As we head into the last month of Spring there’s a number of new horror movies to be excited about, with this list covering the biggest 5 coming to cinemas and streaming services this May. Dim the lights, shut the curtains, and prepare for scares!

5 Biggest Horror Movies Releasing May 2024

May 2024 kicks off with some of the biggest horror movies coming out to sate fans of terror. Slashers In A Violent Nature and The Strangers: Chapter 1 release, with the latter beginning a new trilogy. There’s also supernatural horror with Tarot and thrillers I Saw The TV Glow and New Life. The Strangers: Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 1 releases on 17th May to Cinemas.

Coming out on the 17th May, The Strangers: Chapter 1 reignites the franchise and starts a new trilogy. Chapters 2 and 3 are intended to be released later in the year. The upcoming Slasher is directed by Renny Harlin, known for his films Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

The film stars Madelaine Petsch (Polaroid, Sightless, About Fate) and Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf, Initiation, Hocus Pocus 2) as couple Maya and Ryan. The pair take a road trip across the US as they prepare to move to the Northwest. When their car breaks down in Oregon they talk shelter in a remote Airbnb. However, in the night the masked strangers arrive to terrorise and murder them. The Strangers franchise has it’s place amongst cult classics, and the new trilogy should be on the radar for horror fans.

Tarot

Tarot releases on 3rd May 2024 to cinemas.

Upcoming supernatural horror Tarot comes to cinemas early May. It’s an adaptation of the horror novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams, who co wrote the movie with directors Spenser Cohen (Extinction, Moonfall) and Anna Halberg (Her directorial debut). The film stars Jacob Batalon (Spiderman: No Way Home, Let It Snow), Harriet Slater (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Pennyworth), Avantika Vandanapu (Mean Girls, Big Girls Don’t Cry) and Larsen Thompson (Pearl, The Midnight Club). The source material was well recieved, and the film has a strong cast. Thus it gains its place amongst the biggest horror movies of May.

When a group of college students have their futures read through Tarot cards, they begin to die off in ways related to their fortunes. With time running out the group of friends must work together to figure out the mystery and save their lives.

I Saw the TV Glow

I Saw the TV Glow releases on 3rd May 2024 to cinemas.

One of the latest films to be released by the acclaimed A24 is horror-thriller I Saw The TV Glow. Writer and director Jane Schoenbrun achieved acclaim, and won the Visionary Filmmaking award at the Montclair film festival, along with numerous award nominations at other festivals, for their film We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. For their latest film, Emma Stone and Dave McCary are producing. Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Theives) and Bridgette Lundy-Paine (Downsizing, Bill & Ted Face the Music) are starring in the movie. Notably Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit also has a role.

I Saw the TV Glow follows a pair of teenagers who connect over their love of a TV Series. However, reality begins to blur when the show is mysteriously cancelled. At the time of writing, the film has an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.6 out of 10. With a great cast, big names attached and high approval rating from critics, it’s certainly a horror to be excited for this month.

New Life

New Life releases on 3rd May 2024 to cinemas.

Director John Rosman’s debut feature film, New Life, is next on our list. The upcoming apocalyptic horror-thriller stars Sonya Walger (Lost, For All Mankind), Hayley Erin (Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, The Young and Restless) and Tony Amendola (The Mask of Zorro, Annabelle). Collider have described the film as ‘Genre-bending’ with the Rosman taking ‘one of the most overused tropes in horror and approaches it from a new angle’.

The film follows two characters; a mysterious woman on the run and the woman assigned to catch her. Their stories interlink and stakes rise to apocalyptic proportions. New Life has done well amongst critics so far, with a 97% approval rating on rotten tomatoes. The consensus being that its a strong debut for Rosman, and an ‘excellently acted brooding horror-thriller.’

In a Violent Nature

In a Violent Nature releases on 31st May 2024 to cinemas.

Last on our list of the biggest horror movies coming out this May is Canadian Slasher In A Violent Nature. The film is written and directed by Chris Nash. The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance film festival and was noted for its atmosphere, use of long takes and no musical score. Furthermore, The film is largely shot from the killers perspective. It’s a solid premise, that should be a hit with horror fans if it’s executed well.

In a Violent Nature’s IMDB page describes it as ‘An ambient horror slasher that methodically depicts the enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead monster in a remote wilderness.’
