Black Myth: Wukong | How to Unlock the Ruyi Scroll Secret Area (Chen Loong Quest)As you explore the beautiful vistas of Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll regularly come across non-hostile and hostile NPCs alike, many of which have their own intricate questlines in which you can take part. Whether it is the game-spanning hunt to find the Horse Guai in each of Wukong’s main areas or the more self-contained quests which unlock new vendors or merchants, there are plenty of people to help – or hunt – as the Destined One. One of the most valuable NPC questlines and one all players should do is Chen Loong’s quest.

Chen Loong is an interesting NPC you’ll encounter in The New West, the third major area in Black Myth. While hostile at first, progressing Chen Loong’s questline will eventually unlock the Ruyi Scroll, a secret main hub area which will give you more direct access to important vendors and merchants such as Shen Monkey and Xu Dog. Getting your hands on the Ruyi Scroll will save a ton of time in the later portions of the game.

Where to Find Chen Loong in The New West

Chen Loong is an NPC who you can find in The New West. You’ll find him in the Biter Lake sub-area, which you unlock after finding Zhu Bajie. Starting at the North Shore of Bitter Lake Keeper’s Shrine, turn around and head back towards Turtle Island.

The body of the giant turtle ends at the end of the shoreline and, if you turn to the right, you’ll find an odd fellow hanging about in the frosty waters of the lake. This is Chen Loong, an ancient dragon and your key to the Ruyi Scroll secret area. Be warned, though, as Chen Loong will immediately attack you when you draw near.

Chen Loong Boss Fight

In combat, Chen Loong predominately uses lightning attacks which afflict you with Shock. Most of his attacks are long-ranged, so try and stay close to him, at least at first. Once Chen Loong hits 75% of his health, he’ll be empowered by lightning, greatly increasing his attack power and giving him a variety of new moves. He will leave this state once he hits 25% of his health but he will reenter it if you do not finish the fight fast enough.

One of Chen Loong’s deadliest attacks has him summon a massive electrified dragon tail from the water which will sweep around in an arc in front of it. As the fight progresses, Chen Loong will eventually summon six of these tails at any one time, leaving you very little space to avoid his attacks unless you Perfect Dodge or reach maximum charge with the Pillar Stance.

Interestingly, if you’re still accompanied by Bajie, he’ll join you in battle and aid you in your fight against Chen Loong. Aside from that, we advise overwhelming Chen Loong with Pluck of Many while also exploiting Immobilize; compared to most other bosses in Black Myth: Wukong, Chen Loong has a very low health pool, making him a relatively easy fight if you can get passed the surge of lightning he throws at you. Additionally, we recommend popping your Transformation Spell whenever Chen Loong begins his long lightning combo as it will let you avoid most of his worst attacks for free.

Get the Medicine Pellet from Xu Dog

Once you best Chen Loong in combat, he’ll begin to lament by the side of the lake you fought him in. Speaking to the dragon reveals that he is weak and that only a Revival Pill from the famed Xu Dog will be able to rouse his spirit. Xu Dog is one of the zodiac and, if you thoroughly explored the Yellow Wind Ridge in Chapter 2, you’ve likely already stumbled across him.

Xu Dog is a furry medicine merchant who you first encounter outside of the Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw boss arena in the very first area of Chapter 2. He’ll be hiding behind a rock and ask you to give him a specific kind of ingredient, one that’s relatively easy to come by. Doing this will cause Xu Dog to disappear and pop back up later in the level. To be specific, he’ll appear next to the Cellar Keeper’s Shrine, which you can unlock by using the Sterness of Stone at the statue where you fought the Tiger Vanguard.

Usually, Xu Dog is the vendor you visit to craft new Celestial Medicines to increase your Health, Magic, Stamina, Defence, and more. However, visiting Xu Dog after talking to Chen Loong will allow you to progress in the dragon’s quest. Talk to Xu Dog and he’ll give a small anecdote about his friend before gifting you the Special-Made Bone-Strengthening Pellet.

Return to Chen Loong

With the Special-Made Bone-Strengthening Pellet in hand, return to The New West and Chen Loong. Instead of standing on top of the lake, the dragon will have moved to the frosty shoreline.

Speaking to Chen Loong will allow you to deliver the pellet to him, causing a great change in the dragon’s demeanour. He’ll welcome you with open arms and tell you that, now that he has a monkey, he can finally complete a realm he and his friends had dreaming. Chen Loong will then give you a strange scroll before disappearing.

At this point, the magic scroll will suck in the Destined One, unlocking the Ruyi Scroll secret area. You can access the Ruyi  Scroll by either travelling at a Keeper’s Shrine or by using the Ruyi Scroll key item

The Ruyi Scroll Secret Location

The Ruyi Scroll is quite different to most other areas in Black Myth: Wukong. First and foremost, it’s actually considered as another main area like the Black Wind Forest or Yellow Wind Ridge and there’s only a single Keeper’s Shrine for you to activate.

Secondly, the Ruyi Scroll is more of a hub area for your merchant friends than an actual area you can explore, giving you easy access to all of your important vendors in one place.

Ruyi Scroll Secret Area

To be more specific, you’ll find the following NPCs in the Ruyi Scroll:

  • Xu Dog: A medicine merchant who creates Celestial Medicines for increased stats and Mortal Medicines for help in combat.
  • Shen Monkey: A drunkard who upgrades your Gourds for more healing or your Drinks for increased potency.
  • Chen Loong: Give him seeds and he’ll plant them, allowing you to harvest a steady stream of ingredients for your medicines.
  • Yin Tiger: A blacksmith who can upgrade your armour and craft new weapons.

The Ruyi Scroll does have one secret boss fight and that’s against Yin Tiger. By speaking to him, you can ask to Challenge him, which starts a very hard boss battle against the Tiger. Beat him, though, and you’ll walk away with a bevvy of very strong rewards, including a new transformation – Ebon Flow, which lets you turn into Yin Tiger – the ability to hold three Curios, and the option to craft a new set of awesome looking armour.

That was how to unlock the Ruyi Scroll secret area in Black Myth: Wukong
