Link’s home is often the starting location in most older Zelda games, but newer installments make purchasing a house a side quest objective. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom allows players to buy and customize the layout of their homes. This includes adding stands to display your favorites weapons, galleries for paintings, a bedroom to rest at overnight, a kitchen to cook, and so much more.
There is one side quest that must be completed before you can even purchase a house, but it is relatively simple. The biggest obstacle players face is how to obtain enough rupees to both buy and upgrade their home. There are plenty of ways to make money quickly, and this guide will help you do so.
Here’s everything you’ll need to create the house of your dreams in Zelda TotK:

Finding Tarrey Town
You can buy a house from Hudson Construction in Tarrey Town. Link helped create this town in Breath of the Wild, and it is now a thriving location six years later. Hudson and his wife Rhondson have created a business that constructs buildings across all of Hyrule. Tarrey Town is located in the north-east corner of the world. This section of the map is known as the Akkala Region.
There is only a single road that goes from Central Hyrule to the Akkala region. The first road split is at the Akkala Citadel Ruins. Taking the right path twice will take you to Tarrey Town the fastest, and this route will also take you past the Rasitakiwak Shrine. This shrine is important since it’s not only the closest shrine that offers fast travel to Tarrey Town, but also because it sits directly next to the pot of land you can buy.
While that path is the best to you, the other paths aren’t bad either since they can bring you to the South Akkala Stable and Hudson Construction Sites respectively. Head east along the road from either of those locations to reach Tarrey Town. The construction site actually has a lift that can take you directly over Lake Akkala to Tarrey Town, but you’ll need to repair it first.
Mattison’s Independence Side Quest
Link helped Hudson and Rhondson get married in BotW, and now must help their daughter reach Gerudof Town. Speak with the family to learn about their situation. You will then receive a side quest called Mattison’s Independence. Follow Mattison to an elderly couple. You will be asked what the Gerudo word for a grandma is. Select the Vaba option.
Mattison will then ask you to help her sneak past Hagie. This is because she wants to ride the railcar to see her father. Place a piece of wood in front of Hagie via the Ultra hand ability, but be careful not to be seen in the process. Afterwards, follow Mattison down to Hudson. Hudson will ask you to give him 10 Sundelions. These are a type of flower that typically grow on Sky Islands and locations related to Sonia. The side adventure will be complete after you give them the flowers. Hudson will reward you with 2 Silver Rupees for helping his family. Silver Rupees are worth 100 regular Rupees each, so you gain 200 Rupees from this quest line. This is very helpful when it comes to purchasing a house.
Buying A Plot of Land: Home on Arrange Side Quest
Rhondson will offer you a plot of land after you complete the Mattison’s Independence side quest. Originally the land cost 3,000 Rupees, but she gives you a half off discount since you helped her daughter. The 200 Rupees you gained from Mattison’s Independence reduces the amount of Rupees you’ll need to grind from 1,500 to 1,300. Pay Rhondson the amount missing, and then head over to Granteson near the Rasitakiwak Shrine to find the plot of land you just purchased.
Granteson will allow you to place your starting rooms in any position you want them to be in. The house is quite small to start, but can be greatly enhanced via buying new rooms. Drag the rooms you currently have around with the Ultra Hand ability. Press A when the rooms are near each other to attach them. Make sure your construction is within the roped area, because anything outside the ropes will go into Granteson’s storage. Talk to Granteson and select the “I’m done” option to complete your first house. Talking to him again at the desk will let you customize the house again.
How to Make Money Quick
One of the easiest money making methods is to cook meals. The area around the Sonapon Shrine near Satori Mountain is a wonderful location to look for ingredients. You can find nearly 100 apples directly next to the shrine, multiple animals downhill, and a variety of plants around the mountain. When it comes to the animals, you should try sniping them with arrows in bullet time. You can easily take out two cows and a few birds in one swoop. Cooked meat sells very well consistently in TotK.
Apples sell a little worse, but the sheer amount for them makes up for this. Collecting that many apples off trees would normally be very time consuming, yet it’s actually quite simple thanks to an Autobuild trick. Collect roughly 15 apples, and then drop them on the ground. Fuse all those apples together using Ultra Hand, and then save the fusion as one of your favorites in the Autobuild menu. Selecting this Autobuild will grab apples from trees and attach them in front of you in a blink of an eye. Repeat this a few times, and you’ll have nearly 100 apples in no time. You can use this guide if you’re unsure how to cook in Zelda TotK.
Upgrading The House
Talking to Granteson near your house will allow you to make modifications. Telling him you need more rooms to open a list of available options. Most rooms cost around 400 Rupees, although a few can vary from 250 to 600. Your home can have up to 15 rooms at a time. This is just enough to have one of every type of room, but you can choose to have multiple rooms of a specific type rather than using all the options. Once you’ve attached new rooms, simply tell Granteson you’re done. He’ll collect all rooms outside of the rope to place in storage before finalizing your construction.
How to Add Makeshift Windows
It is impossible to add windows to rooms, however, there is a way to make something that vaguely resembles a window. The paddock is a room where you can keep one of your many horses. It was intended to be placed on the side of your house, but can work as an interior room. This is the only way to have a window like opening in your house. You can buy more than one paddock, but there is a limit to the amount you can use.
Having a horse within the paddock isn’t required, but they can be fun ways to keep your pet horse indoors. Any horse you have at stables can be placed in paddocks, and it’s easy to take the horse back out by merely interacting with it. The only other form of house pet you can have is a fish via the pond.
Creating The Perfect Gallery
Galleries are a type of room that allow players to display paintings in them. You can have three galleries total, and can select a picture from your camera gallery to turn into a painting. Anything you take a picture of with the in game camera can be turned into a painting. This includes but is not limited to; your favorite NPC, a waterfall, the final boss, the Blood moon, and even other paintings. You can even transport the Champion picture from the house Link could buy in BotW to your new house. Galleries add just as much customization to the game as arranging the rooms themselves do, so take your time finding a picture that matches the atmosphere you’re looking for.
Making Your Home Feel Unique
Link’s House can come in many shapes and sizes depending on the player’s sense of creativity. There’s no right or wrong way to make your house, but there are methods to make it stand out. Some players have designed their house to be in the shape of rupees and words. Others have used rotated outside stairs to lift their house off the ground. Keep in mind having the entrance on ground level is entirely optional, and so is having rooms rotated the intended way. Mix, match, and rotate rooms any way you see fit. Weapon, shield, and weapon stands can also be customized with any gear you choose. Even fused weapons can be put on display.
