Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail | How to Get the Free Fantasia Guide (Bottled Fantasy Quest)

Alongside a colourful new region to explore in Tural, two new DPS classes to play with Pictomancer and Viper, and a new batch of Main Scenario Quests to conquer, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail has also heralded the arrival of the long-awaited graphical overhaul to Final Fantasy XIV. With substantial updates to lighting and textures, the decade-old MMORPG has been completely transformed. The lands and people of Eorzea look better than ever but some may find themselves a bit perturbed by their shiny new Warriors of Light. 

Fortunately, Dawntrail has also introduced the ability for all players to earn a free Phial of Fantasia early in the game. You can use Fantasias to change your current character’s appearance, allowing you to alter everything from your face shape to even your race. These fabled items are exceedingly rare (if you aren’t willing to shell out real money for them, anyway) but we now have a new, definitive way of getting one.

How to Obtain the Free Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

Bottled Fantasy Quest Location

To obtain the free Dawntrail Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV, you need to complete the quest Bottled Fantasy. This Level 1 quest can be found in the city of Ul’dah at (X. 13.4 Y. 9.3). There, you’ll find a humble, and slightly suspicious, Medicine Merchant. Bottled Fantasy is a Featured Quest, so keep an eye out for the blue quest marker on the map for easier guidance. 

Fortunately, you don’t need to own Dawntrail to unlock the Fantasia. Yoshi P himself claimed that the graphical update is the main culprit for the free Fantasia, as the updated graphics may leave some unhappy with their newly updated Warriors of Light. As such, no matter if you’re an up-to-date Godslayer or a brand new sprout taking their first steps into Eorzea, you can grab an early Fantasia for yourself.

This quest is really simple, intended as a proper introduction to the Fantasia system and how it works, something FF14 was lacking before Dawntrail. In it, you’ll watch a tiny little Lalafel transform into a bulky Hyur in just a few moments. In the end, the suspicious Fantasia salesman will give you your own Phial of Fantasia as thanks for your service.

How to Get More Fantasias

Aside from Bottled Fantasy, there are only two other methods of acquiring Phials of Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV.

• Complete the A Realm Reborn Main Scenario Quest (Quest: The Ultimate Weapon)
• Buy them from the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store

The first method is to simply complete the quest The Ultimate Weapon, the final quest in the A Realm Reborn Main Scenario Quest. Aside from Bottled Fantasy, this is, currently, the only other way to obtain a Phial of Fantasia for free in Final Fantasy XIV.

Meanwhile, if you’re willing to splash a bit of real-world cash to change your appearance, you can buy as many Phials of Fantasia from the Mog Station, Final Fantasy XIV’s Online Store. You can buy up to five Phials at once, with each Fantasia costing roughly $7.99.

How to Use a Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV

Now that you have a Phial of Fantasia in your possession, you can go about the process of actually using it. Using a Fantasia in Final Fantasy 14 is a rather involved process, so follow the steps below to go through with your transformation. 

1. Find the Phial of Fantasia in your inventory. 
2. Go to a nearby inn room in a city of your choice.
3. Unequip all of your items, armour, and accessories. 
4. Sleep in your inn room’s bed and log out of the game.
5. Once you go to log back in, it should ask if you want to edit your character’s appearance.

Go through with any alterations and, when you’re finished, you will pop back into your inn room as a brand new Warrior of Light.

One big thing about Fantasias is that, despite being one-time-use items, you don’t have to confirm your choices right away. Once you consume a Fantasia and log out, the option to edit your character will remain until you go through with the make-over process, giving you plenty of time to decide on what you want. 

Additionally, the main use of Phials of Fantasia is to change your character from one race to another, such as going from a Mi’qote to a Lalafell, but they are also the only way to alter other parts of your WoL. While the Aesthetician can change your hair, tattoos, and even face markings, there are several things out of their control: if you feel a burning desire to change your character’s eye shape, eye colour, tail size, face shape, or any number of other features, you’ll need to pop open a Fantasia to do so.
