Laurie Metcalf and Eric McCormack have been tapped as guest stars in Season 2 of CBS’ “Elsbeth,” the mystery spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” starring Carrie Preston as the de facto detective Elsbeth Tascioni.

Jill Dillard grew up on television. She appeared on her parents’ reality TV specials and eventual TV shows from the time she was just 13 years old. She left the series in 2017 at the age of 26. While TLC’s audience watched Jill and some of her 18 siblings grow up, get married, and journey out independently, apparently, truly growing independent wasn’t part of the plan behind the scenes. At least, it’s not what Jim Bob Duggar hoped would happen for his kids. In a recent podcast episode, Jill revealed that Jim Bob Duggar exploited an Iblp principle to ensure he still served as an”authority” figure over his children. He considered himself the gatekeeper even as they left home and started their own lives.

It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

Viaplay has found its Inspector Rebus and author Sir Ian Rankin is keeping it in the name.
Outlander star Richard Rankin – no relation to the source material’s scribe – will play the lead in the Nordic streamer’s debut UK original Rebus. He follows in the footsteps of fellow Scottish actors John Hannah and Ken Stott, who led the ITV version 20 years ago.
Viaplay’s reboot, which is planned as a returning series and will soon unveil more cast, follows 40-year-old Inspector John Rebus at a psychological crossroads following an altercation with an infamous Edinburgh gangster. At odds with a job increasingly driven by technocrats, involved in a toxic affair he knows he needs to end, and all but supplanted in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either as a family man or a police officer.

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

Despite this episode’s title, “Trust Me,” trust continues to be sorely tested in the Cpd’s Intelligence Unit. Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) fears the sex trafficker who shot her is still at large because her guilt-stricken colleague Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) hasn’t told her that she killed the bad guy and that their boss, Sgt. Hank Voight, covered it up. Hailey’s fiancé, fellow detective Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), who sussed out the truth, is angry with Hailey and especially Hank for putting her in that vulnerable position. “If you look at [the team] as a family and Voight as the father—the responsible party—his family is unhappy and dangerously out of sync. It doesn’t feel like home anymore,” Beghe says. However, this week, Hank forges an unexpected bond with a new confidential informant, Anna Avalos, while trying to bring down a drug ring and figure...

HBO Europe and Berlin-based Dreamer Joint Venture Filmproduction have boarded “Trust Me,” Joanna Ratajczak’s probing doc feature on a real life couple’s experimentation with an open relationship.
“Trust Me” will be presented at Locarno’s Match Me networking event by Stanislaw Zaborowski, at Warsaw’s Silver Frame, the project’s lead producer. The HBO Europe co-production was put through by Hanka Kastelicová.
Headed by Oliver Stoltz, Dreamer Joint Venture produced Marc Wiese’s 2020 doc feature “We Hold the Line,” about Filipino dictator Rodrigo Duterte’s persecution of journalists, and Markus Imboden’s “On the Edge,” an Arte France-backed relationship drama.
It turns on Alicja and Sebastian, a couple which seems to have it all – a happy relationship, two wonderful children, money, a large number of friends – until Sebastian proposes that they should open up the relationship to other partners.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

I am not always on board with Gary Mendez’s go-with-your-gut thing. And I know violence is never the answer. But oh man, in this week’s A Million Little Things, when Gary says he wants to end the man who violated Sophie? I feel it, too.
The episode centers on the way that Sophie’s guitar teacher, Peter, groomed her, did something disgustingly abhorrent to her and then made her feel like the whole situation was her fault. It’s horrifying.

Zurich-based First Hand Films has snapped up the Norwegian documentary “Trust Me” – about a Justin Bieber concert fraudster. The film is directed by Emil Trier, co-director with his brother Joachim Trier of “The Other Munch,” showcased at New York’s Lincoln Center in 2018.
The pic produced by Thomas Robsahm and Nicolai Moland for Motlys, with co-production partner Zentropa Sweden, is world premiering at the Nordic:dox competition strand of Denmark’s leading documentary festival Cph:dox, running April 21-May 12.
“Trust Me” is a stranger than fiction true story echoing “Catch Me If You Can.” The documentary chronicles the startling rise and fall of young Norwegian entrepreneur of Pakistani descent Waleed Ahmed, currently serving an 11-year prison sentence in the U.S. for international fraud.

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).
While you’re solving the show’s mysteries, we’ve taken the liberty of solving that nagging background question of where you might have seen its cast on screen before…

“The opioid crisis, war, post-traumatic stress. Who among us hasn’t been touched by these things right now? These are things that have touched our families and our personal lives,” explains “Cherry” co-writer Jessica Goldberg about the universal themes explored in “Cherry.” Co-writer Angela Russo-Otstot agrees, noting that the duo focused on the emotional elements of the original story as a way to connect the film’s themes within the overall narrative. “Our compass was really about mining empathy, which is quite universal,” she explains.
