Critter Pick is one of the main events of Honkai: Star Rail Version 1.6 and it’s an enjoyable event unlike anything we’ve done so far. In it, under Ruan Mei’s distant and nebulous teachings, you must use the mysterious Lifeform Oven to nurture, cultivate and mutate various strange beings called Critters, all of whom resemble weird glob-like cats and some of which resemble familiar faces from across the galaxy. By splicing together different sets of genes and characteristics, you aim to grow a full list of Critters with Special Mutations, the kind of mutation that makes a Critter look like Blade, March 7th or even Ruan Mei herself. There are 9 of these Special Mutations… well, nine that you can create.
There is, in fact, a tenth Special Mutation available to collect called the Pure Sugar Child, a ridiculously cute Critter based on everyone’s favourite Belobogian, Clara. However, unlike all of the other Critters from the event, you won’t be able to get the Clara Critter from mixing recipes in the Lifeform Oven: instead, you need to find and rescue it from somewhere in the Seclusion Zone. Only then will you be able to create the Pure Sugar Child army of your dreams.
Here’s how to unlock the tenth Critter with a Special Mutation, the Pure Sugar Child based on Clara, in the new Critter Pick event in Honkai: Star Rail.

How to Unlock the Clara Critter in Honkai Star Rail
Unlike the other nine Critters in the Critter Pick event, the Clara Critter isn’t created using the Lifeform Oven. Instead, you’ll need to find and rescue it from a dastardly enemy inside the Seclusion Zone.
In the Seclusion Zone near where the Lifeform Oven is located, you can find two of Ruan Mei’s creations having a heated discussion. If these creations aren’t there for you, try progressing the Critter Pick questline until you reach the Detective Peppy Interlude, at which point the whispering creations should appear to the left of the helper robot involved in the Interlude.
During their conversation, they mention a strange rumour regarding a monster who has apparently swallowed a little girl, with her screams echoing throughout the whole Seclusion Zone. As part of that conversation, they’ll also mention that the screams seem to come from the tram station on the opposite side of the area.
If you follow their directions and head to the southern tram station (which is close to the Pharmaceutical Room Teleport Point), you’ll soon stumble across a large Juvenile Sting beetle. This enemy isn’t too tough and has the same Weaknesses as an ordinary Juvenile Sting – Imaginary and Quantum DMG – so, once you’re ready, engage it in combat,

Defeating this agent of the Swarm will reveal that the creation’s rumour was actually true… well, true to some extent. Once the beetle has been defeated, another one of Ruan Mei’s creations will pop out and begin having a conversation with you. The depressingly named Pitiable Creation will express their thanks, upon which point you will offer them a safe spot in your Critter collection.
This will cause you to gain one Pure Sugar Child, the cute Critter based entirely on Clara right down to the woolly red shell, large child-like eyes and even a brown belt around its tail. For finding it, you’ll obtain +20 to your Research Level for a new Mutant Trait as well as an additional +10 for a new Base Trait.
Despite not coming from the Lifeform Oven, the Pure Sugar Child does count towards the Index Expansion Limited-Time Reward for the Critter Pick event, allowing you to snag some Stellar Jade a bit early. Additionally, Clara’s Critter is a required part of two different Achievements. The first, The God of Small Things, will award you 5 Jade for collecting all Creation Traits (which includes the two unique Traits from the Pure Sugar Child) whereas the second, The Cat in the Hat, will award you a further 5 Jade for rescuing both the Pure Sugar Child and the Bossy Coconut Angelcake.

With the Clara Critter saved from the jaws of the Swarm in HSR, you’ll able to create more copies of it at the Lifeform Oven. If you want to make more Pure Sugar Child Critters, you’ll need the following Traits:
- Grey Skin
- Pink Filling
- The complete coverage White Pattern
The hardest material to obtain here is the White Pattern which completely covers the Critter, which is the same pattern used to create the Kafka Critter, the Shader Cat. To obtain it, you’ll likely have to reach the final stage of the Critter Pick event which involves completing all of the previous Critter Pick quests – including the entire Detective Peppy Interlude – and creating all six previous Special Mutations.
Pure Sugar Child Nurture Recipe
As for what synthesis material the Ice Sugar Child needs for its Special Mutation, it needs Protein Rice. This synthesis material can be found by destroying objects on the Herta Space Station, by defeating Voidranger Reavers or other Annihilation-type enemies or from the Grocery Store in Central Starskiff Haven. You’ll need one Protein Rice each time you want to create a new Clara Critter in Honkai Star Rail so come prepared.
Like all other Special Mutations, there is some secret dialogue available if you create three Pure Sugar Child Critters and then accommodate them in the same space. When all three are together, you can interact with them and get the line, “Have you guys seen a tall robot around here?” This is an obvious reference to Clara’s best friend and counter-attacking machine, Svarog.

After Version 1.6, the Critter Pick event will be moved to the Conventional Memoir along with all of its limited-time rewards, so be sure to collect all the Critters you can before then.
