Cait Sith is one of the more intriguing characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the hit sequel to 2020’s blockbuster RPG Final Fantasy VII Remake. Not only is he an animatronic cat, but he can also call for his stocky Moogle ally to help him out during combat, temporarily use the ability of the summon materia he has equipped, and most importantly, has abilities based purely on chance. Lucky for us, there is a luck stat in this game, which quickly becomes apparent when using Cait Sith. Even luckier, there exists Luck Up Materia, and it can be purchased from nearly any Materia store for just a few thousand gil! This guide will show you the ultimate Cait Sith luck build, which revolves around maximizing his luck-based attacks.
Here’s a quick summary of how the Cait Sith luck build will work:
- The goal is to get your luck stat to as close to 500 as possible. This will maximize your chances of landing a critical hit when using attacks with Cait Sith and other characters.
- Furthermore, two of Cait Sith’s main attacks – Roll O’ The Dice and Fortune Teller – are based on your luck statistic, so the higher it is, the better these moves become.
- The Roll O’ The Dice move, which is extremely spammable in nature, can not only be an attack, but it can grant buffs to your party while Fortune Teller is an attack that hits for a random number. However, the higher your luck, the higher the chances that this number will be enough to significantly damage your opponent.
- Using Cait Sith’s own unlockable skill tree (Lucky Jockey gives Cait Sith a +100 luck boost when he’s riding his Moogle) and the Luck Up Materia, we can boost our luck stat as much as possible.

How Luck Works
Luck, in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, mainly does two things: increases your chances of getting favorable RNG when using movees that require randomization and increases your chances of getting critical hits. For each 5 points of luck that a character has, it raises their chances of getting a critical hit by 1%. So if you can find a way to get a character to have over 500 luck, all of their attacks will be critical hits! However, this is quite difficult, but we can get our luck up over 350, sometimes close to 400 with Cait Sith. The luck stat affecting critical hit rate doesn’t just apply to Cait Sith either, it applies to every character. To take full advantage of this, we’ll need to obtain, equip, and grind up some Luck Up materia.
Luck Up Materia
It appears that our fortunes are already high as the Luck Up Materia can be purchased from nearly any materia shop for just a few thousand gil from Chapter 4 and onwards. A maxed out Luck Up Materia will boost your character’s luck by 50%, so two of them will double up their luck. Furthermore, when Cait Sith joins your party, he already comes pre-equipped with an orb of Luck Up Materia!
The Attacks
Roll O’ The Dice Attack
This is my personal favorite luck-based move with Cait Sith. Though you don’t have to be riding the Moogle when using this move, it’s recommended as Cait Sith’s skill tree has abilities that pump up his luck while on his Moogle. This move works by Cait Sith busting a dice and rolling it, giving you a specific outcome for each numbered side. The attacks are as follows:
- If the number rolled is 1, then both fire and thunder get cast on all enemies.
- If the number rolled is 2, then Cait Sith uses a beam attack against an enemy.
- If the number rolled is 3, then both aero and blizzard get cast on all enemies.
- If the number rolled is 4, then Cait Sith enters a mode where he deals more damage to enemies but is also dealt more damage in return.
- If the number rolled is 5, then a pumped-up version of Regen gets cast on Cait Sith.
- If the number rolled is 6, then barrier gets cast on Cait Sith and his defense gets temporarily raised.
The crucial thing to remember here is that Roll O’ The Dice only costs one ATB meter to activate, meaning it’s extremely spammable. In fact, my usual strategy is entirely based around using Roll O’ The Dice as many times as possible and as quickly as possible. A video of Cait Sith spamming Roll O’ The Dice is shown below.
Fortune Teller Attack
This one’s pretty straightforward. The Fortune Teller attack is purely based on RNG, quite literally. It works by assigning damage randomly, so you could get 1, 9,999, or anything in between. It’s completely random! However, since we’re going to be pumping Cait Sith’s luck stat as much as possible, the numbers tend to consistently be quite high. In this way, the luck statistics can almost be viewed the same as the strength stat for Cait Sith, so don’t forget this move when you need to deal large amounts of damage rather quickly!
The Cait Sith Luck Build Setup
To maximize the Cait Sith luck build, I highly recommend incorporating the following orbs in your materia setup:
- Luck Up Materia x2
- First Strike Materia
- ATB Assist Materia
- ATB Boost
- Materia Magic Up Materia
- Skill Master Materia
A couple of tips to remember when playing as Cait Sith:
- Cait Sith’s Moogle not only raises his luck by 100 when he’s riding it if you unlock the Lucky Jockey node from the bookstore, he acts as a fourth party member. I recommend before doing anything else with Cait Sith, summon his Moogle friend.
- The First Strike and ATB Boost orbs are self-explanatory, but the ATB Assist Materia will pump up your teammate’s ATB meters every time Cait Sith drops a dice roll while the Skill Master Materia will boost Cait Sith’s own ATB when you use Roll O’ The Dice three times in a row.
- Getting Cait Sith three ATB bars would be great, so try to use the United Refocus synergy ability as quickly as you can.
- The Magic Up Materia will boost Cait Sith’s dice attack when you roll a 1 or 2 and it will also boost the effects of 5 and 6.
- Having a party member cast Haste on Cait Sith would boost the number of dice rolls he can crank out!
- There is an accessory called Lucky Amulet that will raise the luck of whoever it is equipped to by 10 points.
