Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Recap: Where The Future Becomes One

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the finale of the Xenoblade trilogy, bringing both characters and worlds together. In this recap I go over the story and links to previous entries to give you the ultimate look into the world of Aionios! Preparing you for the upcoming DLC story.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Recap Where The Future Becomes OneNow that the Xenoblade Chronicles main trilogy is over, the series is looking to go forward. Straying away from the first 3 games plots. While the DLC Story for Xenoblade 3 is yet to release, fans have a feeling that this will contain tons of fanservice and references. Due to the main game trying to separate itself as its own identity, despite the premise being tied to both previous games. This DLC will likely contain an epilogue story that tells us more about where the series is going next. In a Ask the Developer Interview Takahashi and the other developers explain that Xenoblade 3 will set up the future of the series, however the ending of the main game does not.

You can experience the entire trilogy on Nintendo Switch right now. Make sure to pick up the Expansion pass for Xenoblade 3 as you won’t want to miss the upcoming additional details that lead us to the bright future the series has. Needing some help in Xenoblade Chronicles 3? The Story of Aionios

The culmination of both games’ stories gave birth to Xenoblade Chronicles 3, released in 2022. After the plots of both entries conclude the two worlds of Xenoblade 1 and 2 begin to be pulled towards each other. The residents of each world are able to contact each other and manage to build an ark called Origin. Each world crafted one-half of Origin and put the souls of their people inside of it, digitizing them for eternity. Origin’s purpose was to recreate the world safely once the worlds had collided as otherwise both worlds would be obliterated.

Unfortunately, the AI inside of Origin reacted to these souls’ fears of uncertainty for the future and from that, a being known as Z was created. Instead of Origin keeping the two worlds intact as intended Z hijacked it to merge both worlds into one to create the land of Aionios. The queen of Keves (the Xenoblade 1 world) Melia gets captured by Z in order for it to keep control of Origin, meanwhile, the queen of Agnus (the Xenoblade 2 world) Nia manages to escape Z’s clutches creating many things to help future heroes save the world from this “Endless Now”.

The Two Queens Putting Their Souls Into Origin

As an unknown amount of time passes Z stages an endless war that involves soldiers taking the lives of others to fill their Flame Clocks and their life. If the Flame Clock runs out, so does their time alive. However, they will just be reborn again in these cradle-like pods, having no memories of their past lives. Each person also has a mark that limits their lives to only lasting 10 Terms (years) and if they reach this 10-year mark then they will have an event called a Homecoming where they will supposedly “return to the queen”. All life assumes that they are born from the queens, the queens however are just fake versions of Melia and Nia staged by Z.

To help in his control of the Endless Now, Z chooses specific people over the course of time and gives those with twisted fates a chance to become a Moebius. Moebius exists to keep the world in check by taking the lives of the soldiers and extending their own lives in turn. The only force that has tried to oppose Moebius has been the people of The City. One of the things Nia left behind were these Ouroboros stones which allow 3 pairs of 2 to fuse to turn into an Ouroboros, a creature of huge power.  On the other side of things, Melia created a powerful sword called the Sword of Origin. It was crafted by 7 Nopon using the metal found in Origin. It is able to cut through even the strongest of materials.

Fate Is Changing

With an unknown number of years passing and thousands of attempts to bring down the Moebius forces. The “Endless Now” seems to be truly endless. That is until fate starts to change. The wielder of the Sword of Origin, Noah, looks to change the way the world works. Noah is an Off-seer, he sends off the spirits and souls of the fallen. So, he has strong feelings towards all the death and loss all around. He even has sympathy for his enemies the Agnian forces.

In a stroke of luck Noah and his friends Eunie and Lanz, happen to meet someone from the City named Guernica. They are not the only ones investigating this as three Agnian troops attack them. Guernica convinces them to stop fighting after all each side is not their “real enemy”.  A Moebius then attacks, and this forces Guernica to use the Ouroboros stone on the group to help them fight back.

The Ouroboros Of Keves

This Ouroboros stone grants each pair of them to Interlink into a powerful form known as a Ouroboros. These forms use power and energy from both Keves and Agnus worlds and combine them to make them whole. The Ouroboros are incredibly strong and are one of the only ways that Moebius can be out powered.

With both Keves and Agnus now hunting them down, Noah and friends’ team up with the Agnians, Mio, Sena, and Taion. Together they all head towards the great sword that pierces the land, Swordmarch. Mio is also an Off-seer however she only has three months left in her life, so they have to travel with urgency. Along the way they meet friend and foe alike and battle many Moebius as they find out the truths of their world and decide their own fate.

