Stardew Valley Dating Guide: Shane

There's nothing more romantic than a man that wants nothing to do with you, but even the toughest nuts to crack are always the most delicious in the end. In this Stardew Valley dating guide, we will go over how to make Shane, the emotionally closed off alcoholic of Pelican Town, to fall desperately in love with you.

Stardew Valley Dating Guide: Shayne

Who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers troupe? Okay, I guess Shane isn’t really your enemy in terms of the game, but his grumpiness definitely does not kick your love story off to a good start.

Stardew Valley is a game in which players are tasked with restoring their grandfather’s farm to its former glory. To do this, players must harvest crops, raise animals and expand the farm’s faculties, but there are other side quests players can pursue. One of the most beloved side quests is to develop a romantic relationship with townspeople.

Developing relationships is an important side quest because it helps you advance in the game and unlocks new stories to follow. There are 12 Pelican Town citizens that are eligible for marriage, and these characters have their own background with dreams and personal struggles. Getting to know these characters and giving them gifts is the best way to build your relationship with them. The more you get to know a character, the higher your heart rating will be. Reaching a certain heart rating with a character will unlock “heart events” that give you more information about them.

Every character has their own schedule, likes and dislikes. Understanding these factors will be key to furthering your relationship. In this Stardew Valley dating guide, we will go over everything you need to know about dating Shane.

Shane is described as rude, unhappy, depressed and a heavy drinker. However, with a little bit of work, his attitude starts to change when you start a friendship with him. He is renting a room from his Aunt Marnie and is frequently around her ranch. He spends most of his days working and his nights drinking, and that really sums up Shane.

When you first meet Shane, he can come off as grumpy and rude but eventually he will warm up to you.

Stardew Valley Dating Guide: Shane’s Likes and Dislikes

You can gift just about any item to a character, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to like it. Every character has their own personalized list of items they love, like, feel neutral about, dislike and hate. Gifting an item that a character loves will earn you more points towards your heart rating, but gifting an item that a character hates will subtract points.

Loves

Shane loves all the items listed under “Universal Loves,” but more personalized items that he loves are beer, hot pepper, pepper poppers and pizza. When one of these items is given to Shane, he will say “Oh wow! How’d you know this is my favorite?”

Likes

Shane likes the majority of items listed under “Universal Likes,” with the exception of hating pickles. He also likes all eggs and all fruits (with the exception of loving hot peppers). When one of these items is given to Shane, he will say “This is great! Thanks!”

Neutral

Shane feels neutral towards all the items under “Universal Neutrals” and all milks. When one of these items is given to Shane, he will say “Oh, you got me something? Thanks!”

Dislikes

Shane dislikes all the items listed under “Universal Dislikes,” but more personalized items he dislikes are chanterelle, common mushroom, daffodil, dandelion, ginger, hazelnut, holly, leek, magma cap, morel, purple mushroom, seaweed, snow yam, wild horseradish and winter root. When one of these items is given to Shane, he will say “I don’t really like this.”

Hates

Shane hates all the items listed under “Universal Hates,” with the exception if disliking seaweed. More personalized items that Shane hates are pickles and quartz. When one of these items is given to Shane, he will say “Why are you giving me your garbage?”

Obviously, it’s better to gift Shane items he loves rather than hates as it will increase your heart rating faster. Giving him an item on his birthday can earn 8x more points, and during the Feast of the Winter Star you can earn 5x more points. Shane’s birthday is Spring 20 and giving him an item will also unlock a unique dialogue.

Among all of Shane's blue chickens, his favorite is the only white one.

Stardew Valley Dating Guide: Shane’s Heart Events

After achieving a certain number of hearts with Sam, special heart events will be triggered that help players connect with him on a more personal level. These events are cutscenes that give you more insight into his life.

First Heart Event

Once two hearts have been reached with Shane, enter Cindersap Forest between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. Shane will share a beer with you while you two sit on the dock by the pond. He starts to describe his depression and warns you against drinking heavily.

Second Heart Event

Once three hearts have been reached with Shane, he will send you a recipe in the mail. He will also become slightly less rude to you during dialogues.

Third Heart Event

Once four hearts have been reached with Shane, enter the ranch at any time. You find Shane passed out in his room surrounded by empty beer cans. Marnie asks you to do something and you take your watering can and pour it on his head. Marnie says all Shane does is mope around and drink. When Marnie asks what Shane has planned for the future, he says he hopes he won’t be around long enough to find out. Jas overhears this and runs away crying as Marnie chases after her.

