Kill the adds, spawn heavy ammo and wait for the moment when the orbs begin to spawn. Once the moment arises and everyone gets ready, the Gazers need to get into position. If you’re confident in your ability to move around and get the Gaze before time runs out, the backup Gazer (the one not currently holding Golgoroth’s Gaze) can deal some damage alongside the other team members.

When you know who is going first and who is going second, get ready. There are two main options here.

The first is that the Gazer stands where they would usually stand on the upper levels for the majority of their timer. This keeps them safe, the team safe and essentially allows the encounter to move ahead as per usual. When the timer falls to about 5-7 seconds, dash to the pool and wait to have the Gaze stolen. If done successfully, rinse and repeat until Golgoroth falls.

The second, and perhaps more skilful display, is to stand in the pool alongside the other Guardians. There are pros and cons to this approach: it means the Gazer doesn’t have to worry about missing the pool on the swap-over and lets them deal with a little bit of extra DPS. However, it also puts everyone in danger from the Taken orbs – it would be fine if you were in a Well or maybe even a rift, but the risk is still there. The choice is yours.

At the end of the day, whichever path you choose, if you get through the different phases correctly, keep going. Eventually, Golgoroth will *pop* and rain that sweet extra loot down on you all.

Available Loot

What can Golgoroth give you for your troubles, then? From the bonus challenge chest on Normal difficulty, you can get an extra set of whatever is available during this encounter ordinarily. This includes:

  • Midha’s Reckoning Arc Fusion Rifle
  • Quillim’s Terminus Stasis Machine Gun
  • Legendary Head Armour (War Numen’s Crown/ Darkhollow Mask/ Mouth of Ur)
  • Legendary Leg Armour (War Numen’s Boots/ Darkhollow Treads/ Path of Xol)

On Master Mode, completing the Challenge awards you with the chance for high stat armour (the specific stat is decided based on the week) or one of Harrowed (Adept) weapons. This includes weapons which aren’t usually on this encounter, including the Harrowed Doom of Chelchis Scout Rifle.

That is how to complete the King’s Fall Gaze Amaze Raid Challenge in Destiny 2. This was the 3rd challenge and next week, challenge 4 unlocks for the Daughters of Oryx Encounter. That challenge is called Under Construction.
