The 4 Weirdest Moments from the 2020 Game Awards

This year's Game Awards were filled with some weird and wacky stuff, let's take a moment to list the best ones! From a band debuting to an advertisement that sounded surreal, it just doesn't fail to deliver every year. With all of that being said, let's get on with the favorites.

The 4 Weirdest Moments from the 2020 Game Awards

This year’s Game Awards was something I was looking forward to. It’s home to some of the funniest moments (Remember Josef Fares?) to the most hype game announcements ever to graze the landscape of the video game industry. This year was no different with Sephiroth joining Smash; the people lost their minds. But I’m not here to lay out the amazing stuff. I’m here to lay out some of my favorite weird or funny stuff that happened at the 2020 Game Awards.

For those of you that missed the show, here are a few articles that might interest you!

1. Band Debut

All right, to start things off, here’s a debut of a new virtual band called OFK. Apparently, they’ll be starring in a game that’ll be releasing next year. OFK is a band similar to K/DA and Gorillaz in the sense that they only exist in the virtual world. But who knows? Maybe there’s gonna be a live concert by the people behind the characters. I just found it weird that they masked a game announcement by introducing a band instead.

2. Uhh… Let her in?

COVID-19 has definitely changed the way we handle things. Social distancing, for one, has been one of the things we need to be mindful of whenever we go out. These Naughty Dog devs, Matthew Gallant and Emilia Schantz, took it to the next level. This hilarious frame right here just shows how these two are taking these protocols. Some people speculate that this is a joke to show how close their houses are, while some people say that she’s still outside the window.

3. Last of Us 2 Winning Best Game Direction

The Last Of Us 2 Winning Best Game Direction

Treading the controversial here, I know. The Game Awards is also home to awards, not just announcements and world premiers. Naughty Dog won a lot of major awards this year but not everyone is happy about it. The Last Of Us 2 won best game direction and Kotaku thinks the game doesn’t deserve it, and I share their sentiments. Best Game Direction awards are given to games that have “outstanding creative vision and innovation in game direction and design.” This means that this award rests on the shoulders of those in management. But what if the game is made under crunch? A game made with crunch time means that the management has failed to get things in order, which makes this one a weird one.

4. “I have POWERFUL swimswims.”

Still can’t believe this commercial is actually real. I remember I heard this one audio-only because I was writing and I couldn’t believe my ears when one of the guys said “I have powerful swimswims”. I just laughed my ass off and immediately looked for the source and it delivered. At first, I thought they were serious. The sarcasm under the commercial was difficult to discern when you’ve only heard the audio. Anyway, if you haven’t seen this commercial, then you’re in for a ride.

So, how was it? Do you have some weird or funny stuff from The 2020 Game Awards to share? Write it down in the comments section!
