Black Myth: Wukong | How to Unlock the Chu-Bai Spear (Four Captains Quest)Crafting new weapons and armour is one of the best pieces of progression in Black Myth: Wukong. As you journey through the path laid out by Sun Wukong, the Destined One can acquire a whole range of wicked-looking armour and weapons, all of which provide unique effects and bonuses. However, one of the most interesting is easily the Chu-Bai Spear, which you can unlock by completing the Four Captains quest for the Third Prince.

The Four Captains – also known as the Corrupted Captains – quest takes place in the New West. To be more specific, it takes place in the mysterious Pagoda Realm and tasks you with hunting down four once-noble figures who have transformed and corrupted into mindless beasts. If you find them all, you’ll acquire the Chu-Bai Spear, one of the best weapons in the game if you’re a fan of the Thrusting Stance.

How to Start the Four Captains Quest

To start the corrupted Captains questline in Black Myth: Wukong, you need to reach the Pagoda Realm in the New West, the third major area in the game. The Pagoda Realm is a secretive sub-area which unlocks after you defeat Kang-Jin Loong. The start of the Pagoda Realm is a dangerous place where, at any time, the Mani Wheel can begin spinning, driving all inhabitants – including yourself – into an unbridled rage while also spawning deadly creatures known as the Lantern Wardens.

Next to your starting cell in the Lower Pagoda, you’ll find a cell locked with a strange purple sigil. Inside will be two figures, one a man and the other a dead rat guai. Speaking to the man will reveal very little, as he has lost himself to pessimism and nihility. However, this is the Third Prince and the main NPC for the Corrupted Captains quest.

After defeating one of the Captains, you’ll receive their Spirits. Now, you can return to the Prince’s cell and see that the purple seal has been removed, allowing you to step inside. Before speaking to the Prince, be sure to interact with the two-headed corpse on the ground which will unlock Ashen Slumber rat guai transformation.

As for the Prince, he’ll be shocked at your arrival and your ability to take down one of his fabled Captains. He’ll then ask you to do the same with the remaining three Captains, all of whom have been horrifically transformed into beasts and monsters. Some of the Captains are easier to find than others but two can be found in the Pagoda Realm while the other two can be found in the Valley of Ecstasy.

Once you have all four of the Captain’s Spirits, you can return to the Prince one final time. After a brief cutscene, he’ll give you the Chubai Spearhead which you can use to craft the powerful Chu-Bai Spear, the best Thrusting Stance staff for most of Black Myth: Wukong

All Four Captain Locations in Black Myth: Wukong

Captain Lotus-Vision Location

The first Captain you’ll come across in Black Myth: Wukong, and the one to kick off the Third Prince’s quest, is Captain Lotus-Vision. To find him, make your way through the Pagoda Realm until you reach the Upper Pagoda Keeper’s Shrine, the second Shrine in the Pagoda Realm sub-area.

Upon arriving at the Upper Pagoda Shrine, go back through the nearby doorway and then look down. There will be a massive hole in the ground which leads to a small tucked away chamber bathed in deep purple. Hop down and the first of the Third Prince’s generals, Captain Lotus-Vision, awaits you.

Captain Lotus-Vision is a statue-esque monster who fights primarily with strange purple magic. Lotus-Vision prefers to fight at range, with the ability to teleport around the arena at any time. His most deadly attacks take the form of two long-range assaults. In the first, Lotus-Vision will teleport to the back of the arena and then fire a barrage of purple beams at you which are difficult to dodge. As for the second, he will fill the entire arena with beams which shoot towards the ground, leaving you little room to survive. Immobilize is the best Spell for this fight so keep it handy.

Captain Wise-Voice Location

The second of the Third Prince’s captains, Captain Wise-Voice, is the easiest of the four captains to locate in Black Myth: Wukong. That’s because he’s the main mini-boss at the end of the Pagoda Realm’s Mani Wheel and a required boss for progressing through the New West. Progress through the Pagoda Realm as normal until you reach the Mani Wheel Keeper’s Shrine near the heart of the Mani Wheel, which is where Captain Wise-Voice awaits you

Captain Wise-Voice is a tanky, centaur-like abomination. He will take little to no damage from attacks dealt to his feet, with his weak point being his metallic sphere face. To get to his head, you need to attack his feet until he staggers, causing him to drop to the ground. The majority of Wise-Voice’s attacks are stomping attacks which are relatively easy to dodge or parry. He does have a few lightning attacks which send out a shockwave around the arena, although these can be dodged using a precise jump or the Pillar Stance.

When he reaches 50% health, he will activate the Mani Wheel. This will cut your health in half but increase your attack power in return. At this point, most of Wise-Voice’s moves will repeat and you just need to survive long enough to down him again with your lowered health pool.

Captain Kalpa-Wave Location

Similar to Captain Wise-Voice, Captain Kalpa-Wave is another required mini-boss who you’ll encounter later on in the chapter. To be more specific, you’ll encounter him guarding the entrance to the New Thunderclap Temple, which is on the main path from the Longevity Road Keeper’s Shrine.

Captain Kalpa-Wave is, at first, a mass of red tendrils covering the front of the Thunderclap Temple. However, as you approach, he will shrink back into a more humanoid form, albeit one with a mangled and horrifically transformed upper half.

In battle, Captain Kalpa-Wave mainly attacks with his feet, which he uses to stomp on the ground. Additionally, he has several ranged attacks where he will spit blood at you, creating pools on the ground which deal damage over time. Fortunately, he’s relatively easy to stagger, giving you a very wide opportunity to punish him with high-focus Heavy Attacks or Spirits.

Captain Void-Illusion

The final Captain you need to locate in Black Myth: Wukong is Captain Void-Illusion and, unlike all of the other Captains, he doesn’t have a boss fight. In fact, he’s already dead out in the Valley of Ecstasy, trapped in his twisted form for all time.

To find Captain Void-Illusion, travel to the Longevity Road Keeper’s Shrine. To the right of the Shrine is a massive mountainous chunk of rock which you should circle around. Shortly after departing, you’ll find the corpse of Captain Void-Illusion in a clearing behind the rocky mass beneath a gigantic statue of the Buddha

Interact with the corpse, grab the Spirit of Captain Void-Illusion and your journey to free all of the corrupted Captains will be at an end.

The Chu-Bai Spear in Black Myth: Wukong

Despite only being an Epic rarity weapon, the Chu-Bai Spear is one of the most interesting tools in the Destined One’s arsenal and, depending on your playstyle, a weapon you may take to the end of the game.

The Chu-Bai Spear has 75 Attack and its unique effect integrates spear techniques into your Light Attack while also increasing the damage dealt by all Thrust Stance moves

Chu-Bai Spear

Chu-Bai Spear

The Thrust Stance is already one of the more powerful and popular stances in Black Myth: Wukong thanks to its long-range and high attack power. With the Chu-Bai Spear, all of those attacks – including Tactical Retreat and Whirling Thrust – become exponentially stronger. The Chu-Bai Spear also increases the damage dealt by Mobile Spin, allowing you to punish archers and sniper enemies from close range while protecting yourself from their projectiles.

While the Chu-Bai Spear will fall off in terms of damage in the late game, the unique benefits it offers are a game changer and will be enough reason for many to keep using it long after other weapons eclipse it in terms of damage. There is actually a weapon in the Black Myth: Wukong endgame which acts as a stronger upgraded version of the Chu-Bai Spear called the Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear.
