In Final Fantasy XIV, gil is the in-game currency that is most sought after. Every server and data center is different, so what might work for someone on one server, may be terrible for your sever. With this in mind, this list aims to cover ten ways to obtain it through legitimate means in game. From selling items on the market board to being traded gil for hard work, this list contains a bit of everything. Please keep in mind that gil is capped at 999,999,999 for the player and each of their retainers. Meanwhile, free trial players are capped at 300,000.

Crafting and Gathering
Crafting and gathering is one of the easiest and best ways to actually make gil. If you speak to someone who has a lot of gil, this is most likely the response you’ll get if you ask how they got so much. They’re right as it does make a lot of gil in the long run. Usually, during significate patches, new stuff is added to craft and gather. From minions to gear, there’s plenty to be made if you take the time to do it. For example, when a new savage tier becomes available, the newest crafted set usually sell for a lot of gil and very quickly. Of course, if you don’t want to craft, you can gather the materials to make the gear and sell that instead. While you would usually make less than if you made the gear itself, it’ll still be a good sum.
Treasure Maps
With each new expansion, new treasure map types can be obtained. If you can get a full party or close to, you can open the bottle for some coordinates to a hidden treasure coffer. These coffers have a chance to contain a portal that has greater riches. Whether it’s mounts, minions, or orchestrion rolls; the items they contain will certainly be sought after and usually go for high prices amongst the player base. Not only that, but you’ll get gil just from being part of the party if you decide to try them.
Merc Runs
A merc run is usually an ad in party finder that involves a player running content with a party for gil. Usually, this will be for a mount, a clear, or running until the timer hits 0. In the end, when the player gets what they want, they will pay all the players who participated in helping them. If you decided to take on merc runs, you can usually play as whatever class you want while grinding for other objects you may want. An example is if a player wants a mount, you can instead help them farm it and get items for glamour, crafting materials, or totems while making gil in the process.
Roulettes
The simplest and easiest way to get some extra gil is to do your daily roulettes. Keep an eye on the adventure in need column because if you go in as that role, you’ll be given extra exp, tomes, and gil. With that in mind, you’ll be able to level up some other classes while gaining funds to buy what you’re after. Overall, it’s the most well-rounded way to get a little bit of everything in game while focusing on your battle classes.
Levequests
Levequests are often gone to waste because once you have everything leveled, they’re not given much attention. However, they can be an amazing source of gil. Every 12 hours, you’re given 3 levequests to a maximum of 100. Once you’re capped, any more leve allowances are lost. Each major city after A Realm Reborn has leves that players can accept. Each leve grants a good sum of gil and experience. Unlike regular quests that can only be completed once per character, they’re repeatable as long as your allowance isn’t 0. In Dawntrail the main city is Tullyolal, so that’s where the levequests are. You can accept them by talking to Malinali at the coordinates (13.7, 12.7). Keep an eye out for ones that are easy to do and give the most amount of gil. If you’re crafting, be sure to turn in high quality items, so your gil is doubled.
Gardening
While gardening does take the longest time to start making gil, it’s one of the least involved processes. An example of one of the best ways to make gil is from growing Thavnairian Onions. These onions are needed to level up players companions past 10 and up to the maximum level, 20. Overall, these onions take 10 real world days to grow, and you have to cross bread them from other seeds. Of course, there are other crops that can be grown in shorter times that players buy frequently. Just make sure to check what crops sell well on your sever. Other than planting and watering the crops once a day, there’s nothing else for you to do except wait. This will free up some time for you to farm gil in other ways.
Airships and Submersibles
If you have a Free Company house, it’s worth looking into running airships and submarines. Every few days they bring back goodies such as minions and mounts that can easily be sold on the market board. With that said, sometimes it’s the only way to get these mounts and minions meaning they tend to sell for a lot. This is another great passive way to farm gil because you can fuel them with ceruleum tanks that are bought with company credits. These credits are obtained by FC members doing basic things like roulettes. However, they will need repaired from time to time. This can be done with magitek repair materials which are crafted. As a bonus, it’s easy to craft them. They take dark matter clusters, grade 6 dark matter, and a few crystals from your chosen crafter. You’ll have them sent off in no time.
The Free Company Workshop
Other than airships and submersibles, the workshop offers a huge advantage to making gil. Using the schematic board, you can craft a ton of items and sell them for a hefty amount of gil. From aetherial wheel stands to full estate items, it’s certainly worth looking into. Aetherial wheel stands are used to prime free company buffs, not only that, but the wheels that need primed can also be sold. They’re usually easy to craft, but not everyone wants to craft them. Thus, selling them makes it easy to get gil. Plus, in the workshop, if you’re able to start a new project for an estate, they tend to sell for a lot, especially the newer ones. This is a more active way to earn gil as it does require you to gather most of the materials yourself, but will provide a good payout in the long run.
The Challenge Log
Alternatively, players might also fill out their challenge log to get various rewards like gil. This is unlocked by speaking to I’tolwann in Limsa Lominsa with the quest “Rising to the Challenge.” While not all of these will provide gil, most do. From 1,000 up to 15,000 gil per completion, the log resets weekly each Tuesday so it’s easily repeatable. While the challenges aren’t particularly hard, some are supposed to take the week to complete. From the simple “give 5 player commendations” to the more time consuming “complete 20 levequests”. The challenges are meant to be taken on passively. It’s normally meant to be another way to earn gil while playing Final Fantasy XIV as you normally would. Though, it’s certainly giving it a peek and aiming to finish some before they reset.
Retainers and the Market Board
Finally, the next way to make gil is probably one of the best. Selling things on the market board is always a great way to make gil. However, you should take note of what sells well on your data center and server. These items are sure to sell quickly and give you the in-game currency you want. Sending out retainers to get materials to sell is pretty common, though it’s possible to get new minions from the 18 hour ventures. Retainers are the only way to sell items on the market board. Thankfully, you can have two for free and up to eight can be bought for an additional fee. While you don’t need to spend the extra money to earn a lot of gil, it would be easier to gather materials more quickly to sell. None the less, it’ll help provide a good sum of gil.
