Captain Marvel has received a massive buff in Marvel Snap‘s August 3, 2023 OTA balance update. Let’s first review the changes to her card and then we can get into the best Captain Marvel decks in Marvel Snap. The card itself did not undergo any ability modifications, instead it is a cost and power change. Instead of giving her sole power boost, the developers took her from being a 5-cost, 6-power to 4-cost, 5-power.
This cost change is incredibly useful as now you are able to play her earlier and take advantage of her ability. For those of you who do not know, her ability reads: At the end of the game, move to a location that wins you the game, (if possible). A super sweet ability indeed! As a result, we’ve highlighted the best Marvel Snap decks to use this all-new Captain Marvel in.
Hawks ‘n’ Rocks – I Am The Captain Now
Hawks ‘n’ Rocks is a classic deck that just about everybody is familiar with by now. Focusing on the use of Rockslide and Korg to increase the size of your opponent’s deck, this playstyle is straightforward but in no way boring. In fact, it offers many different win conditions, including the use of Iron Lad if your hand is lacking. The deck list is as follows:
- Quinjet
- Korg
- Zabu
- Agent Coulson
- Rock Slide
- Shang-Chi (or Cosmo, Enchantress)
- Captain Marvel
- Iron Lad (or Mystique, Black Widow, Rogue)
- Darkhawk
- White Queen (or Moon Girl)
- Nick Fury
- Devil Dinosaur (or Ronan) Note: If you want to play Ronan instead of Dino, then make sure to include Maximus and either Master Mold and/or Baron Mordo. You can include these cards instead of your drawing cards such as; White Queen, Nick Fury, and Agent Coulson.
By taking Captain Marvel down to a 4-cost she now is able to get discounted by Zabu. Not only is this an indirect buff to Zabu, but it also allows you to play our favorite cosmic legend on turn 3! Basically, you set her down and forget. Hopefully, at the end of the game, she can benefit you with her effect. Once you play her down, there’s not much tracking you need to do. Simply continue playing by building up your Hawk or filling up your hand for Dino. All in all, Captain Marvel helps add some extra power to your Dino or Hawk lanes if you miscalculated or didn’t draw the necessary tools to boost your power further.
Shuri’s Plan – Double or Nothing
Ah Shuri, it’s almost like this genius from Wakanda is destined to always have a place in the meta. The best thing about his deck is how cheap it is to build. There are no series 4/5 cards apart from Zabu who can easily be replaced with Armor. In fact, the traditional way to play a Shuri deck is by using Armor to protect your Red Skull/Taskmaster. However, we believe that there is incredible value to be had by discounting your Shuri, Captain Marvel, Enchantress and Mary. Here is the deck list:
- Zero
- Ebony Maw
- Zabu (or Armor)
- Lizard
- Sauron
- Electro
- Enchantress
- Captain Marvel
- Shuri
- Typhoid Mary
- Taskmaster (or Vision)
- Red Skull
Sauron is key in this archetype as he allows you to rid your cards of their negative on-going effects. Zabu/Armor are great if you draw them on turn 1 or 2, but in the end-game it’s kind of useless, especially if you’ve played Sauron earlier. Yet, if you do indeed manage to play one of them on turn 2, then you’re going to be able to play comfortably and safely. Relating back to Captain Marvel, if you Shuri her, she becomes 10-power which is extremely useful considering her ability to move at the end of the game. This increases the chance of you winning and also helps you against Shang-Chi. If you get Shang-ed in a different lane, Captain Marvel can help you balance out power across the board by going into that lane at the end of the game.
Pure Lockdown – Let Me In!
High Evolutionary and Legion have really popularized the use of lockdown. Not to mention a friendly little shark by the name of Jeff… Yet, it is all for good reason. Lockdown is dominating the meta in a way we’ve never seen before. There’s not much you can do when your opponent plays Storm on turn 4 followed by Legion in the same lane on turn 5. This is the deck list:
- Nebula
- Sunspot
- Goose
- Jeff (or Nightcrawler)
- Daredevil
- Storm
- Polaris (or Lizard, Juggernaut)
- Captain Marvel
- Professor X
- Legion (or Gamora, Green Goblin, Spider-Man)
- Doctor Doom
- Magneto
First of all, Daredevil is essential in this deck as playing him almost guarantees you victory in a lane. All you have to do is simply set him down and play Professor X in one of the winnable lanes. Even if you somehow miscalculate and blunder the play, you have Jeff to make up for it. Alternatively, for those of you who don’t have Jeff, you might want to play a Spider-Man and Nightcrawler package instead. Of course, you have Doom and Captain Marvel to increase reach horizontally across the board in locked locations that you might have lost. Magneto and Polaris are especially useful in manipulating the board to your liking. In fact, Polaris can pull out Sunspots and Nebulas played in your Stormed location. This is an end-game deck and will really frustrate your opponents as you lock them out and foil their plans.
