Elemental Reactions
Genshin Impact Elemental Reactions
Your team composition should primarily revolve around this mechanic: Elemental Reactions. Each character in Genshin Impact has their own element which can range from Cryo (Ice) to Geo (Earth). The list of elements currently in the game are as follows:
- Cryo (Ice)
- Pyro (Fire)
- Electro (Electric)
- Hydro (Water)
- Geo (Earth)
- Anemo (Air)
- Dendro (Nature/Wood?) – This one is kind of unclear as there’s no playable character yet that uses Dendro.
Elemental Reactions happen when two elements interact with each other producing an effect. You’ll want to take advantage of this mechanic as most of the combat revolves around it. The mobs around will also have their own element, so knowing which ones interact with each other will definitely put you in the lead!
Elemental Resonance

Elemental Resonance is a passive, meaning it’s constantly there. Unfortunately, I can’t find a chart that illustrates elemental resonance, so I’ll leave you this page from Genshin.gg that talks about Elemental Resonance and Reactions much deeper. It’s got the numbers and stuff if you’re into that thing. Most likely, you’ll want to take advantage of this resonance by having two dudes who have the same elements in a team. But having no matching elements in a team also has its resonance. It all depends on how you want to play the game!
Character Roles
You’re damn right there’s going to be a Fischl in this article.
In typical RPG fashion, each character in Genshin Impact has their own roles that they excel in. As of now, there are four of them:
- DPS (Diluc, Xiangling, Fischl)
- Enabler (Lisa, Fischl)
- Support (Noelle, Venti, Jean)
- Healer (QiQi, Barbara, Jean)
Yup, support and healer are two different things in this game. Sure, a healer can still support and vice versa if the support has a healing skill but it’s much better for a single character to focus on something other than being a jack of all trades. Sure, the actual saying for “jack of all trades” makes them better than “Master of one”, but come on, man.
Anyway, just to explain a little about the roles. The DPS will usually be out much more frequently than the others, the DPS deals all the damage and the reactions. The Enabler, on the other hand, is the one that makes all the reactions possible. They apply status elements to the mobs for the DPS to proc their reactions. While weak on their own, a party with an enabler is hell for the mobs crossing their path. Support handles all the utility in the team. They have skills that attract the attention of the mobs or just straight up gather them in one place. There are other characters too that provide shield for your party. Usually Geo and Anemo excel in this. Healers well… heal. I mean, what else can I say?
You might’ve noticed that I put examples of what characters can fit in that role and see that Fischl and Jean has appeared twice, so does that mean you can have them do two roles at once? Nope! Circling back to the jack of all trades thing, it’s much better for a character to focus on one role for the team. With that being said, a character can be built in a variety of ways. Go wild!
Team Examples
Venti, best boy.
In this section, I’m going to go over my previous and current team in Genshin Impact and why I built them that way.
Previous Team
- Xiangling (Pyro) – Enabler
- Fischl (Electro) – Physical DPS
- Lisa (Electro) – Support
- QiQi (Cryo) – Healer
- Main Reaction: Overloaded (Deals AoE Pyro DMG.)
- Secondary Reaction: Superconduct (Deals AoE Cryo DMG and reduces the target’s Physical RES by 50%.)
- Elemental Resonance: Electro (Affected by Hydro for 40% less time. Superconduct, Overloaded, and Electro-Charged have a 100% chance to generate an Electro Elemental Particle with a cooldown of 5 seconds)
This team has one main reaction I’m always trying to go for, which is Overloaded. It happens when Electro and Pyro meet. What I usually do is heat them up using Xiangling, then switch to Lisa for her AoE skill. I can also put her ultimate down for a constant electro status element on the mobs, same with Xiangling. When both their skills are down (usually Lisa’s), I put Fischl out to dish out some physical damage. I also have the option to put Fischl’s raven, Oz, down to help with the reactions as he deals electro damage. QiQi just comes out to play when I need to heal my party. Don’t be deceived by her appearance though, her heal scales with her attack so she can dish out freezing hell all on her own, too! Not to mention, my Elemental Resonance enhances Overloaded and Superconduct, plus gives me Elemental Particles to charge my ultimates quickly!
Jean and the gang
Current Team
- Xiangling (Pyro) – Enabler
- Fischl (Electro) – Physical DPS
- Venti (Anemo) – Support/Secondary DPS
- QiQi (Cryo) – Healer
- Main Reaction: Swirl into anything, man.
- Secondary Reaction: Overload, Superconduct
- Elemental Resonance: None (All Elemental RES by 15%.)
The only change in this team is Venti in and Lisa out. After rolling for Venti for 3 days, I finally got him. The main reaction for this one is a little different. Most of the people consider swirl as a secondary reaction, but Venti is on a whole other level. His ultimate gathers the mobs in one place and absorbs the first element it comes into contact with and swirls them inside. It’s basically like a blackhole that deals damage over time and swirls the element that is absorbed. Not only that, while the ult is still ongoing, you can switch out to another character and hit them with another element to produce more reactions! It’s insane! His ultimate also recharges quickly because of all the reactions that happened inside his ult.
What I usually do is burn people with Xiangling’s skill, then switch to Venti to ultimate, switch to Fischl to dish out some damage, and put Oz down for the electro element. Which would create overloaded explosions in Venti’s ultimate.
