Destiny 2: Lightfall | Root of Nightmares Secret Chest Locations

Destiny 2: Lightfall has just launched its brand new Raid, Root of Nightmares, where players will try to put an end to one of the Witness’ most devious Disciples: Nezarec, the Final God of Pain. That isn’t all to the Raid, though, as it comes with a bevvy of new loot, gear, triumphs, collectables and more. One thing that Guardians will surely be interested in is the locations of the RoN secret chests.

Just like all previous Raids, Root of Nightmares houses two secret bonus chests that will award curious players with some extra rewards. These chests can be tricky to find, though, and you may need some guidance on where to look.

Here’s where to find both of the secret chests in the Root of Nightmares Raid in Destiny 2: Lightfall

Secret Chest 1

The first secret chest can be found between the first encounter (Cataclysm) and the second encounter (Scission).

As you make your way up to the second encounter, you will traverse through various broken buildings and areas tainted by the bioluminescent vines covering the Pyramid Ship. Continue on the golden path until right near the end of the jumping puzzle.

A long series of vines will reach upwards and allow you to hop off to go to the encounter. Instead of going that way, though, turn your attention to the other side of the gorge. You should be able to make out a few openings and doorways in the side of the cliff which you can get to using some skilful jumping (or a Strand Grapple).

Once you’ve made it over there, it won’t be long until you come face to face with a Tormentor and its minions. This mini-boss is defending its hoard and you’ll have to kill it if you want to get your hands on that bonus loot.

After you dispatch the Tormentor, walk up to a familiar-looking statue and pick up your first secret chest.

Secret Chest 2

The second secret chest in Root of Nightmares can be found after the second encounter.

As you near the third encounter you will be asked to cross a massive part of the Raid called the Chasm where you will use Darkness Refuge to protect yourself from Nezarec’s overwhelming influence. This is a pretty long section with many moving parts so keep moving through this section as fast as you can.

Eventually, you will reach a locked door that your entire team must reach before you can continue. This door then opens onto a wide building covered in stairs – this is where you’ll want to be for the chest. Ascend to the top and then wander over to the right side of the building (you should be able to see the massive Darkness structure off in the distance. If you look over the ledge at the correct location you should be able to spy a Darkness Splinter resting on a platform below.

Shooting this Splinter will open a locked door to a building at the top of the many flights of stairs (directly above where you enter this area). Simply walk on over and you’ll have earned yourself a second secret chest.

Bonus Chest Loot

So, what will you get for your troubles? These secret chests carry the hallmarks of their forefathers and share a lot of similarities to the secret chests in other Raids and Dungeons.

Firstly, they will only contain loot you have previously acquired from main encounter chests. If you’ve only received the Shotgun or the Arms before opening a chest, you can only get one of those two items. However, not all hope is lost as you will always get an exclusive Root of Nightmares Raid Mod which can be used on RoN armour to enhance your effectiveness in the Raid.

The other thing to note is that the secret chests can only be opened once per week per character. This gives you six secret chests to open per week (should you have three different characters, of course) and no more.

The main things that you’ll want to be wishing for from these chests are going to be Deepsight drops of the Root of Nightmare weapons. The bonus chests do have the chance to drop these weapons with a Red Border, so cross your fingers and hope one (or more) come your way.