The Great Sword

By the time they reach the sword they only have 1 month left. At the sword, they find the City which has been hidden away from Moebius. The party is able to find out how life should work here. The people of the City aren’t tied to this 10-year limit. They even have families with parents and children. A foreign concept for the Keves and Agnus as they are born just to fight. This really inspires the party to keep on pushing to reach their goal. The City has been planning to take down Moebius for generations to no avail. Now with the help of the party, they will attempt it once more. First, they must go to the Agnus castle in order to talk to Ghondor who knows where the Agnian Queen Nia is sleeping.

Once they infiltrate the prison, they are able to get Ghondor out safely however two Moebius await outside it. These Moebius end up being the previous lives of Noah and Mio turned Moebius. These two overpower the party and take them hostage and taking their weapons away. Moebius N decides that they will stay trapped inside the prison long enough to see Mio’s passing. Only after she is gone then on this day shall he kill all of them.

The day arrives and Mio leaves the world. It turns out that Mio did not die but the one who did was the Moebius M. The two traded bodies as M was suffering walking alongside N for so long. N became Moebius after seeing the endless pain and suffering him and Mio have been through time and time again, in each incarnation. This event only strengthens the party as now they have more power over the Moebius than ever before. However N starts to go insane over these events but Noah and Mio together are able to destroy his Blade. They next head for the Cloudkeep where queen Nia is sleeping. Upon reaching it she explains how the world came to be and how they can find and destroy Z.

Z is hidden inside of Origin, so the party must infiltrate it. By upgrading their boat the Boundary into the Bravery using Origin metal they are able to get through the vortex surrounding Origin. Searching around it they find queen Melia and are able to free her after confronting N. Resolving his despair causes him to fuse with Noah. Melia arrives back at her castle and rallies the forces of Keves. Nia rallies the forces of Agnus. Together they both fight to attack Origin. Keves and Agnus united for the same cause!

Meanwhile, the party begin the final fight for the world against Z. Z is able to limit the party and distort the world to his will. However this will not stop the group from freeing the world from his shackles. Even when Z tries to separate them into their world origin groups, the friends they made along the journey come in to help them fight back. After attacking with their huge mech castles Nia and Melia join the party to get the fight the final stretch against Z. Moebius N and M where inside Mio and Noah the entire time! To destroy Z for good they both use their powers to sacrifice themselves.

After Z’s defeat Nia and Melia ask if Noah will become the world’s new Moebius and keep the world in this frozen time state or let the worlds drift apart again until the time comes again that they get pulled together. Noah chooses the path of the future as while the party may never see each other again, they promise that someday they will reunite. Noah and Mio share a final moment together kissing before the worlds start to separate once more.

In the epilogue we see the original Noah as a child hearing Mio’s Off-seeing tune. From this we can infer that someday they will fulfil their promises of meeting each other once more. Perhaps through their communication Nia and Melia where able to find a way to transport the Agnian group to the Keves world…? For now this little detail remains a mystery…

How The Games Are Tied Together

With the premise of the two worlds of Xenoblade 1 and 2 colliding there’s a dimension load of references. Not only do Melia and Nia return, but we can see the “First Ouroboros” statues in the City are very similar to other characters previously seen. The game even hints at Shulk and Tora being the ones who created Origin for their world. Going further with Tora the new DLC hero Ino is a artificial Blade. Someone in Tora’s family is hinted at to be the creator of Ino. This is even more heavily obvious when they play Xenoblade 2‘s “Battle!!” theme.

With the worlds merging a lot of the landmarks in the game are references to places from 1 or 2. For example the great Swordmarch is just the Mechonis sword from Xenoblade 1. At the end of the game we also get to see many things that made fans cry. Melia shows Shulk’s Monado Replica EX and Nia awakens Poppi the first artificial Blade and gives the player a look at this image which shows us how the party of Xenoblade 2 ended up. Rex better count himself lucky having 3 Wives including Nia herself!

The Xenoblade 2 Crew

The Xenoblade 2 Crew

After the story DLC of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the series will be moving away from the routes and entering a new phase. So going forward we may end up seeing stand-alone stories of each of the two worlds. Maybe featuring this new focus on the future. Some immortal characters could return in different ways such as the Aegis. The series could also have a soft reset. I wonder what would happen if the two worlds collided without Origin? Perhaps a Big Bang-like event. But what happens all depends on what this story DLC contains!

What would you like to see from the series going forward? Let us know in the comments down below! Make sure to check out our Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 recaps as well to get the full Xenoblade experience!

Small correction, the Sword of Origin was created by Melia, not Nia.
