Baldur's Gate 3 Adamantium Golem Grym GuideAdamantium equipment can be one of the best ways to make your character overpowered in Baldur’s Gate 3. That being said, to acquire this powerful mythical equipment you’re going to need to venture into the underdark. Once you’ve gotten there, make your way into the Grymforge so you can try and rekindle the legendary Adamantium forge that lies within. To get there you’ll have to deal with several obstacles including a slaver operation, and a potent absolute follower named Nere. However, if you play your cards right you should be able to breeze through them and make your way to the real challenge, the forge itself.

Operating as a puzzle of sorts, the forge once activated has a terrible trap lying in wait. The great Adamantium golem, Grym, springs out of the lava valve the moment you try to heat the ore for your potent design. Fortunately, there are two ways you can defeat this monstrosity along with a vital weakness it has. However, you’ll be charged with keeping your party alive while lava spews, and this engine of violence consumes. Overall, Grym may be one of the more difficult opponents in Baldur’s Gate 3, especially if you don’t have the hammer meant to counter him. Luckily if you do manage to defeat him without the hammer you can get a super potent achievement.

What is the Adamantium Golem?

Grym is the name of the Adamantium golem that defends the forge with its entire being. This terrifyingly massive construct acts as both a guardian and an executioner to anything that attempts to activate the forge. In this way, it is a challenge you must succeed in overcoming to gain access to the ever-potent Adamantium equipment. Overall, this creature is incredibly powerful, using a mixture of damage resistance, and size to overwhelm enemies. You can easily take advantage of this by keeping him in hazardous locations such as the lava of the forge, or stun locked. The problem lies in the fact that this monstrosity is capable of resisting magic, and can’t be subject to critical damage.

Overall, Grym is just another variant of the metallic golems which are all too common in Dungeons and Dragons. The difference remains to be that Adamantium is one of the most potent materials in the franchise, as it can resist critical hits, and deal them with successful blows. In this regard, a golem made of this material is incredibly powerful and able to make short work of not only living enemies but obstacles and terrain as well. They are, like the hammer that forged them, capable of shaping the environment and foes around them. Dealing cruel bludgeoning damage that’s amplified by the heated metal effect. Despite this however, the Adamantium golem is not invincible, nor is it infallible as you have multiple methods to take advantage of when fighting it!

Grymforge

Grymforge is the overall location where you will find this creature. Located in the Underdark, it is inhabited by a slaver operation of Duergar who enslaved deep gnomes for manual labor. While this doesn’t seem to be integral to completing the forge itself, by working with the gnomes you can easily get there without scrutiny. Keep in mind that by helping the slavers, they will typically try to stop you from operating the forge once you get there. Despite this, within the bowels of this ancient place is the Adamantium forge itself, and with it, the defender which holds the same name as this ruin. It’s important to note that throughout this place are the bodies of dark justiciars, along with broken statues that suggest that this once used to be a place of shar.

Throughout the depths of Grymforge are countless dangers including slavers, explosives, rubble, lava elementals, and other obstacles. Despite this, at the level of equipment you should be carrying during act two, this is barely much of an issue for you. The biggest things you’ll want to consider are carrying fire-resistance items and plenty of healing. Additionally, magical damage like force, lightning, and acid are more than useful in the upcoming fights. Otherwise, dark vision and the ability to smash rocks will be the biggest needs to traverse Grymforge as a whole.

Adamantium Templates

While you travel around Grymforge, you will find several template molds that can be used at the forge itself. Each of these is essential for crafting an item made of Adamantium, as they go with a molded weapon approach. Because of this, you have several options from a variety of weapons and shields to armor and helmets. Of them, each mold can be found either around the Grymforge itself or through the corpses that litter its halls. Some of them are trapped behind cracks and crevices you’ll need to explore through, while others are more freely given. Ultimately though, there is only one template that you really should consider bringing with you for the rest of your campaign.

Adamantium scale mail is medium armor that completely restricts critical hits from happening to you. This is a powerful ability and one of the signature reasons why the golem itself is so deadly. If taken advantage of, you could go the rest of your game without needing to worry about suffering from surprise round critical damage. Beyond this, items like the Adamantium mace and helmet are incredibly potent as well. Sadly, the downside of Adamantium equipment is that it’s incredibly heavy, and on certain classes like warlocks, they can be cumbersome. Otherwise, making use of it can ensure an easy end game even in the harder difficulties. No matter what though, this unique equipment is potent enough to keep most characters coming back to it!

