Alien: Romulus (2024)
Facehuggers have never been scarier
I loved every minute David Jonsson was on screen. He was able to switch between characters seamlessly and it is so fun to watch. Rain is badass, Ripley would be proud.
This is a rare franchise that doesn't have a bad movie. There are several reasons why.
The creature design is too good. Even when you have already seen it, you can't wait to see it again.
The environment is scary as hell. Alot can go wrong in space, and space itself is scary and full of danger. Even when they settle on a planet or a ship, they take over quickly and it becomes their environment.
The stakes are high because death isn't the worse thing that can happen. Getting caught by one of those things is far worse.
Once the action starts its a non stop fight for survival.
Salem's Lot (2024)
They brought back the old-school fun vampire flick.
Mark is a legendary badass, and my new favorite final boy. He is written and portrayed by Jordan Preston Carter to perfection. It is refreshing to see a character in a horror movie, understand the danger they are in and act according without hesitation. None of this attack and drop the weapon by the body stuff we normally see. None of this standing around or cowering in a corner while your buddy gets killed. Every scene he takes action to defend himself and others while showing fearlessness and valor. There was also alot more vampire in this verison, which I appreciate. It's an entertaining Autum watch..
The First Omen (2024)
Reboot not a prequel
It doesn't make sense. It's marketed as a prequel but its a reboot. It fails to tell a convincing origin story. This Catholic horror story does'nt seem familiar with Catholism, Christianity or the book of Revelation. But they are experts in weaponizing demonolgy?
The First Omen spends a great deal of time following a mystery that is not a mystery to the audience. The real mystery is the what, and how of Damien's father, which is not answered in this film. It introduces us to new characters we are told are important to Damien story, but when? Not in any of the original Omen films. It does deliver an eerie setting and graphic body horror.
It (1990)
You can face anything with friends
IT terrified me as a kid and I am not alone. I couldnt go near sinks or drains alone for weeks. Tommy Lee Wallace faced a near impossible challange to make IT the miniseries airing on ABC scary. He really had to get creative to work around the censors restrictions on children in peril, violence, gore, and blood. He had to rely on the actors performances and implied horror. Tim Curry is brillant as Pennywise. His ability to go from cheery and silly to evil in seconds is still frightening. I believe this Pennywise could disarm, seduce and gain access to children. A few minutes alone with Pennywise is all it takes to never be seen again. Our lucky seven have well developed storylines. Each facing their own real life trauma. They dont fall victim easily, which is intregal to their survival.
The original IT is far from perfect. The ending form Pennywise takes on is giant misstep. However Kings source material is difficult to adapt. There is a certain tunnel scene in the book that will never make it onto screen and rightfully so. The heart of the story is there. You feel for these kids and are rooting for their deserved happiness.
They/Them (2022)
Kevin Bacon is the best thing about this film
John Logan and Kevin Bacon back for a horror movie set in a conversion camp. I'm interested. Conversion camps are terrifying and the circumstances surrounding campers attending one is already horrific. I'm expecting some deep psychological terror.
The beginning where the campers are introduced to the camp is the best scene in the film. It quickly goes down hill from there. We never get to know the campers, some of them never even get introduced to us or have dialog. There is a random musical number and two sex scenes that don't support the story. The killer reveal was rushed and disappointing.
Sherlock Holmes Faces Death (1943)
One of Sherlocks best mysteries
There's a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of grad and greed are on their way out. We're being to think of what we "owe" the other fellow, not just what we're compelled to give him. The time is comin Watson, When we shan't be able to fill our bellies in comfort while other folk go hungry, or sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold. And we shan't be able to kneel and thank God for blessing us before our shining altars while men anywhere are kneeling in eitheir physical or spiritual subjection."
This film has a bit of everything, a spooky mansion, eerie legends, family secrets, a deadly game of chess, rituals and classic murder mystery.
House of Frankenstein (1944)
Where is Bela Lugosi
Where is Bela Lugosi and why isn't he in the movie?
House of Frankenstein is a monster mashup that doesn't really work. Why is it called House of Frankenstein? No clue, because none of Frankenstein's decedants are in the film and it's not set in Frankenstein castles. Instead we get a few knockoffs of other iconic characters including Boris Karloff as a random evil doctor. A hunchback named Daniel? Ilonka a gypsy dancer, who is the Esemeralda for our faux Quasimodo. Unlike the absent Igor, Daniel loves the ladies. At least we get Lon Chaney Jr back as the Wolfman. If you watch it as part of the Wolfman franchise its more enjoyable.
