Black Myth: Wukong is filled to the brim with difficult adversaries for the Destined One to battle against. From horrific monsters who were once men to wild animalistic creatures, there are few in these lands who will not challenge you to a bloody brawl. One of the most difficult challenges you’ll encounter in the game is Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, a secret boss battle which takes place at the end of the game’s main story. Erlang is difficult for many reasons, least of all because of his massive moveset, which contains a laundry list of devastating attacks. To beat him, you’ll need to be precise, efficient, and willing to put up with a good deal of punishment.
If you’d like to learn more about how to unlock the Erlang boss fight, which unlocks access to Black Myth: Wukong’s true ending, then you can find more information in our ending guide here. The rewards are well worth the effort, though, as you’ll unlock many useful upgrade materials as well as a new weapon which is an upgraded version of the unique Chu-Bai Spear.

Erlang, The Sacred Divinity
Erlang Moveset
In Black Myth: Wukong, Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, is one of, if not the, hardest fights in the whole game. Not only can he hit like a truck but he has a large amount of health as well. Additionally, he has a long list of potential moves and combos, with three potential weapon choices to make things even more difficult.
At the start of the fight, Erlang has access to the following core combos, alongside some additional spear stabs and sweeps:
- Leaping Spear Combo: Erlang will leap into the sky, spear outstretched, before slowly coming to the ground. He’ll then jump back up and come at you again with his spear before ending with a light close-range flourish. Getting hit by this combo’s first attack will transition into a very powerful grab so avoid it at all costs. Dodge and then rush back in during the third hit to get in some easy damage.
- Lightning Kick Combo: Erlang readies his spear, flying towards you in a spin before kicking towards you with a lightning-imbued foot. He’ll repeat this twice in a row. Both attacks are relatively easy to dodge, just be aware of Erlang’s black dog which will come zooming in after the first blow.
- Four Hit Spear Combo: This is one of Erlang’s toughest combos to dodge because of how slow it is. He’ll begin by dragging his spear through the snow before following up with three fast spear stabs. Wait out the first attack longer than you think you need and you should be able to easily avoid the other three.
- Black Dog Combo: Erlang summons his black dog and the pair attack you together. First, Erlang throws his spear at you and then the dog rushes in before Erlang ends the combo by flying towards his spear and unleashing a sideways kick. The main difficulty here is keeping an eye on both Erlang and the dog as getting hit by one usually means getting hit by the other.
- Red Lightning Strike: Erlang will jump up and surround himself in yellow lightning which quickly turns red. As soon as you see the lighting change colour, dodge as Erlang will smash his spear into the ground.
- Falcon Dive: Erlang will transform into a falcon and then fly at you with talons outstretched. If you get caught in this attack, you’ll transition into a deadly grab attack. Dodge it, though, and Erlang will transform back and come at you with his spear twice, with the second hit being another grab attack. So long as you keep an eye on where Erlang is, this attack is fairly easy to dodge.
Alongside these moves, Erlang has a series of scripted attacks he’ll perform once he reaches certain health thresholds. Not only are these massive attacks dangerous in their own right but they also grant Erlang the ability to perform several new moves. At 75% Health, Erlang will fly up into the air and summon a gigantic axe. After a few seconds, this axe will descend to the floor, sending out a brief lightning pulse when it does. Shortly after, Erlang himself will crash into the floor, sending out a frosty after-shock which deals high damage if you get caught in it.
From this point forward, Erlang will use the axe, as well as his sword, in several devastating attacks, most of which come very quickly.
- Moment of Clarity: Erlang floats in the air, a ripple pulsing out from his body. Shortly after, he will quickly send his sword flying towards you, dealing 90% of your health if you get hit by it. To avoid this attack, watch Erlang’s sword hand and dodge when you see it flash yellow.
- Sword and Axe Combo: Erlang readies his spear and sword at the same time, striking out with incredible reach. He’ll then teleport above you with his axe which will crash down in a wide lightning AoE. The most dangerous attack here is the axe swing; don’t dodge as soon as Erlang appears before you and wait a moment before hopping away.
- Axe Arc: Erlang summons his axe before rushing in, sweeping it in an arc around his body twice. Dodge away from him as he approaches and you should have a good opportunity to punish him when the attack ends.
- Axe Aftershock: Erlang lashes out with his axe and then slams it into the ground. While the attack itself is easy to see coming, the aftershock will deal a lot of damage if you aren’t ready for it. Otherwise, it’s a great attack for punishment.
