Where to Find the Loong Scales in Black Myth: Wukong

Before you can face, or even find, the four Loongs, you’ll need to find the ancient Loong Scales, first. This special key item is what will let you break through the Loong’s veil of secrecy and call them to battle. You’ll find the Loong Scales in the Yellow Wind Ridge, the main area of Chapter 2 bu, before setting off to find them, we recommend equipping the Wandering Wight Spirit as its Spirit Attack will come in very handy shortly.

Travel to the Valley of Despair Keeper’s Shrine within Sandgate Village to begin your journey. From here, make your way down to the arena where you fought the beastly First Rat Prince boss. Adorning one of the walls of this arena is a series of ancient carvings of monks. If the Rat Prince was still alive, you could lure him to ram into this wall, breaking it and revealing a new pathway. Fortunately, you can still break the wall with certain Spirit Attacks, such as the Wandering Wight’s headbutt. Simply face the wall and summon the Spirit to shatter it

Entering this new space will reveal a strange and forgotten area with nought but a chest and a mural. Opening the chest will grant you the Loong Scales, the item you need to summon the four Loongs, as well as a brief bit of dialogue alluding to what will happen next. The four Loongs must be defeated in order – Red then Black then Azure and then finally Yellow – and there is one Loong in each chapter. With the Scales in hand, you can begin your slaughter.

All Loong Boss Fights

Red Loong Location

The first Loong you’ll need to defeat is the Red Loong. This dragon is dwelling in the main area of Chapter 1, the Black Wind Forest. To be more specific, you’ll need to head to the first area of Black Myth: Wukong, the Forest of Wolves.

Travel to the Outside the Forest Keeper’s Shrine and, once you arrive, make your way to the opposite side of the clearing from where you fought the Wandering Wight. Soon enough, you’ll come across a raging waterfall and the same voice from the cave will begin echoing throughout the clearing. Approaching the waterfall will give you a prompt to cast away the water, revealing a secret path to a new area.

This new area is the Loong Claw Grove and it’s also the arena where you will do battle with the Red Loong. This is the most animalistic and traditionally draconic Loong of the four. However, it is also by far the weakest and most players will be able to absolutely overwhelm the Red Loong in no time flat. It is worth mentioning that all of the Loongs fight with Lightning and Thunder so consider bringing Transformations or Medicines which counteract those two Banes.

Black Loong Location

With the Red Loong defeated, you can move on to the Black Loong who lurks within the Yellow Wind Ridge, the same area where you found the ancient Loong Scales. This time, you’ll be taking a trip to the Fright Cliff sub-area of Chapter 2.

Once you arrive at the Rockcrest Flat Keeper’s Shrine, you’ll almost immediately hear the voice from the cave once more. Follow it up the nearby stairs – which are being guarded by a Spearbone and a Blazebone – towards a streaming torrent of sand. Without the Loong Scales, this waterfall of sand would simply refuse you access but with the Scales in hand you can drive it away, unlocking yet another secret area.

The Black Loong’s arena is within the Hidden Loong Cavern and, while still distinctly draconic, they are a lot more humanoid than their Red Loong companion. The Black Loong fights with two large maces coated in lightning and, while still relatively weak, they have a lot of wide-area attacks which will hit the entire arena. As such, make sure to watch the ground for any pulsing lightning charges and you should be able to bring down the Black Loong just fine.

Cyan Loong Location

Next up is Cyan Loong and, unlike his brothers, he’s lurking out in the open in the New West, the main Chapter 3. In fact, you may have already come across him when you were exploring Turtle Island after freeing Bajie.

To find the Cyan Loong’s location in Black Myth: Wukong, teleport to the Turtle Island Keeper’s Shrine and then head on over to the eastern side of the great beast. There, sitting still on the edge of the turtle’s back will be the Cyan Loong, mindlessly fishing the days away.

As soon as you approach, the Cyan Loong’s mindlessness will still and his fishing rod will transform into a deadly sword. The Cyan Loong is most similar in design to Chen Loong and he battles in much the same way, dancing around the battlefield with high speeds and powerful electric attacks which can blow you away. Defensive Spells like Cloud Step and Rock Solid are very useful here once you get down the boss’ timings.