Fourth Heart Event

Once six hearts have been reached with Shane, enter Cindersap Forest between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. while it is raining. Shane is lying face down at the edge of the cliff surrounded by empty beer bottles. He tells you that he is miserable and asks why he shouldn’t just roll off the cliff. You are given the option to say either “Becasue there’s so much to live for” (to which Shane will say “Maybe for you, but not for me! You’re not going to understand… Just… go away… ugh…), (Jas needs you. You’re like a father to her” (to which Shane will say “… You’re right. Jas… Ugh, God… I’m a horrible, selfish person. Now I feel even worse…”), “It would be a sin” (to which Shane will say “Yoba…? Don’t you know I’m an atheist? Ugh…”), “The decision is your own. Just know that I’m here for you” (to which Shane will say “Thanks… I appreciate that… I really do”).

Neither of these options will have any effect on your friendship level with him. After this interaction, Shane suggests you take him to the hospital. Harvey treats his physical ailments but is more concerned about Shane’s mental health. Harvey tells you he is going to recommend Shane to a counselor in Zuzu City once he wakes up. The next day, Shane will arrive at your farm to tell you he intends to go to counseling. He apologizes for the incident, you are given the option to say either “I’m glad I was there to help” which will earn you 10 friendship points, “You needed a serious wake-up call” which will deduct 10 friendship points, or “I’m just happy you’re still here” which will grant you 10 friendship points.

Fifth Heart Event

After seven hearts have been reached with Shane, enter the ranch sometime when Shane is home. Shane tells Marnie that he’s been feeling happier than usual. Jokingly, she asks if there was a sale on beer. He responds by saying he started to drink sparkling water instead and realized he has people that he can rely on. He walks over to Jas and gives her a present. She opens a pair of expensive shoes and asks how Shane was able to afford it. He says it’s because he cut back on his expensive drinking habit.

If you have two hearts with Emily and Clint, it unlocks a part two to this heart event. Enter the town between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a sunny day. You will find Shane filming a scene with Emily and Clint. He explains that Joja is holding a contest to create an advertisement and the winner gets 10,000g. He invites you to be an extra in the scene and thanks you for helping him. He will also send you another recipe in the mail.

Sixth Heart Event

Once eight hearts have been reached with Shane, enter the ranch when Shane is home. When you enter, Jas guides you through the door in the kitchen that is usually locked. Shane is painting a sign and talking to his favorite white chicken about his ambitions and struggles. When you and Jas enter the room, he talks to you about passing the chicken knowledge to Jas one day. After this event, every time you buy a chicken from Marnie it has a 25% chance of being blue.

Seventh Heart Event

Once ten hearts have been reached with Shane, exit your house before 6:30 a.m. to initiate the event, and then between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. walk to the bus stop. Shane invites you to see the Zuzu City Tunnelers play in their stadium in Zuzu City. Shane thanks you for sticking with him through his struggles with depression and anxiety. He then asks what you think of your first gridball game. You are given the option to say either “Noisy… It makes me appreciate how peaceful it is back home” or “Fun… Pelican Town seems really boring in comparison” Neither of these options will have any effect on your friendship level with him. Suddenly the Tunnelers make a goal, and in a moment of excitement, Shane gives you a kiss. He feels embarrassed and apologizes, but after a moment you reply with a kiss.

When Shane moves into your home he will customize his own room.

Stardew Valley Dating Guide: Marrying Shane

After becoming a couple, the next time is marriage. After marrying any of the characters in the game, they can now gift you presents and help out around the farm.

To become engaged, you must give Shane a Mermaid’s Pendant which can be bought from the Old Mariner. The Old Mariner will be by the tidal pools on the beach and will sell you the pendant for 5,000g. He will not sell you the pendant until your farmhouse has been upgraded at least once. Present the Mermaid’s Pendant to Shane, and you are officially engaged.

The wedding will be held three days later, and your friendship level with Shane can now reach 14 hearts. Be warned, even though you’re married, if you don’t converse with Shane once a day your friendship level will still decrease. Shane will move into your farmhouse and get her own personalized space. He will also help with chores around the house and with your farm.

After reaching 14 hearts with Shane, enter town between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on any day that is not Friday. Marnie, Jas and yourself are outside the saloon and see Shane coming out. He exclaims how he hasn’t had a session like that in a while and Marnie looks worried. She asks you to talk to him the next time he comes to the saloon. After that, enter town at any time the next day. You catch Shane coming out of the saloon and confront him.

Shane gets upset at the suggestion that he’s been drinking and runs home. After that, enter the town at any time the next day. Marnie and you are waiting outside the saloon and Shane walks in. You try to catch him drinking, but instead you find him standing in front of the arcade machine. He explains that playing video games helps with the urge to drink. You are then given the option to say either “I’m sorry, I should’ve believed you” or “I was worried!” Neither of these options will have any effect on your friendship level with him.

Every marriage candidate comes with the same marriage benefits, but every storyline is unique to that character. To learn how to charm Alex, Elliot, Harvey, Sam, or Sebastian, check out the other Stardew Valley dating guides.