- Floating Axe Rush: Erlang will summon a field of flying swords around him and then hop atop his giant axe. The axe will then sweep through the arena towards you three times, concluding in a massive attack with a wide lightning AoE.
Then, at 50% Health, Erlang will summon a series of clones that will fire off lightning beams across the entire arena. The pattern of these attacks is always the same so you’ll soon figure out when to dodge. At the end of this attack, Erlang will fling out a wave of swords before charging towards you with his spear coated in red lightning. The best way to dodge this is to dodge as soon as you see the red lightning flash.
Once you’ve crossed the 50% threshold, Erlang will begin to randomly use his last unique attack, Sword Rain. He will rise into the air and begin hurling a legion of flying swords at you, which you can successfully parry using Mobile Spin. After a few moments, he will raise his arms before sending a stream of lightning-imbued swords at you; if you get caught in this, even at high Defence, it is almost always a one-shot kill below 75% of your maximum HP. The best way to dodge this is to watch Erlang’s hands. Press dodge when you see his arms come all the way back.
From here, it is a case of rinse and repeat until Erlang, the Sacred Divinity falls. This will transition into the second phase of the fight which, fortunately, seems almost impossible to lose. At that point, you can consider the fight won and enjoy the sheer maddening spectacle.
General Knowledge and Advice
The most frustrating part about battling Erlang in Black Myth: Wukong is that all of his attacks have a very different cadence based on which weapon he’s using. While wielding the spear, his attacks are very slow and floaty, which can catch you off guard if you dodge too early; meanwhile, his axe attacks are lightning-fast with little wind-up time, and his sword attacks are somewhere in between. The best way to learn these timings is to simply experience them but remembering which weapon correlates to which attack speed is incredibly useful.
Another thing you’ll notice early on is that Erlang will block a lot of your Light Attacks, reducing their damage significantly. Similar to Sekiro, Erlang will often bounce back after a few hits, his blade flashing a brighter orange than usual, and, if you attack him again at this stage, he’ll counter you. Fortunately, this counter doesn’t do any damage and instead sets you up for his next attack, which he usually does right after parrying. You can use this quirk to your advantage as you can remain very offensive and aggressive without fear or worry.
Lastly, most of Erlang’s damage is Lightning damage and he is capable of inflicting you with Shock. Shock is one of the most dangerous of the Four Banes as it makes you incredibly vulnerable, increasing damage from all sources while you are Shocked. As such, coming into the fight with high Lightning Resistance (which you can get from Xu Dog’s Celestial Medicines) or with Shock-Quelling Medicine is highly recommended.
Best Equipment and Spells for Erlang in Black Myth: Wukong
Best Armour Sets and Weapons
For armour sets, Wukong’s set of Golden Armour is very good for this fight. It provides a massive amount of Defence while also granting a variety of potent stat bonuses: equipping the whole set will net you 30 Maximum Mana, 30 Maximum Health, 30 Maximum Stamina, and 4% Critical Hit Chance, and that’s not including Jingubang (the weapon almost everyone should use for this battle). This is the armour set most players will want to wear (unless you’re using Spell Binder) if they want a good balance of offence and defence, especially with the Heaven’s Equal set bonuses.
Alternatively, there is the Yaksha armour set if you’d prefer a bit more risk and reward. The Outrage set bonus is incredibly strong and will massively speed up your fight with Erlang as the damage bonus is ridiculous. Of course, the downside is that you will also take a lot more damage, with more of Erlang’s attacks capable of two-shotting you while wearing this armour. This makes some of his harder-to-avoid attacks – such as the Sword Rain – far more deadly. However, this is still a superb set for those who like living on the edge.
Lastly, the Bull King’s armour set is another good choice for those worried about their ability to consistently dodge Erlang’s attacks. You won’t be able to craft the whole armour set in one playthrough but you will be able to craft two pieces, giving you access to Unyielding Resolve’s two-piece bonus (we recommend making the Bull King’s Mask for the Unique Effect). This armour set has the highest Defence in the game, which increases even further upon taking damage. Erlang’s fight has a lot going on and we recommend running at least a few pieces of the Bull King if you’re worried about keeping up.
Best Spells
If you’re confident in your ability to dodge attacks and want to go all out on Erlang with offence, we recommend using Spell Binder. This will seal all of your Spells – including your Spirits and Mantles – but greatly increase your physical capabilities in return. This will massively increase your Attack based on your Mana and it can really speed up the encounter with Erlang. You do need to be more careful with this method as you won’t have your Transformations or mobility Spells to back you up but it is undeniably potent.
