How to Complete Destiny 2’s Devious Thievery Raid Challenge

The second King's Fall Raid Challenge in Destiny 2 has arrived. It's called Devious Thievery and has to do with the Warpriest. If you manage to tackle this Challenge you'll get yourself some progress towards the seal as well as bonus loot. Let's see how to complete it.

How to Complete Destiny 2's Devious Thievery Raid ChallengeMaster Mode King’s Fall has bought Raid Challenges to Destiny 2’s King’s Fall. These bonus loops and hurdles will net you some bonus loot and Triumphs if you and your fireteam manage to overcome the odds.

There are 5 Challenges in total for King’s Fall that cycle over 5 weeks. Last week, we took a look at how to complete The Grass is Always Greener Challenge for the Totems (or Basilica) encounter. If you want a rundown on how to complete this challenge, you can check out our previous Raid Challenge guide for more information

This challenge is called Devious Thievery and has to do with the Warpriest encounter.

How Do Raid Challenges Works?

In case you are completely unaware of how Raid Challenges work, here’s a quick rundown.

Once Master Mode has launched for a new Raid, that Raid gets access to Raid challenges. In Normal mode, these can be completed for bonus loot drops from that specific encounter. Meanwhile, in Master Mode, completing these challenges is the way to net yourself Adept Raid loot.

There are an equal number of challenges as an encounter that give loot. For Deep Stone Crypt, for example, there are 4 Challenges. For King’s Fall and Vault of Glass, there are 5.

The Challenges rotate weekly starting with the first encounter and cycling through. After 5 weeks, it will go back to the first encounter Challenge. You will need all Challenges completed for the Raid Seal. You must also complete them on Master Mode, too.

Now that is settled, how do you specifically complete Devious Thievery in King’s Fall?

King’s Fall Raid Challenge 2: Devious Thievery

Destiny 2’s King’s Fall Raid Challenge 2 takes place in the Warpriest encounter. This is also the first boss that players will need to beat to progress through the Raid. It is accessible immediately after the Basilica encounter – you need to stand on 3 plates (one on the left, one in the middle and one on the right) to begin.

Ordinarily, you would deal with the ads that spawn around the room until the Glyph reading sequence begins. The middle plate would be responsible for seeing which side is first in the chain (designated by a glowing statue on the back of the 3 huge plates in the middle of the room). This would chain until all 3 plates have been activated. Then the final player will receive the Brand buff that allows all players to damage the boss.

This Buff has a timer and must be reset in the same way as the Brand buff from the Basilica encounter – kill Taken Knights around the room so they drop the Brand Claimer and steal the buff when time is low. Rinse and repeat this until 2 Knights have been killed, about 40 seconds of damage has passed and 3 cycles of the Brand. Then you hide behind one of the plates and continue doing this dance until Warpriest is dead.

How the Devious Thievery Raid Challenge works is a bit tricky. It uses all the same basic tools and doesn’t even ask you to change up playstyle… much.

Devious Thievery asks that players not hold the Brand Claimer buff for more than 5 seconds.

In essence, this makes the fight a lot more jumpy and mobility centric. The Brand Claimer buff is the one dropped by a Taken Knight upon death and picking it will immediately start a 30-second countdown on that player. Usually, you would wait at the damage zone with this buff until the Brand holder is down to its last few seconds. You’d take the buff here to maximise damage.

Instead, with the challenge, you can only have this Brand Claimer buff for 5 seconds. You cannot just wait around in the DPS bubble because you will run out of time. This also means that the Brand holder may have to do a bit of moving around so that they are close enough that the Claimer can even reach them in 5 seconds (especially with the left side of the room).

So now that we know what we need to do, how do you actually do it?

The Strategy for Devious Thievery

The main strategy here requires a bit more mobility than many will be used to on this encounter. Often, the only players who will be venturing outside of the Brand bubble are those responsible for the Taken Knights and everyone else can remain to plink away at Warpriest’s health.

For this Challenge, the team will instead need to move along with the Brand holder. This is so that the Brand holder can give the Claimer enough time to reach them.

Starting from the top of the encounter, complete the first bit like normal. Same with the Glyph Reading sequence. After this, someone will get the Brand buff and you can begin damage. At the same moment, one of the Taken Knights will spawn in one of the two areas where the Brand did not start (for example, if middle gets the Brand Holder buff, the Knight will either spawn on the left or the right first).

Here’s where things get tricky. The people responsible for the Knights will have to call out where the first Taken Knight is. It is then the job of the Brand Holder to slowly move the team over to that side – once again, if it begins in middle and the Knight is on the right, the Brand Holder must make their way over to the right side. Players can still deal damage while moving or they can remain rooted until the final few seconds, the choice is made per team.

Ominous Approach

Once the Brand Holder is close enough, the player responsible for the Claimer buff should wait until the final few seconds of the Holder’s timer. This will give everyone else enough damage to get Warpriest down quick enough. When the final 7 or so seconds begin to be called out, they will pick up the buff from the Taken Knight. The Claimer now has 5 second to grab that buff from the Holder.

If done successfully, you will need to repeat this procedure with the next Knight in the chain. A new Brand Claimer will be chosen to kill the Knight and the new Holder will have to move the team over to the new position.

If you fail this challenge, it will appear in red in the bottom left hand side of the screen (in the text relay). Keep going until you get it right.

Continue doing this dance while War Priest still lives, making sure to get close before stealing the buff. Do everything well and congratulations, you’ve beaten the Devious Thievery King’s Fall Raid challenge.

New King's Fall Loot

Available Loot

Now that you’ve beaten it, what loot is on offer? In Normal Mode content, the extra chest will contain the same loot that is found in the regular chest (and also will be an additional Pinnacle drop).

These items include:

  • Smite of Merain Kinetic Pulse Rifle
  • Defiance of Yasmin Kinetic Sniper Rifle
  • Legendary Arms Armour (War Numen’s Fist/ Darkhallow Grasps/ Grasp of Eir)
  • Legendary Chest Armour (War Numen’s Chest/ Darkhallow Chiton/ Chasm of Yul)
Harrowed Zaouli's

Harrowed Zaouli’s

If you decide to tackle the Challenge on Master Mode, you can earn yourself any of the available Adept (or Harrowed) versions of the new King’s Fall weapons. This includes variants that do not drop at that specific encounter, such as the Hand Cannon Zaouli’s Bane at Warpriest. These weapons all come with 2 perks in each column. The first is a fixed curated roll while the second is random.

This is how to complete the Devious Thievery challenge in the Destiny 2 King’s Fall Raid. The 3rd challenge will be for Golgoroth and is titled Gaze Amaze.