Yellow Loong Location

The last Loong you’ll need to beat for The Sire and Sons achievement in Black Myth: Wukong is the fearsome Yellow Loong. As you might expect, you’ll find him in Chapter 4’s main location, the Webbed Hollow, although he’s a bit trickier to track down than his predecessors.

Despite not being a secret area, the Relief of the Fallen Loong is a very out-of-the-way location in the Webbed Hollow. To reach it, start your journey at the Cliff of Oblivion Keeper’s Shrine where you fought the Right Hand of the Buddha. Proceed down the main path from the Shrine as normal until it branches out and you can choose to go right – which leads to the next main area – or left – which leads to a rope bridge. From here, you’ll need to head left over the bridge.

Soon after, you’ll reach a slightly less secure bridge where several Clawed Cocoons await you. If you try and cross the passage without clearing at least some of them, you’ll be knocked off one way or another. Your best bet for getting past this area is to carefully clear out the two closest Clawed Coccons using Pillar Stance or Thrust Stance before using Cloud Step to sneakily manoeuvre past the final two enemies; Cloud Step will make you invisible, allowing you to not draw aggro as you cross the beam.

From there, follow the linear path while avoiding the Beetle Guai littering the path and you’ll soon arrive at the Relief of the Fallen Loong. If the Red, Black and Cyan Loongs have been bested, a mysterious figure will be waiting for you inside a gazebo near the Keeper’s Shrine.

This is the Yellow Loong, the deadliest of the four Loongs and also the most humanoid. Wielding a great-bladed spear and boasting impressive offence and mobility, the Yellow Loong is incredibly tough. He has several potent gap closers and will often dodge around the small combat arena. The best method for dispatching the Yellow Loong is to overwhelm him; using Pluck of Many will confuse his AI, something you can further exploit by popping a powerful Transformation like the Macaque Chief. Of all the Loong fights, this is also the one where you’ll want to bring Shock-Quelling Medicine, as well as any other buffing Medicine you can create.

After a lengthy battle, the Yellow Loong will fall and The Sire and Sons trophy or achievement will pop. Additionally, besting the Yellow Loong will unlock the Golden Lining Transformation, allowing you to transform into the deadly dragon, who is immune to Shock and can easily see through enemy attacks.

Rewards for Beating the Loong Bosses in Black Myth: Wukong

Each Loong you defeat will drop a wide variety of rewards for defeating them, including several useful Curios, Drinks, Soaks, and more. However, the most important items each will award you are the special upgrade materials unique to each Loong.

On your first playthrough, defeating the four Loongs will grant you the materials to unlock a new weapon branch of the Willow Wood Staff. This branch lets you first create the Loongwreath Staff and then later the Golden Loong Staff which both have the unique effect of moderately increasing the damage of all Pillar Stance moves. Additionally, in the case of the Golden Loong Staff, you will also summon a Loong to cast Thunder at an enemy when you use a 3 or 4 Focus cost Heavy Attack in Pillar Stance.

Loongwreath Staff:

  • Thunder Tail x1 (Red Loong)
  • Thunderbone x1 (Black Loong)
  • Refined Iron Sand x1
  • Yaoguai Core x2
  • Will x 1200

Golden Loong Staff:

  •  Mountain-Shaking Claw x1 (Cyan Loong)
  • Sea-Supporting Tendon x1 (Yellow Loong)
  • Kun Steel x2
  • Will x45,000

Lastly, each Loong will also drop a Loong Pearl upon death, a special type of material which can be used to craft the Stormflash Loong Staff in New Game +. This staff requires you to have 9 Loong Pearls (5 from the base game and 4 from defeating the Loongs in New Game +) as well as 4 Golden Tree Cores, 2 Kun Steel, and 45,000 Will. This is an incredibly powerful staff and one of, if not the, strongest weapons in all of Black Myth: Wukong
