9 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Tips for Combat

This KeenGamer guide includes some Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips for fighting enemies in the not-so-wonderful world of ancient Greece. Are you getting killed too often in Odyssey? If so, check out the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey combat tips below.

9 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Tips for Combat

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is an action RPG with intensive combat action. This game is full of open battlefields, forts, military camps, fortresses, animal dens, and bandit camps where the Eagle Bearer must fight all manner of enemies, be it from the Cult of Kosmos or otherwise. You can also fight it out within the Arena gladiator events in Pephka for more glorified combat. Thus, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is much more about open brawling than stealthy assassinations than many earlier games in the AC series. Here are some Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips for fighting enemies better.

Don’t Fight Enemies More Than Three Levels Above You

This may be a relatively obvious Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tip, but there’s no doubt it’s somewhat easier to fight enemies at or below your character level. You’ll certainly get killed more often by fighting enemies more than three levels above you. That’s especially likely when fighting tougher enemies like mythical creatures, fortress captains and leaders, mercenaries, legendary animals, cult members, etc. So, don’t attempt quests clearly beyond your level if you want an easier ride in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Dodge, Dodge, and Dodge Again

Dodging is crucial to effective combat in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, whether fighting humans, animals, or mythical creatures. Wait for an enemy to lunge at you and press the Space key to dodge the strike. This will leave the enemy exposed for you to get a few hits in before they can recover. Keep on dodging to avoid getting hit and build up your adrenaline for unleashing your combat abilities on opponents.

Scout Ahead With Icarus

Scout ahead with your Icarus bird to see what you’re up against when approaching military camps, forts, and fortresses. This will show you the positions of enemies and their general combat level. Icarus will also enable you to see the best starting point from which to attack a fort. Never attack fortresses from front entrances, which are usually more heavily guarded. Instead, infiltrate the fort from a side where there are fewer guards stationed. Doing so will enable you to sneak in and surprise at least a few enemies.

Surprise Your Enemies

The element of surprise is important to combat in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. When an enemy is unaware you’re there, you can launch stealth attacks to inflict more damage or even kill him instantly. Although it’s hard to clear out whole forts and camps with stealth attacks, you can usually pull off at least a few surprise attacks on enemies before others notice you’re there and raise alarm bells. So, try to enter forts and camps unnoticed (best done at night) and get into positions from which you can launch surprise attacks on at least a few enemies.

Rush Assassination is a particularly effective ability for launching surprise assaults on enemies. This ability enables you to chuck the Spear of Leonidas at an unsuspecting enemy for a high-damage attack that can be chained up to three times when fully upgraded. When used against lower-level enemies, it’s possible to kill up to three guards in one go by launching surprise attacks with Rush Assassination. However, you can’t utilize this ability in completely direct combat.

Kick Enemies Off High Cliffs

Kicking enemies off high cliffs can be a good way to kill them off when you’ve unlocked the Spartan Kick ability. If there’s a high cliffside edge near you when fighting, move toward it to draw pursuing enemies alongside it. Then dodge an enemy’s attack and kick him off the cliffside. Kicking an enemy off a high cliff in such a way will usually kill him immediately or at least inflict heavy damage. It’s an especially good way to deal with pesky mercenaries who will often be pursuing you.

Unlock and Utilize Overpower

Overpower is an ability that enables you to unleash extremely high-damage attacks in combat with three adrenaline segments. Having that ability makes killing enemies somewhat easier. So, I recommend that you unlock and upgrade this ability as soon as you can. You’ll need to upgrade the Spear of Leonidas to level five to unlock level three Overpower.

Light Your Arrows

You can set your arrows ablaze by lighting them with lit braziers. To do so, walk up to a lit brazier and point your arrow target over it until a small flame alights. Then aim your flaming arrow and fire it at enemies to make them burn. Shooting through fire also inflames arrows.

At any rate, you should certainly make good use of your bow in combat with or without fire arrows. That’s especially the case when fighting animals, most of which can’t attack from a distance. Lions, wolves, boars, and dogs can’t shoot back at you. Aim for the heads of enemies to inflict higher-damage bow shots and keep a good supply of wood for replenishing arrows in combat when needed.

Retreat When There Are Many Enemies

When you’re fighting many enemies and running low on health, it’s often a good idea to retreat. When you retreat from a combat situation, your health bar automatically fully replenishes. Furthermore, some enemies will usually pursue you while others won’t, which spreads them out. You can then return to pick off the enemies you were fighting with surprise attacks and fully restored health.

Unlock and Utilize Shield Breaker

Shield Breaker is a handy ability to have up your sleeve for combat in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It enables you to destroy enemies’ shields by ripping them from your foes and inflicting some damage at the same time. That ability makes it somewhat easier to deal with the many human enemies equipped with shields in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It’s especially useful for fighting conquest battles in which there are loads of Spartan and Athenian soldiers with shields.