Additionally, there is a bit of a trick you can use. Before popping Spell Binder, you can use your Spirit attack and your Vessel and still be able to cast Spell Binder, as they use Qi and not Mana. The Weaver’s Needle is incredibly powerful in this situation and you can use it to quickly strip Erlang of his early health bar while still accessing the benefits of Spell Binder.
However, if you’d rather have the backing of your spells, we highly recommend Cloud Step and Ring of Fire for this boss fight. Like most endgame bosses in Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll only be able to Immobilize Erlang once, with any future spell casts being redirected back at you. Similarly, Rock Solid is a good move but, thanks to Erlang’s floaty attacks and weird cadence, it can be tricky to time your parries and, even if you do, Erlang will often follow up with another attack immediately, damaging you anyway.
Meanwhile, Cloud Step works superbly in this fight. Not only can you use it to dodge out of the way of Erlang’s attack at the last moment, but the decoy you create will reliably attract his attention, giving you a bit of a break in case you need a moment to heal. Additionally, if you connect with Cloud Step’s Unveiling Strike, it will almost always stagger Erlang, breaking him out of tricky combos which could otherwise prove fatal. Just make sure that Erlang is in a good position before casting Unveiling Strike as you can whiff your attack if he’s too far away.
On the other hand, the Ring of Fire is mainly there as an additional source of healing. While it won’t drive back Erlang like it will with most other enemies, the Ring of Fire will provide an instant chunk of healing as well as Stamina and health regen over time. Erlang will likely drain a massive portion of your Gourd uses throughout the fight so having a little extra healing in your back pocket is never a bad thing.
Best Spirits and Transformations
When it comes to Spirits, we recommend using ones with potent Passive Effects. Whether you’re using Spell Binder or not, you’ll only get enough Qi to use your Spirit’s main attack once or twice per attempt whereas their Passive Effects are always active. Recommended Spirits for fighting Erlang include:
- Mad Tiger: Increases Attack but lowers Health
- Mother of Flamelings: Reduces Spell Cooldown
- Misty Cloud, Cloudy Mist: Reduces Cloud Step Mana cost
- Father of Stones: Increases Critical Hit Chance and Critical Damage
- Flint Chief: Increases Four Banes Resistance
If you decide not to use Spell Binder, Transformations are a lifesaver in this fight. No matter which Transformation you choose to use, all of them can be used in vital moments as a second health bar, allowing you to escape some of Erlang’s deadliest attacks while still dishing out good damage. However, be aware that Erlang has several moves dedicated to stripping you of your Transformed form. If he hits you with any of these attacks, you’ll instantly revert into the Destined One; the most common attack of this type is when Erlang transforms into a white tiger.
As for the best Transformations for Erlang, we recommend the following:
- Umbral Abyss (Macaque Chief): Has a good amount of health, damage, and mobility while also having the ability to Freeze Erlang with the Cold Heart Spell.
- Ebon Flow (Yin Tiger): Has incredible defensive potential with his Deflection ability, allowing you to soak up a lot of heavy damage.
- Golden Lining (Yellow Loong): Has immunity to Shock and can easily see through Erlang’s attacks, letting you rack up a lot of damage very quickly.
Erlang Boss Rewards
For those willing to push through failure and overcome the overwhelming obstacle that is Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, you will obtain a great many gifts and rewards for your perseverance. First and foremost, you’ll receive two strips of Celestial Ribbon – which you can use to craft Mythic armour or upgrade Legendary armour – as well as one piece of Kun Steel.
Alongside the materials, you’ll also unlock a brutal new Transformation Spell. Azure Dome allows you to become the Stone Monkey, a manifestation of primal rage. Unlike other transformations, you’ll still have access to most of your regular Spells – including Rock Solid and Cloud Step – while in the Stone Monkey state. Not only does this Transformation hit hard and have a good amount of bulk, but it can also heal itself by using its Heavy Attack.
Lastly, you will obtain the Mythic rarity Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear. This staff has equal stats to the Jingubang with 135 Attack and 6% Critical Hit Chance. The unique effect of the Double-Edged Spear is actually an upgraded version of the Chu-Bai Spear. It integrates spear techniques into your Light Attack Combo while increasing the damage dealt by all Thrust Stance attacks. Additionally, unique to the Double-Edged Spear, performing Forceful Thrust shoots a legion of swords from the staff into the opponent, dealing massive damage.
That was how to beat Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, in Black Myth: Wukong.