Mythril Ore

To get access to Adamantium weaponry you’re going to need access to ore found around the location. This can be found in the form of long pillars of crystal-like metal which is most commonly known as Mythril. Once treated with lava smelting and pressure one can produce their Adamantium equipment. This one is heavy and hard to find, being placed in books and crannies as a reward for exploring Grymforge as a whole. This material can only be worked through lava from beneath the forge vented upward, thus the forge is one of a few places you can find Adamantium equipment. In Baldur’s Gate 3 it will be the only place this material can be found in any quantity. The ore itself appears to be a silvery material that when heated without mold creates what’s called slag. This material can also be melted down though it’s less effective.

Two Paths to Victory

Finally, once you face the Adamantium golem, you’re going to need to choose which route you’ll take to victory. You’ll have to either go the route of fighting them with magic weaponry and brute force or use your environment and the forgehammer against it. In both examples, you’ll have to put a little bit of work into your plan before it’ll be made easy, but the forge hammer is the quickest option. However, if you want a special achievement for your job, make sure you fight Grym the old-fashioned way with spells and weapons. You’re going to have a few advantages you can use against Grym with the environment that you should be aware of.

For one, you will be fighting in a pool of lava with only a few moveable areas to get to. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have some teleportation or jump spells handy for mobility. Additionally, as long as the golem is superheated, they will take more damage than if they are not. Because of this, you are going to always make sure this creature remains in the lava unless you aim to kill it with the forge hammer. Another thing to keep in mind is that the golem itself is massive and made of metal, so by using lightning and shatter spells on it you’re sure to maximize damage. Ultimately though, the best way to stop this machine early is to use the forge hammer itself, luring it onto the platform before crushing it outright.

The Adamantium Forge will be filled with hot lava during the conflict with Grym.

The Adamantium Forge will be filled with hot lava during the conflict with Grym. During this time its a good idea to take advantage of the lava, when fighting Grym. This ensures that you can make his critical status go away via the super-heated metal ability.

Forge Hammer Method

The forge hammer method of dealing with this Adamantium golem refers to luring the golem onto the platform and crushing it with the lever. This is a simple option since you are just completing the operation of the forge itself, however, it deprives you of an achievement. In higher difficulties like honor mode, this may be an exceedingly better way of handling the golem than just fighting it because of the large health pool. Your main goal in luring the creature towards the hammer is to maintain dealing damage to it and keeping it superheated. If the golem loses this effect, it has an extended damage resistance. Because of this, making it travel through the lava, or propelling it into the molten environment is the best scenario.

Magic and Steel

If you want to fight this creature to the death, you can choose to battle it with your own will. This is a tedious process as the Adamantium golem has a large health point pool, knocks enemies prone, and can deal critical damage if not superheated. This is an immensely powerful opponent that requires the player to not only keep themselves aware of their surroundings but also of the enemy’s resistance. Adamantium itself means you will not be able to affect it with criticals, while it will always deal critical damage if it hits. As an incredibly annoying bonus to this, this creature is extremely large making it a hassle to deal with. Ultimately you have to take advantage of its superheated debuffs if you want to win easily.

Magic weapons, spells like shatter, and lightning damage in general are the best ways to go about this. Additionally, like with the forgehammer method, you want to keep this creature superheated at all times. It shouldn’t be hard to keep it in the lava, however, the trouble comes in when it tries to throw you into said lava as well. Because of this mobility and damage is key. You won’t want to try and tank this creature, much rather avoid it outright. Staying spaced out and taking care to mind your surroundings can see this creature handled within a few turns. Otherwise, you might be dealing with an incredibly long and uphill battle against a tough and worthy guardian of the forge.

Adamantium Equipment

For the most part, the effects of Adamantium equipment are similar to the abilities of the golem itself. Weapons made out of the substance are capable of dealing damage critically against things they hit. This often means they’re exceedingly powerful swords, spears, and hammers due to the nature of their actions. Adamantium tools and weaponry can be among some of the finest in craftsmanship and are highly sought after. However, due to the intense methods of manufacturing the material, and then shaping it, they remain exceedingly rare.

On the other hand, armor is capable of resisting critical damage and can be put right to avoid being broken by non-magical means. Additionally, Adamantium armor and equipment can be decent in the medium and heavy armor class range at improving your overall AC. They are a good starting point for enchantment, however, the only issue with this equipment remains how heavy it is. No matter what you get in terms of weapons or armor, it will be far heavier than steel variants of it. Despite this on a fighter or paladin builds Adamantium equipment can be some of the best optimizational things to get your hands on!

A Grym Fate Achievement

On higher difficulties, it will be outright difficult to decide to take this Adamantium golem on without the help of the environment. However, doing this and beating it with your spells and resolve will net you a rare steam achievement called “A Grym Fate”. Along with this, you’ll get an inspiration for yourself that counts for having stopped this powerful construct. Overall though, it just feels nice to have beaten this ancient guardian of nearly indestructible nature with just your monk fists, and wall of air.
