How to Change Outfits in Astro Bot

First and foremost, before we take a look at all of Astro’s outfits and how to unlock them, let’s first go over how to change Astro’s outfit in Astro Bot. To change Astro’s costume, you need to have opened the Changing Room. This special building in the Crash Site is where you’ll go to view any outfits you’ve unlocked and where you can change into new ones.

The Changing Room is the third building you’ll unlock after the Gatcha Lab and the Dual Speeder Garage, meaning that you’ll need to find 48 Puzzle Pieces before the Changing Room becomes available to use. This, unfortunately, means that you won’t be able to change Astro’s outfit until arriving at the third major galaxy, the Serpent Starway.

How to Unlock New Costumes in Astro Bot

Most of the new costumes for Astro in Astro Bot are unlocked by purchasing random capsules in the Gatcha Lab. This giant gachapon machine spits out one of 169 random items whenever you spend 100 Coins on it. The item in the capsule can be one of three things; a prize or item associated with a rescued Bot, a new colour for your Dual Speeder, or a new costume for Astro.

There are a total of 20 costumes to unlock in Astro Bot (including Astro’s base outfit), meaning that just over 10% of the Gatcha Lab rewards will be new outfits. You’ll know you’ve pulled a new costume whenever the object inside of the capsule is a solid gold ball (which is similar to the silver Dual Speeder Colour capsules).

However, the order in which you unlock new outfits from the Gatcha Lab is completely random and you can even unlock outfits from Bots you have yet to rescue. Additionally, new capsules will only arrive in the Gatcha Lab as you rescue more Bots, meaning that there is a limit. If you’re hunting for a specific outfit, be sure to check back in at the Crash Site regularly to spend your hard-earned Coins.

Throwback Outfit Guide

The major exception to the costume rule and the only outfit in Astro Bot that you must unlock is the Throwback Outfit. This costume renders Astro in the beautifully nostalgic blocky style of the PS1 era.

To unlock the Throwback Outfit, you must complete The Great Master Challenge, a gruelling gauntlet that pushes your traversal and platforming skills to the max. Every major hurdle or obstacle you’ve faced so far will be flung at you one after another; glass floors, tricky platforming, relentless enemies, and more stand between you and the end. Additionally, like with the PlayStation icon-themed challenges, you have to be perfect as one mistake will send you back to the very start.

However, before you can even attempt the Great Master Challenge, you need to unlock it. The Great Master Challenge awaits you at the top of the Gold Statue, which appears at the Crash Site once you find all 120 Jigsaw Pieces. If that wasn’t all, though, you’ll also need to have rescued all 300 Bots to create a tall enough Bot Wall to reach the top of the moon, where the last challenge awaits.

Once you manage to beat the Great Master Challenge, you’ll rescue the 301st Bot, the Master Onion Bot from PaRappa the Rapper. This will also award you with several other cosmetics, including the Classic Dual Speeder colour and the Throwback Costume for Astro.

Astro Bot Variations

The first set of costumes in Astro Bot are variations of the normal Astro outfit. These all keep Astro’s regular proportions and outfit (mostly) but play around with it in different ways, mainly with texture and material. The main exceptions here are the Throwback Outfit – which, as we mentioned, imagines Astro as a blocky PS1 mascot – and the Skeleton Outfit – which strips Astro of his metal shell, leaving only a bony interior behind.

There are four costumes in this category:

  • Throwback Outfit
  • Gold Astro Outfit
  • Stealth Astro Outfit
  • Skelly Astro Outfit

PlayStation Icon Outfits

The majority of Astro’s outfits in Astro Bot are homages to PlayStation icons from across the ages. There’s representation from back in the PS1 era up to modern-day Sony, giving every PlayStation fan at least one outfit they’ll love wearing.

For the PS1 era, there are two outfits which stand out for those with a nostalgic soul:

  • Ape Outfit (Ape Escape)
  • Lovestruck Lyricist Outfit (PaRappa the Rapper)

Next up is the PS2 era of Sony, which has the most costumes attributed to it. This selection of outfits celebrates the great 3D platformers of old, as well as two absolutely iconic atmospheric Sony games from years past:

  • Tooled-Up Mechanic Outfit (Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank)
  • Eco Warrior Outfit (Jak from Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
  • Ring-Tailed Thief Outfit (Sly from Sly Cooper)
  • Wandering Trespasser Outfit (Wander from Shadow of the Colossus)
  • Horned Protector Outfit (Ico from Ico)

Lastly, there is a small selection of outfits from more modern Sony franchises, including Bloodborne and The Last of Us. There’s even one dedicated to the cult-classic Gravity Rush franchise from Sony Japan. In total, this category has four options:

  • Fungus Head Outfit (Infected from The Last of Us)
  • Yharnam Tourist Outfit (Hunter from Bloodborne)
  • Gravity Shifter Outfit (Kat from Gravity Rush
  • GranTurismo Racer Costume

Miscellaneous Costumes

The final set of costumes for Astro is a bunch of miscellaneous outfits which are mainly there to make Astro look cute. Three of these costumes dress Astro up in animal-themed attire, while the final outfit has him dressed up in his Captain’s best.

  • Teddy Outfit
  • Red Panda Outfit
  • Cow Outfit
  • Pirate Astro Costume

Those were all 20 costumes in Astro Bot and how to unlock them.
