5 Ways to Fix the Fortnite Settings Not Saving on a Windows PC

This troubleshooting post tells you how players can fix Fortnite settings when they’re not saving. Do the options in your Fortnite game keep on resetting every time you restart it? If that is the case, you can resolve that gaming issue on a Windows PC by applying the resolutions for it below.

Fortnite incorporates lots of settings many players tweak to optimize that game. However, some players have reported the Fortnite options don’t save when they change them. One player reported that issue on Reddit as follows: “I have to change my settings every single time I load up Fortnite. They reset literally EVERY time. Does anyone know why?” Thus, Fortnite’s settings reset to default for some players after restarting the game. This is how you can fix the Fortnite settings not saving on Windows 11/10 PCs.

Uncheck the Read-Only Setting for the GameUserSettings File

The most widely confirmed way to fix the Fortnite settings not saving is to deselect the Read-only option for the game’s GameUserSettings file. This is also Epic’s official resolution for that issue. These are the steps for disabling the GameUserSettings file’s Read-only option.

  1. To start Run, simultaneously press your keyboard’s Windows logo and R keys.
  2. Input %localappdata% within Run’s Open command box and click on OK.
  3. Double-click the FortniteGame folder inside the Local directory that opens.
  4. Next, open the Saved > Config > WindowsClient subfolder inside the FortniteGame folder.
  5. Right-click GameUserSettings.ini file inside the WindowsClient subfolder to access its context menu and select Properties.
  6. Uncheck the selected Read-only box on the General tab to deselect that option.
  7. Select Apply > OK in the GameUserSettings.ini properties window to save the changed attribute setting.

Deselect the Read-Only Setting for the ClientSettings.Sav File

This potential resolution for the Fortnite settings not saving is similar to the previous one. However, you must disable the Read-only setting for the ClientSettings.Sav file instead. To apply this resolution, go through steps one to three of the previous resolution and open the Saved > Config subfolder. Right-click the ClientSettings.Sav file there to select Properties and disable its Read-only option if selected.

Turn Off the Controlled Folder Access Feature

Windows Security’s controlled folder access feature can block games and software from accessing files in protected folders. This feature can cause game setting issues because it can block access to configuration files. If you have that feature turned on, disable controlled folder access before starting Fortnite like this.

  1. Double-click the shied icon inside the Windows system tray area.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection on the left side of the Windows Security app.
  3. Click Manage ransomware protection at the bottom of the tab.
  4. Next, click the toggle switch for the Controlled folder access option to Off

Some third-party security apps may have similar features to controlled folder access. If you’ve installed antivirus software, check if it has any similar options. Disable any antivirus feature that could restrict Fortnite’s access to folders.

Verify Fortnite

Players who can’t fix the Fortnite settings not saving with the above resolutions should try verifying the game’s files. Missing or corrupted game files could be another potential cause for settings not saving. So, check out the instructions on this Epic page to verify Fortnite’s files.

Reinstall the Fortnite Game

If nothing else works, reinstall your Fortnite game. This will likely fix the issue if caused by a corrupted installation. These are the steps for uninstalling and reinstalling Fortnite.

  1. Start Epic Games and click Library in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the ellipses (three-dot) button for Fortnite.
  3. Select Uninstall and the confirmation option.
  4. Click the uninstalled Fortnite game in your Epic library.
  5. Press Install to download and reinstall the game.

There aren’t that many potential ways to fix the Fortnite settings not saving. However, the resolutions for resolving that issue above are widely confirmed to work. With that gaming issue resolved, you can apply all the Fortnite graphical, sound, and control options as required.
